Kin: What’s their role among their relations? Do they consider others family?

We haven’t really been told anything about Lucia’s family save that concerning her sister, Livia, and the idea that they lost their parents prior to the story to war. Very little beyond that has been given so far, but with 5.0 looming on the horizon, perhaps Lucia will step back into the spotlight and we’ll discover more…

As for my part, I imagine that her mother and father were strict guardians and they had certain expectations put on them even as children. Not a home devoid of love and warmth but very particular about how it was displayed; I tend to think that she and Livia would have ended up in the military either way, regardless of the loss of their parents that caused the two of them to be separated from one another. Given Lucia’s name, I imagine they were hoping she might become some bright beacon for Garlemald (and I do intend to finish the naming origin meme that I’ve left to die in my drafts) and treated her accordingly, raising her with certain pressures and paths laid out for her. 

I sometimes wonder if her inclination towards duplicity comes from her and Livia’s childhood, if perhaps she had a separate persona that helped her cope with how their mother and father treated them? Her decision to go into espionage could just have easily been something to throw herself into after their deaths and the loss of her sister to elsewhere in the military, but given that she was a commander for her own unit of spies… that, to me, speaks of a certain talent that may have existed prior to her separation from her family. 

Lucia and Livia appeared to become somewhat estranged from one another by the time she speaks to the Warrior of Light about her sister and her decisions to follow the path she did, but how she talks about Livia isn’t at all without a strange kind of respect. Livia may have been standing on the opposing side of her on the war, in the end, but she also wholeheartedly threw herself behind what she believed in, something she herself can relate to. There’s not an absence of love there, but it’s been clearly tempered by their separation from one another and the impression that while she can understand where her choices came from, she does not necessarily condone them. I like the idea that maybe they had a dynamic not too unlike Gamora and Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy – that perhaps they had an imposed sense of competition built up between them from the outside, and that maybe they were more rivals than they were siblings, much to the detriment of their bond. 

She finds an adopted family in the Temple Knights (or at least, those who remain loyal to Aymeric, though I do like the idea of her having some close friends she must clash with outside of and inside the Vault) and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn – and beyond that? There’s a certain kinship between her and Vidofnir that endures throughout Heavensward, and I like to imagine Lucia visiting her and Hraesvelgr’s brood as often as she can afford. The Warrior of Light is someone she deeply admires and respects and quite obviously cares for, given how she reacts to their departure from Ishgard and how fervently she prays for Halone to watch over them before the final confrontation with Nidhogg.

I tend to think of Lucia as the Mom Friend who often fails spectacularly at lots of things the Mom Friend is traditionally thought to be quite good at – cooking, baking, the sort of soft and gentle pep talks you’d expect to receive from someone like this. She quietly mother hens most people (apart from Aymeric, who we see get routinely scolded by her) and has a good sense for established boundaries; she seldom ever crosses that line into overbearing or overprotective, though she likely has a learned inclination towards it all the same. Those few she still has beside her are those she so greatly cherishes, and she would move both heaven and earth to see them safe and happy.

X-Ray: How’s their health? Any problem areas? Do they take care of themselves?

In general, Lucia is a very healthy young woman. She is very meticulous in taking care of herself but really only because there are others who are depending upon her, and if she is not at her best, she cannot give those who need it her best. Sometimes she might skip meals, but that’s only when time gets away from her as she works or if there’s an emergency she must handle – duty nearly always precedes how she herself feels at any given time. On those occasions she neglects to feed herself she may very well eat her own words, considering she undoubtedly hounds the other Temple Knights about whether or not they’ve had a meal in the past several bells…

Sing: Do they like music? Do they listen often/sing/hum/play songs in their head?

I like to imagine Lucia is someone predisposed towards humming when she’s at home in her modest apartment -- not when she’s lost in her work at the Congregation, but when she’s in the privacy of her own little space. I think of it as carry over from her youth, that perhaps she greatly enjoyed music as a child but had it quickly barred as frivolity by her strict parents. She’s come to rediscover her love of it since coming to Ishgard, and while she’s not at all an excellent singer, she likely indulges herself when the hour is appropriate, providing no one else is around to hear her.

FULL NAME: Lucia goe Junius.

PRONUNICATION: loo-SEE-ə

HER NAME MEANS: Breaking it down into pieces, Lucia is the feminine form of the name Lucius which is, in itself, derived from the Latin lux for “light.” It is sometimes translated as something more delicate-sounding, such as “graceful light.” Goe is the title given to a few professions/ranks in the Garlean Empire, and given that we know Lucia chose to become a spy, it’s most likely that her title refers to “Primus Frumentarius,” a class of senior intelligence officer mentioned briefly as being a commander of local and foreign operatives. Junius can be translated to mean simply the month June, but it’s also derived from the name Juno, the wife of the god Jupiter and goddess of finance as well as the protectress of women and marriage. Juno can also mean simply “youth.”

SHE WAS NAMED BECAUSE: Her parents wished her to have a strong name, one befitting a proud daughter of the Garlean Empire. Considering it has a traditionally masculine counterpart in Lucius, perhaps they anticipated having a son and were instead blessed with Lucia, but given her strong and often unwavering personality, maybe more so it was a blessing for her to be a bright beacon in the lives of those around her... a light to help lead Garlemald into its glorious future.

NICKNAME(S) AND WHY SHE HAS THEM: She hasn’t any that she knows of, and Halone help you if she ever finds one out.

BIRTH DATE AND STAR SIGN: 1549 in the Sixth Astral Era, the seventh sun of the third astral moon, or May 7th. Her FFXIV patron deity is Llymlaen, and her real world astrological sign is Taurus.

Deep green eyes, keen in the sharpness of their gaze, search Estinien’s features for any hint of a lie. Far be it from Lucia’s intent to lecture the Azure Dragoon on the dangers of his duties, but the desire to see him safely returned to Ishgard keeps her from swallowing her words of concern. They are both soldiers fighting to guard the Holy See in their own ways, hers from within the city and his from without, and though their manners and methods may differ, she thinks him a kindred spirit of sorts. More than wishing him well because he is important to Aymeric, Lucia considers him one of the few she would call a friend.

“ Be that as it may, �� she counters with a softness tempering the sometimes unreadable expression she seems fond of wearing, “ please be mindful of your surroundings... and be careful. We should like to see you come home to us safely. ”

Perhaps nothing he need hear in the first place, but Lucia feels far better having said it. Too many knights take to the field and never return, and she would rather be thrice damned to whatever hell may await a such a disingenuous woman that refrains from wishing a friend well than keep her silence hoping he already knows her heart.
