Changed for Good | One Shot

In which Tad's bags are packed and he begins his own excellent adventure...

The day was finally here. His bags were packed, Frodo was in his crate, and the taxi was on its way to the campus. Tad didn’t rush. He’d never been the type to run off anywhere. He had always taken everything one day at a time at his own pace. Life had never matched his pace and he had always been fine with that. But now, Tad was ready to catch up. He picked up his bags and gave Phineas a quick hug before he made his way out. 

He stepped out of the dorms and paused as he took in the campus that had become his home for the last few months. The trees around the campus were lush and green and the place was giving the most inviting vibes. For a minute he thought about hanging out a little longer, looking for the spots that he had liked the most. He could find that corner where he and some of his stoner buddies got high. He could also go to that one spot on campus where he liked to stretch out and do yoga outdoors when it got warmer. Or he might even be able to stop in for one of his favorite snacks as a last little treat for himself.

But for once, Tad was in an actual time crunch. He turned away from the main part of the campus and toward the street where his taxi was already waiting. The driver helped him put his stuff in the trunk while Tad set Frodo in his carrier in the backseat. He snapped a picture of himself leaving campus. He then got in the car and snapped another one for this new adventure start. 

The taxi pulled away from campus and headed down main street. Tad peered at the different shops and places he had grown so familiar with. He waved at Hatter’s when they passed it, and debated on texting Pip another goodbye. But he soon changed his mind, figured their conversation in person was the best kind of goodbye anyway. He didn't need to mess with the good vibes of it.

The taxi finally left the boundary of Swynlake and down the road to the Next Town Over. It didn’t take long before he was completely away from the familiar places around Swynlake and on the motorway to London. Once they got on the motorway, Tad pulled his face away from where it had practically been plastered to the window to take in everything he knew for one last time. 

Tad turned to his headphones and jammed to some songs and dozed for a chunk of the drive before he got to the London airport. The process of it all wasn’t too complicated, and before he knew it he was chilling at the gate. This was it. Once he left London he wouldn’t be coming back for a long time. He pulled out his phone and sent one more quick tweet to the people he cared about. And then he finally boarded the plane for Australia, ready to see what it was like to make a dream become reality.

"Thanks bro. I'm really gonna miss you too," Tad replied with a cheerful grin. But he was ready for the next chapter. And now that he'd gotten over the hurdle of telling people he could focus on that. In the next few hours he would focus on the apartment hunt and how Frodo was tagging along and all the details...but for now he would let himself vibe with his good buddy for the last time for a while.

"Oh dude, you know what? The apartment thing would be dope. I think my sponsors gave me like a few options man, but like... yeah. Yeah that'd be awesome my dude." Tad wasn't really one who thought too much about the details. As long as there was a roof over his head and he could eat and stuff he was pretty okay.

Tad smiled at his roomie and friend. He really was gonna miss Phineas. The guy was one of the coolest people he knew. "But yeah. I've gotta go tell the school and stuff about what's going down and then pack and yeah. It's gonna be lit man."

A picture!

That was a genius idea. Tad hadn't thought of it, but it would be great to have a good keepsake of this moment. Pip was such an important person to him. And if they didn't see each other for a long while, they'd have that.

Tad nodded quickly, a smile lighting up his face as he leaned toward Pip so they could capture a great picture of the two of them. "You're always thinking of the best ideas Pip. Thanks man. I don't usually decorate stuff much my dude, but if you send it to me I'll probably put it in a frame and stuff in Australia. Cause like... I don't know man. You're one of my favorite people."

And Tad would really miss him more than anyone else in town. "Thanks for doing this with me my dude. And for like... everything."

Tad beamed and squeezed Pip's hand back softly. He knew that Pip would understand. Pip had a way of getting him when some other people never bothered. It was something that he'd always loved about Pip. He just understood him.

It felt good in that moment to tell Pip about his future. About this awesome adventure he was about to go on. Just like Pip would go on one of his own soon.

"I'm gonna miss you too my dude. A whole lot. I'll definitely send it to you. Make sure to get me like front row tickets when you do man. I wanna be right there to see your moment too." Tad could picture it and the thought was really cool. He'd probably get flowers or whatever it was people did for broadway premieres. He was excited for that future for Pip too.

"And you know... I'll hit you up with details on my first pro competition when it happens. I feel like... it'd be cool if you could see me go pro. If you end up having the time."

Tad knew it was kind of crazy. And it was super fast. But it was the dream. He wasn't really fussed about the details. The important part was getting to Australia. From there he would figure out everything he needed to figure out.

One day at a time. That was the key. And since he didn't really have to bother himself with where his parents were or whatever it was all chill. As soon as he figured out what to do with Frodo, he would be all set.

"Scared?" Tad tilted his head as he considered that for a moment. "Nah, I don't think so my dude. I've already faced like super scary stuff." Rehab had been scary. Some of the Swynlake chaos? Also scary. But leaving to follow his dream and go pro? No that part was just exciting. "It's like... I mean I didn't even realize how much I always wanted to do this but man... when I was surfing in San Sebastian right? I felt like... dude I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be, you know?"

He had never felt so sure of himself and so right and so happy than he did in the ocean. Nothing felt quite as good. No high could ever beat that feeling. "I don't know much about Australia, but I know there's a lot of chances to compete and to surf and like... that's everything. I want to feel like I felt on Spring Break man." He shrugged his shoulders. "I figure it's kinda like how you feel on a stage my dude. Don't you feel like it's your place man?"

"Thanks my dude. You're the best. For real man." Tad was glad that he got to be friends with Phineas. The guy really was one of the best people in town. They'd always vibed, and he was sure if they met again at some point in the future they'd keep on vibing the same way.

"I don't know if there'll be enough time for a going away party bro. Think anyone'd show if it was last minute?" Granted, college people were pretty good about parties. But Tad didn't need a lot of fuss for himself. He was good with talking to the few people he cared about. "I'm just glad I could tell you and the people that I vibed with here."

It really was the chance of a lifetime. Tad still could hardly believe it. But he was so grateful! And he was going to prove that he deserved that shot. It was the first time he really felt like he wanted to prove himself somewhere too. He felt more motivated now than he had been in a long time.

He knew he was going to do something awesome in Australia. The one bummer was that he couldn't have all of his cool friends around when he did it. And he was going to miss Pip especially. Even though their relationship side of things hadn't gone well, Tad considered Pip one of his favorite people. He really was going to miss him the most.

"In a few days. Like early April so I can get there and practice and stuff. I'm basically leaving as soon as I've dropped my classes and stuff," Tad admitted softly. "Which uh... it does mean I'll miss your birthday my dude which I'm really sorry man... but on the bright side... I can send you something super sweet from Australia. Anything you want."

Tad felt pretty good about his decision. He felt like he was really going for something amazing. He'd always dreamed of this sort of thing, but it was far away, something that seemed unlikely but a cool vibe if he could.

But now here he was with a sponsorship at his feet and the funds to bring himself to Australia. He was going to miss all of his friends, but he knew this was the moment. He had to take this chance. "I'm gonna miss you like crazy too bro. But hey, when I'm doing more pro stuff on the regular you'll have to come check it out. Maybe when I go stateside again or something."

He shrugged his shoulders. He was sure to keep in touch with Phineas and with Pip and stuff. The people he met here were pretty sweet. "Thanks for being the coolest dude to vibe with in this place."

"Yeah man," Tad agreed. It was insane. He was going to move to Australia. And he was going to move really soon. He thought originally he might finish out the school year. But then... but then there were some serious competitions he could go for in April and May. Stuff that would mean he'd have to leave town sooner.

It was like...sad but happy at the same time. Sappy? No that didn't sound right. Well, whatever the word was, Tad was still feeling weird in a good and sad way. The vibes were wonky. But he supposed that was what would happen when he was preparing to leave a place he really loved a lot. And some great people.

"Uhh...no. Like uh...April my dude," Tad admitted with a sheepish smile. "Sorry man. Like... they want to try to get me training as soon as possible, and there are competitions later in April or in May they want me to try to get in on so like...yeah," he trailed off, looking rather mystified. "I'm uh... I'm gonna drop out here and go like...live the dream man."
