Since I’m getting A LOT of questions related to this subject, I decided to get them all together. I’ve done a similar post before with a bunch of other info if you haven’t read it, check it out. So, from where do you start? There are a few things to decide before finding and contacting an artist. First: what do you want? Have an idea, work it, think about it, if you have the skills, put it on paper, find references. You don’t need to know exactly what you want, but organizing your ideas and knowing how to explain it is a good start. Second: where do you want it? how big do you want it? Find a good location for your tattoo that fits the size you want and respect the amount if details it has. Third: in what style do you want it? (you’ll find a list with a few styles here) This is an important part of the process to choose the right artist for you. Some artists are skilled in just one type of style, so you can’t go to a traditional artist and ask them to tattoo something in neo traditional, for example. Now that you have the basics in mind, it’s time to find an artist. (you’ll find tips on how to find an artist on my faq) Things to look for: In an artist: see if they are the right for what you want, if they do the style you want, look for their portfolio and try to find reviews of them. In a shop: see if it’s a  legalized place, if it has a good reputation and if follows all the sanitation requirements. And how do you go about contacting them? There a few ways to do it. You can call the shop, email them or go directly to the shop. I personally, only book appointments via email, since it’s way easier and faster for me. For any of the options, you need to give them as many details as you can such as: size, location, placing, budget,  all the details about the design and if possible, references. They’ll give you an estimated price, book an appointment and that’s it! If you’re getting a custom design, it’s common for artists to show you/start working on it only when it’s really close to your appointment, so don’t worry if you have booked it months before and haven’t heard from the artist until the last minutes.
Don’t feel bad about emailing/calling the artist if you have doubts, would like to see or change the design. You are not forced to get a tattoo you don’t like. If you don’t like the result of what the artist came up, tell them, ask for changes. Of course it’s not quite a pleasent situation, but that’s why having everything in mind and choosing the right artist is so important. Remember: you are the client, you have the right to have it the way you like and want. A couple of other questions: Do I need to pay to have a consultation with an artist? Usually artists won’t charge you for that, since you’re only going to talk to them. Some artists require a deposit beforehand though (non refundable) just to book you.  Can’t I just walk in at the shop with a picture and ask them to tattoo that exactly? Yeah sure you can do whatever you want. But no reputable artist will tattoo someone else’s tattoo or another tattoo artist’s design without their permission. You can read why here. But I’m an artist/I comissioned someone a custom design, will an artist tattoo that? In that case, you need to check with both artists and see if it’s okay for them, that usually isn’t a problem. If you’re an artist and have a sketch, don’t be afraid of showing it to your artist, it will actually help them.
*Note that these aren’t rules, you can go about it in any way you want. I just thought it would be easier for people that are lost to know from where and how to start (: Pic credit.
