me when you tell me there’s gonna be media with metatextual references to the process of making art and the entertainer-entertainment-audience relationship at the function:

#just like me#we as a society would be nowhere without weird introspective structurally interrogative creative works#yeah baby i want my panopticon a la mode

i think my headache is my fault i think your headache is your fault you can get what you want but then you won't want it anymore i can get what i want if i want to be ignored if i thought that it would help then i'd try to do the same i would lay it out for you and you'd listen for a change silence doesn't bother me, i will make it through the day silence doesn't bother me, i don't hear it anyway
#demo demo demo demo demo (song lyrics)#good fucking drumline good varied thing good sense of density it contributes

problem number seventy billion with a lack of empathy is that it makes writing harder
#if i can't feel emotional attachment/connection to the characters how do i know if my readers do !!#i can try & be derivative all i like but that's barely anything better than all this groping in the dark#this is why i need fucking input. and/or a paid editor. sigh#also sprach#truly i tell you i only feel something from reading about characters if a. it hits me in the sympathy-compassion#which is a rather singular particular emotion b. it's exactly like something i myself (have) experience(d)#again. specific. c. it's really really really good writing#that one barely happens

i literally don't know what's up with me i can hardly think of a time i've grown an attachment like this before maybe it's the lonesome dog days of summer doing it to me but when i see images of that smiley vaguely paternal showboat television. i feel a way
#it's tenna by the way tenna from deltarune that's who i'm talking about#and like. i don't think i've seen a playthrough of more than the 1st chapter of deltarune. maybe not even the full 1st chapter.#i know everything from osmosis. and yet here i am. head in my hands#also sprach

Floating Coffin by Thee Oh Sees is all texture, all the way down. Compared to their other releases, it's perhaps a little lighter in color. That and the fact that it has Minotaur are what make it stand out to people already familiar with the band. For people not already fans, well, either the noise-drenched punk/garage & psychadelic rock that makes up most of this album will charm them, maybe they'll be drawn in by the odd instrumental-heavy track like No Spell, maybe they'll even be infatuated by the lyrics, after doing whatever it takes to be able to parse them in the first place. Thee Oh Sees can be a bitter pill to swallow for many, and so the latter few options are far less likely, but I'm one of those who is already charmed by their consistent style, to the point where not a lot incentivizes me to discover actual preferences between their albums. For posterity's sake: this one a bit lighter on things like acoustic guitar and keyboard synthesizers, with a slightly more regular mix to the drums across the whole tracklist. The noise never gets too strong/grating, but the hooks are rarely strong enough in turn to get a lot of these songs stuck in my head, and so I return to my initial point: it's ideal for filling up the background of one's life with a precise sonic texture, while offering more variety than a straight hour-long jam session.
#hey. listen. if you like cello-heavy rock listen to minotaur off of this album#watch the music video even! its beautiful british cheapness might make for a fun time#music reviewssic#c u thru the q

part of my issue has got to be that even beyond the aroace-ness i don't think i see the appeal of fanfic as extending as far as a lot of fanfic writers do. is it just because i'm ~especially genre savvy? is it just because a lot of fanfic writers are not great? it's exacerbated by the existence of "x headcanons" or "x imagines" which are often literal bullet point lists of extremely simple ideas presented as digestably as possible for the reader to put exactly as much effort into extrapolating/interpolating The Character into/from as it takes to get a dopamine hit or whatever and squee. i think a lot of proper prose-form fanfiction serves the same purpose because when you go into reading fanfic- especially au or source-material-has-a-loose-relationship-to-canon stuff -you know the characters already and you're familiar with them in a particular tonal context, usually just one. everything that removes the characters from that particular narrative tone, even if it's like adhering strictly to canon otherwise or what have you, is immediately so different from the source material and so ready to re-interpret the characters that suddenly the only reason you have for reading it is faith in the author to be good at writing and do something interesting in the plot. and like, will they? will they, i don't know, kill off major characters in a longfic? that might subtract appeal for the fans of those characters, who can literally always click away if they want. will they explore some thematic or narrative implications that were brushed aside in the source material? that's not necessarily an undertaking that has to happen through fanfic, colored through an author's depiction of the characters' eyes. frankly when that is all an author's doing with a fic i usually want to step away and just have their thoughts explored in more plain text, and then have like, a discussion with them about it, forum-style. what else can an author do that isn't some cut-and-replace doing-the-imagination-work-for-you mix of existing canon and familiar tropes? at this point the conclusion to all my half-baked thoughts forming this post above is "post-canon fics" which- even beyond the fact that they too vary wildly based on authorial skill -how many major properties appropriate to being reinterpreted as fanfic aren't so serialized or sequelized to have the kind of ending suitable to that kind of thing
#i think i could continue this post with more examples of fanfic tropes that i take umbrage with in some way#but i think i'm losing my thesis#never let it be said that i don't think some people are good at prose storytelling & applying that skill to fanworks#also sprach#uh like to reiterate on what i brought up near the start of the post about the importance of the tonal context of source material#recreating something's tone is tricky work especially when you're translating something into the medium of prose#and yet to me it's like the one sure marker of worthwhile taking-itself-seriously fanfic#...based on the fact that my acceptable palette of not-taking-itself-seriously fanfic is extremely narrow comparatively#i.e. no shipping. among other things

y'see i was reading this piece of rpf (my research) (genuinely i want to see the kinds of reactions had in a mostly-rpf slash community towards a piece of long (serial) darkfic that took liberties with its characters) (it's about the culture of it all) and among other dumb liberal changes given to these real people's backstories for the sake of the narrative they put the most christian stuff i can think of in the one jewish guy's childhood (nobody cared) (important material for the formation of my theorems and whatnot re: fanfic (especially rpf) communities and how they re-interpret characters for the sake of specific plots + when that comes into conflict (somehow) with preexisting demographic factors) (something something does an author need to care about the feelings of marginalized readers when they're already writing darkfic with other, unrelated serious heavy topics covered within) (something something how does one even judge the quality of fanfic and slash or adaptational works in general)
ohhh they were being antisemetic
#i think this works to get out my thoughts. may or may not be readable. could be who knows#also sprach#the fic was from... 2010? i'm almost certain it started in 2010 if not earlier#and i'm not sure if it was published anywhere other than livejournal. wattpad maybe?#(that's supposed to read and/or and not ''fanfic; slash; or adaptational works in general'')
