the way sirens starts by framing michaela as a sinister figure manipulating simone into ostensibly worshiping her, but gradually reveals that actually she's just a severely isolated and deeply lonely woman who resorted to hiring an assistant who could essentially be her best friend and yet her husband still finds a way to take that from her and use that against her to rip away what little scraps of independence he's allotted her over the years

it is frustrating to be in a fandom where an interesting and narrratively significant female character seems to be widely popular, only to realize that actually most people are just going "wow cool sword girlboss" and not um. thinking about her point of view or internal life at all

One really important thing about fiction is that "fiction does not need to reflect your platonic ideal of moral living" and "it is valid to criticize a work or collection of fiction for the messages it sends, ideas it perpetuates, and ways it tells stories" exist simultaneously.

i was thinking abt the like. the thing where people will defend not writing female characters bc "well they're so flat and boring bc the creators forgot to give her a personality" and like, yeah, that's definitely a thing that happens. it can be harder to click with a character that has nothing going for her besides what feels like a checklist that usually includes "exists to be love interest". i get that
..but also this keeps coming up in response to fanfic? the thing where you are building off of something? the thing where you are already taking characters and adding extra dimensions to them? the thing where people will grab a random background character with a name on the wiki page and write thousands of words about them?
the world is your oysters. you can literally do whatever. if you feel like she's bland or badly written, you can fix that. it is literally within your power to go "okay, what would she be like if she was written by somebody that cared". bc you could be the person that cared. i'm just saying,

I love Sirens. I love sisters that lived in two different unhappy houses and can never see eye to eye but are still sisters. I love female cult leaders who talk to you in the bathtub and tell you about your self worth while reminding you not to let your identity be consumed by a man. I love men chasing after women they do not understand. I love Milly Alcock and Juliane Moore in fun outfits.

I need Tumblr to get obsessed with Sirens on Netflix. It's a dark comedy with an excellent cast, and it's a fascinating deconstruction of society's portrayal of women as sirens, luring men to their doom with their "feminine wiles."
The three women at the center—Simone, Devon, and Michaela—are ostensibly the titular sirens; at various points, they have men pursuing them and then later blaming them for their mistakes (Ethan with Simone, Ray with Devon, Peter with Michaela). But these are damaged women just trying to survive and cope with intense trauma.
In some ways, Peter, a rich white man, is the true siren, luring women in (Jocelyn then Michaela then Simone), blaming them for his issues (like saying Michaela is to blame for the strained relationship with his kids, but that was all on him), and then getting rid of them the moment he gets bored (literally in the middle of a gala) and replacing them with a younger model.
He has all the power, no matter how laid back and friendly he seems, and he isn't hesitant to use it when it suits him. And, because of his wealth, the society he lives in never pushes back, allowing him to get away with it over and over again.
I could write essays about this show; needless to say, I loved it.

It is absolutely vital in any fandom to have a favourite character who you want to wrap up in a pile of blankets and give sweet treats to and a favourite character you want to beat on the head with hammers.

i feel like nobody has NOTPs anymore. like if you hate a ship now it has to be for some deep moral reason and you have to justify it to everyone what happened to just not liking stuff that isnt inherently bad but just because you personally think it sucks

always utterly fascinating to come across someone who seemingly has read canon but has such a radically different interpretation of the text that you basically can't recognize anything they're talking about
