I love that Transformers and Warhammer40K have opposite philosophies when it comes to the survivability of named characters.

In 40K, if you are named, you are very unlikely to die. Unless you give your name last minute right before you die, or you are in the middle of the Horus heresy, you're gonna survive. The more well known you are, the more chances you have to make it out. Hell, Ciaphas Cain is forever marked "on duty" just in case he crawls out of his coffin. If you are not named, you don't matter, so you're cannon fodder.

Transformers ? Ever since the 86's movie, the more named you are, the more you are sure to die. Oh, there is unnamed casualties, mostly Vehicons, but you have more chances to be rescued (or knocked out if you're one of those vehicons) by an heroic Optimus Prime more than anything. If you are named, stay the most forgettable joe-schmo possible. You start developing a sweet relation with a few bots, and you're gonna die horribly like Quark, who's only crime was to be loved by Brainstorm and becoming friends with Skids. Hell poor Cliffjumper became known as "the one who dies at the beginning" with how much he did that very thing.

The worst cases ? Optimus Prime and Megatron, or anybody that claims to be their successors. Prime dies at least once per continuity (he even managed to die in BEAST WARS. He wasn't even a character in it!), and Primal died in the end of the first season of beast wars, and it took seven months IRL for him to come back. Megatron is worse, he sometimes dies TWICE per continuity.

Sole exception is Starscream. Because Starscream is a highly competent cockroach that only Megatron can manage to dispose off, and even then nobody can kill his ghost.

In transformers, if you're not named, you're not part of the story you're left alone. If you are named, you matter, and because you matter you're gonna get your spark tragically ripped out to get the readers to tear up.
