i fear that our fruit has started to mold and rot.
the expiration date has passed, but we are both too proud
to admit that the bruised flesh and the furry spores
are no longer to our liking.
maturation brings out the fragrant notes
but when i consume too much,
the swelled bellies of decomposing berries burst, splattering red across my mouth
and making me sick.
sometimes the best way to tell if a fruit has surpassed its prime
is by squeezing it
to see if it gives or stays firm.
