Dear Non-autistics:
If someone you know or love is having a meltdown, please do NOT
Tell us to "stop it"
Touch us without permission
Yell at us or talk over us
Ask for complicated tasks or answers
Leave us alone if it's obvious we're a danger to ourselves or others
Use restraints, either with your own body or with physical restraints
Panic
Shake us or manhandle us. We can hear you, we just can't respond well
Remember, we are not being a problem; we're having a problem!
So, things to do!
Do:
Make sure we're safe
Remove all stimuli including turning off lights if possible, giving stim toys, noise cancelling headphones etc
Remove us from the situation if possible
Talk softly and offer alternative forms of communication if possible
Sit with us if safe to do so
Offer a stuffed animal or comfort item
Set up a meltdown guide with us so everyone is on the same page
Understand we will be unable to do much post-meltdown. Water, snacks and quiet is required.
Reassurance helps. Guilt often sets in post-meltdown.
A period of inactivity (known as a shutdown) often occurs right after a meltdown. We won't respond or look at you, but we can hear you. Please let this happen naturally
Autistics please add on. What does and doesn't help you?

never ever getting over snow immediately recognising the evil queen disguised as a teenage girl through a low quality livestream out of the corner of her eye like not even looking at the screen and mira is like half a kilometre away from the camera doing tricks on a dragon and it takes snow literally one second to identify her because i guess the evil queens flight patterns are ingrained in snow deeply enough that she is able to identify them in mira even weakened by years in mirror prison

I didn't think about this until someone mentioned how cops will target protestors with disabilities by doing things like claiming a cane is a club in disguise or confiscating prescription medications as narcotics even when they're completely labeled with the person's name and doctor, but:
If you go to a protest, you should always go with the assumption that you will be arrested and detained for at least one day. I hadn't thought about this, but I take daily medication. Not for something life-threatening, but for things that seriously affect my quality of living. Every time I've gone to a protest previously, I've left that medication at home with the assumption that I will be able to go home and take it that night. Even with the risk that the cops will take that medication from me, I should be bringing it with me. I should not be assuming I'm going home that night when I go out that morning.
So if you go, go prepared, and if you're not comfortable saying acab, please know that at the very least, no cop is to be trusted. Any one of them may target you for one reason or another and do everything they can to get rid of you and make you miserable in the process, even if you've done nothing wrong. Don't assume you'll go home or have access to everything you need for your health and comfort when you go to a protest.
And if it's too big of a risk to lose your medication or mobility aid or freedom of movement to the cops, it's okay for you to contribute to activism in ways other than putting yourself in direct conflict with police.

"adhd is the easiest disability to have" “sure plenty of people have adhd but most people are faking” “people are abusing the resources that WE need so that’s why i can’t get my adderall!”
there has been an artificial shortage of all adhd medication for the past 4 years in the US. every investigation into this shortage has returned with the unequivocal result that simply nobody thinks we need it enough to solve the problem.
so they point fingers at the “faker” gaming the system to get adderall who “thinks” they have adhd or is “abusing stimulants to get ahead” for a problem that Our system MANUFACTURED.
so we would be at each others throats instead of realizing that our government and big pharma is to blame for all of this. because their First priority is to punish addicts and to punish folks with adhd and to punish anyone who relies on medication. over everything else. even over profit.
