Part II: Script Writing
JADA
(Dumping her bag on the floor)
Did you finish that assignment for class? I’m pretending I know what’s going on, but honestly, it’s a mess.
JORDAN
(Smirking)
What do you think? Honestly, what even is time anymore? The days just blend together.
JADA
(Sighing)
Right? I’m finally getting the hang of this semester, but it’s exhausting. I feel like I'm drowning in work.
(JADA walks to the fridge, opens it, and stares inside.)
JORDAN
I’m gonna grab food. Do you want anything?
JADA
(Pausing, thinking)
Wanna get boba tea after class? I need something sweet to sip on.
(A beat passes as JADA closes the fridge and sits on the edge of the bed.)
JORDAN
Sure.
JADA
You doing anything fun this weekend?
JORDAN
(Looking thoughtful)
Not that I know of. We need to plan something fun for tonight. I just want to relax.
JADA
(Nods)
Let’s watch a movie tonight. Something funny, nothing serious.
(The room is filled with a moment of comfortable silence. JORDAN starts doodling on a notebook.)
JORDAN
You ever just think about how lucky we are to be here?
JADA
(Smiling)
Yeah, but it’s hard to remember that when I have three papers due next week.
(JADA’s phone buzzes, and she checks it quickly.)
JADA
(Smirking)
Speaking of luck, my favorite cereal just got discontinued. Why does everything I love leave me?
JORDAN
(Chuckling)
You and your cereal obsession.
(The mood shifts slightly as JADA recalls something.)
JADA
I saw the most awkward thing at the grocery store earlier. Someone dropped an entire carton of eggs and just… walked away.
JORDAN
(Laughing)
What? That’s hilarious! What did you do?
JADA
I just stared. I mean, who does that?
(JADA leans back, stretching, and takes a deep breath.)
JORDAN
(Smiling)
I’m just going to stay in comfy clothes all day.
(JORDAN suddenly looks serious.)
JORDAN
Hey, can I tell you something? I think I might not pass my chemistry class.
JADA
(Worried)
What? Why didn’t you say anything? You’ve been acting like everything’s fine.
JORDAN
(Defensive)
I didn’t want to burden you.
JADA
(Softening)
You’re not a burden. We’re in this together. Let’s study tonight after the movie.
(JORDAN looks relieved, but still a bit hesitant.)
JORDAN
I appreciate it, but I really don’t want to drag you down.
JADA
(Determined)
You’re not dragging me down. We’re friends, remember? We lift each other up.
(They both share a moment of understanding.)
JORDAN
(Smiling)
Alright, let’s hit the food court first and then bubble tea.
JADA
Perfect.
(They both stand, getting ready to leave.)
JADA
(As they walk toward the door)
Just remember, we’re lucky to have each other in this chaos.
JORDAN
(Grinning)
Yeah, we really are.
(They exit the room, leaving the door slightly behind them.)
End.

For the set design in the final scene, I chose the proscenium stage because it offers a view that emphasizes the isolation and entrapment of Gallimard. I also like that the proscenium stage creates a boundary between the audience and the character, emphasizing his psychological and physical imprisonment. I wanted to create a strong visual contrast between Gallimard’s harsh reality so this is represented by cold stone brick walls —and the fading remnants of his fantasy, which are seen in the red and gold patterns behind the bars. Since it’s a prison cell there are minimal props but I included one chair as I think it reflects the bleakness of his reality. The grey tones create a lifeless atmosphere, while the red and gold details symbolize the cultural fantasy he clung to, now trapped behind bars. The contrast between the dim lighting and the spotlight in the center of the stage helps visually separate his internal world from his external surroundings. Overall, the prison setting is bleak but I wanted to focus on the lingering presence of his fantasy behind bars to suggest that his illusions, though shattered, still haunt him.
