So people talk about how the infamous beef stroganoff clip in Symphogear has even more impact in context by by being a complete tonal whiplash. From utterly serious plot ponderings straight to school home ec musical song.
Thing is, that is an intentional gag by the show. It's exactly what they're going for, as they do it several times over the years, and it's one of Symphogear's many secret sauces.
I picked out two of my favorite demonstrations of that here, bookending S3's stroganoff with a moment from S1 and a moment from S5, to show just how consistent and self-aware the writers and animators are.
In S1, Tsubasa is at peak post-Kanade BROODING and EDGINESS. She makes the decision to be antagonistic towards Hibiki from the get go, treating her like she's a criminal under arrest, and gravely intones that "Smiles have no place where we're going". Immediate smash cut to "Come on, put on a smile!"
In S5, sopping wet poor little meowmeows Noble Red continue to never catch a break from the narrative. Their angst stems from having been experimented on, then ostracized for having those monstrous bodies. Noble Red's primary motivation until now has been to regain human bodies (treating their current forms as just heavily modified, which therefore can be reversed), only for Shem-ha to have casually naturalized their state. As Elsa and Millaarc weep, Vanessa laments, "The terror and loneliness of being apart from mankind will never heal." And then they IMMEDIATELY undercut the tone with that HILARIOUS swiss Arm(y) knife. A+
