My introduction to then Illinois State Senator Barack Obama and the first conversation I had with him revolved around the environment. I forgot the specific question I asked him, but it became clear after about 15 seconds of his pacing and stammering that he was not conversant regarding the environment. Regardless, I was one of the first to jump on his bandwagon, for numerous other reasons. But I was frustrated during his first term because he clearly was ignoring the environment and climate change or he was shoving those issues to the back of the room in favor of his pet projects (such as the Affordable Care Act), or a combination of the two. He made up for that deficiency big time during his second term.

So to me it’s ironic that President Obama is being frustrated in his efforts to build his Presidential Library and the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park, on the South Side of Chicago, by a group of mostly older environmentalists who formed a group called Protect Our Parks. This group and others like them who are members of the Friends of the Parks have been pains the ass to Chicago politicians for years.

When Charlotte Adelman was a student at the University of Chicago, the nearby parks became a refuge for her, a sprawling expanse of green where she could escape the concrete urban landscape.

It was then, many decades ago, that Adelman began her journey to becoming a fighter for environmental justice. Along the way, she has fought to preserve open spaces, ban pesticides in Wilmette and co-authored a book, “Prairie Directory of North America.”

Now, Adelman, 81, has set her sights on her biggest target yet — to block the Obama Presidential Center from being built in Jackson Park.

Adelman, along with her fellow advocates Maria Valencia, Jeremiah Jurevis and the advocacy group Protect Our Parks, have filed suit against the presidential center. They contend that the city and Park District do not have the authority to make public parkland available for the project. Jackson Park, they say, must remain untouched.

“I've devoted years of my life to the environment. It's very important to me, it's not just an interest, but the motivation of my life,” she said. “Chicago, when it was established, had so much open prairie land. Much of that is gone. Our founders … they carved out space. I assume they thought there would be buildings, but I doubt they ever thought the city of Chicago would cover everything with buildings for miles.“Our parks are the last remnants of open space.”

The year that just passed was wack as hell for numerous reasons, but there were also some nuggets of gold that stood out like corn kernels in the giant turd that was 2016. Here is a list of art I encountered for the first time and enjoyed last year. Most of it didn’t actually come out in 2016, but who cares.

COMICS!

Sir Alfred #3, by Tim Hensley. Best comic of the year. So funny, well drawn, and balanced right on the precipice between touching and farcical while moving with an incredible momentum. Also a fitting end to the tragically departed Alvin Buenaventura’s magnificent publishing career.

Providence #7-11, but especially 11, by Alan Moore and Jacen Burrows. Alan Moore at his best is better than all the other comics; this is Alan Moore at his best. Burrows is as good as anyone Moore’s ever collaborated with, which is to say a league of comics legends. Providence 11 goes past being just a really good scary comic into feeling like the object itself is actually evil, actually the carrier of something malign. Brilliant. 

Peplum, by Blutch. The best comic in the best genre (ancient Rome). Makes the ancient world seem as wild and strange as it would probably seem if you could actually visit it. The drawings in here are what Will Eisner wanted to be but lacked the skill to achieve. Holy shit is this an amazing book.

Epoxy Cartoon Magazine, by John Pham. Not a comic per se but a “design container” by the dude in comics best equipped to make one of those.

MOVIES!

The Witch, The Neon Demon, Don’t Breathe, The Handmaiden, The Love Witch, and Elle were all movies of more or less excellent quality that utilized different horror movie tropes (lost in da woods, Dario Argento type shit, final girl, period horror, sexploitation a la Jean Rollin, and rape revenge) to make feminist statements, or statements about feminism, that felt worthwhile and cogent. And even if they didn’t, they were all kickass movies that kicked ass. The best movie of the year, however, was Johnny Ma’s Old Stone, a first movie by a director completely at home stepping into the shoes of Taxi Driver and walking a totally different direction from that movie in them to produce something of equal lurching grace and black profundity. See it!
