Hwei has found himself on a caravan in the middle of the shuriman dessert. Holding his brush to his chest his eyes locked with the mana cross from him, who was rambling about.. gods.. of some sort. It didn't cross Hweis mind perhaps he had gotten on at the wrong stop, only when they were moving and approaching closer to Nerimazeth did he realize his error. Fingers tightened around the wodden handle of his tool as his head turned to view the scene. unfolding before them was a city. Perhaps it could have seen better days, Hwei could feel the magic swell from the loose sandstone. Cracking under the weight of the caravan, causing a moment of unease in his stomach as he though that perhaps the earth was going to break out from under them like ice.  The caravan came to a halt suddenly, causing Hwei to glance around in confusion, only to follow the others as they stepped one by one off their transport. His feet hitting the ground gently as he listens to the others babbles grow with excitment. He's unsure what they're talking about, mixed sentences that gave some minor information. They were in a place called Nerimazeth, apparently it held great inportance to a god of sorts. They then spoke of an ascension, escaping their mortal coil to be one with the mighty god they called the magus. Hwei was unsure what to make of any of it, although his thoughts were interupted by the towering figure of a being. Blinding to stare at, created of pure energy that guided them from where they had arrived. The magic crackling from their body and whereever their garnments were not covering their 'skin' or what Hwei assumed was skin, or what was left of skin. 

As they made their way through the broken cobbled streets Hweis vision struggled to keep him focused at the situation at hand. The swelling magic interfered with his eyes, causing them to swirl violently in color as he struggled to keep up with the others. This place was nothing like Ionia, it was much more intense when it came to the magical flow. It made him feel nauseous, as if he were riding the violent waves as the magic fluctuated around them from the various beings. 

~ It was when he was brought forward to a taller entity did he stand there, feeling incredibly small. His eyes glancing upwards through his lashes at what he had gathered to be he so called god that the others were speaking of. He obviously stood out from the rest, missing the robes that the other travelers wore along with their facial covers. They arrived to this area so fast, did his visions take over his mind for that long? He grips the handle of his brush tightly as he peers up at the crackling energy. Daring not to speak as it loomed over him.

And many happy returns to you and yours.  This year has GOT to get better, at least that’s the direction I’ll be praying/fishing towards for sure.  So many folks around the New Year make resolutions they’ll never keep.  What are yours?  I would encourage you to make them doable/reasonable goals so your success is more achievable and you don't set yourself up for disappointment.  Like I plan on starting that new diet/exercise routine and getting in better shape. Sometimes saying, "I am going to lose 50 pounds by February 1st" can be daunting/unrealistic and just drop us into despair.  Instead create softer goals like, "I am going to get back into a work out routine."  "I plan on making every effort to eat cleaner, be nicer to others and allow more good fortune to find me!"  You get the idea.  Here’s to a better year of making best efforts to move every aspect of your life forward with grace and ease and we’ll be here to help/contribute to you and yours in every way that we can.

And many happy returns to you and yours.  This year has GOT to get better, at least that’s the direction I’ll be praying/fishing towards for sure.  So many folks around the New Year make resolutions they’ll never keep.  What are yours?  I would encourage you to make them doable/reasonable goals so your success is more achievable and you don't set yourself up for disappointment.  Like I plan on starting that new diet/exercise routine and getting in better shape. Sometimes saying, "I am going to lose 50 pounds by February 1st" can be daunting/unrealistic and just drop us into despair.  Instead create softer goals like, "I am going to get back into a work out routine."  "I plan on making every effort to eat cleaner, be nicer to others and allow more good fortune to find me!"  You get the idea.  Here’s to a better year of making best efforts to move every aspect of your life forward with grace and ease and we’ll be here to help/contribute to you and yours in every way that we can.

John Boehner wants to you smoke dope.  Think about that.  This is a man who was a very conservative republican, and not just any republican. He was speaker of the house.  Not 30 years ago but less than 5.  The same guy who was “unalterably opposed” to marijuana legalization in 2015 wants you to be able to buy your weed with the same ease and legality as a six pack of beer.  Oh, and he’ll take your money while you are at it as a board member of Acreage Holdings, a company that cultivates, processes and dispenses cannabis in 11 states.  I mean, why give that money to the kid at the used record store when there are so many out-of-work former speakers of the house out on the market (don’t worry, Paul Ryan, there is plenty wacky tabacky for you to go out and sell too).  

Now, this may sound like I’m picking on old John, but I’m not.  There are way better things to pick on him about and besides, isn’t it a bit quaint to pick on a guy like that compared to what we have now?  In any event, I’m just using him as an example of how the tide of bong water has turned on this subject.  More and more folks realize that maybe there is a problem with criminalizing a relatively safe substance (compared to other drugs including alcohol) that may have some medicinal benefits.  Maybe things could be a bit better for someone with chronic pain, glaucoma, or just had a bad day if the stuff could be easily and safely purchased.   In very simple terms, it makes a lot of sense, but like everything, it is way more complicated than that.

The first problem is that marijuana is listed as a schedule I drug by the federal government.  Without getting too technical, that means it has no medicinal value and is not acceptable to be possessed for recreational use under any circumstances.  Drugs like heroin and cocaine are on this list along with many others (if you need a real education on this just watch a Cheech and Chong marathon).  The problem is that many drugs that have questionable value or are far more abused are not on the list.  As a matter of fact, your doctors, insurance companies, and anyone who is trying to make a buck off the drug wants you to have these in quite large quantities at very affordable prices.  The drug that first comes to mind for me is Ativan.  Ativan is a drug commonly prescribed for anxiety, sleep, and basically to calm you down.  It’s Valium for the millennial age.  It works like a charm but is quickly habit forming.  It is also incredibly dangerous when mixed with alcohol.  If you want to party like a rock star (and maybe die like one) wash your Ativan down with some bourbon and let the fun begin (none of which you’ll remember, trust me).

I know all of this because I’ve had my share of substances.  Please do not take this next paragraph as any sort of bragging.  For starters, I know people who have done WAY more than me.  Anyone who knows me knows that and that I always managed to stay off the edge when it came to too much (very subjective there, but let’s go with it).  Also, it really is nothing to brag about. Certainly not when the use turns into abuse and your jobs, health and relationships are at risk.  That being said, I don’t see anything wrong with sharing the experiences of using drugs and I think that puts my eventual conclusion to this post in context.  So, my story in a few sentences is that I drank for about 30 years, smoked pot for about half that time, and supplemented with a host of prescription medications throughout.  Some were relatively harmless like the range of antidepressants I have been on (though one I took in the 90’s turned out to possibly cause a fatal liver problem, but hey what the hell we all make mistakes!).  Others, like Ativan were addictive and more problematic when combined with other drugs. By the time I got sober, I had mostly phased out pot, but was hitting alcohol and prescription drugs pretty hard.  I haven’t had anything stronger than a cup of coffee or non-alcholoic beer in just over six months.

With that background, my position on the legalization of marijuana is surprising.  I’ll start with the statement that legal or not, everyone should get high at least once in their lives.  When done right, and in the proper setting, it puts you into a state of mind that is truly liberating.  It is no accident that so many creative endeavors have been fueled by the stuff. I also see how it could benefit in a number of ways as a medicinal agent.  But, just because pot may be a great experience and possibly even helpful, should it be legal?  Should it be available next to the Jack Daniels and the pharmacy where they are dishing out the Ativan?  My question to John Boehner and anyone else who has pivoted to supporting legalization is why now?  What has changed that makes it the right time?  Why marijuana and not cocaine?  Why not go the other way and explore prohibition of alcohol again?  

My point is that whether it is legal or not, it doesn’t fundamentally change the morality of doing drugs.  I have never understood why one drug is fine (we can drink wine at church!) and others are explicitly immoral (satan wants you to smoke dope!)  I find nothing immoral about using any drug any more than I would find it immoral to sit and eat a pound of bacon (done it – separate post). It may not be a good decision, especially when done in a way that harms yourself and others, but we make lots of bad choices that aren’t regulated and I don’t see why marijuana is singled out along with a few other drugs.  So, if there is nothing “wrong” with smoking pot, why not make it legal?  Heck, why not make everything legal?  A true libertarian (which I am not) would say hell yes it should all be legal.  Someone with an open mind, but with a logical fear that wide open may be too much, may say how about we think about it a little more.  I am in that camp.  I just don’t get the rush to legalize at this point.  If you want to smoke dope, you can do it just about anywhere.  It’s already been decriminalized or outright legalized in terms of small recreational use in many parts of the country.  Go to one of those places, find a dealer (or get yourself a medical card), and have a blast.  Who gives a shit if the federal government cares or not.  They certainly are looking the other way when you accumulate your 72 assault rifles and stash of 10,000 rounds of ammunition (is that a lot? I have a no idea but I wanted to sound very dramatic so I hope it is). I really don’t think it matters if you smoke a joint around the campfire this summer.

I guess the bottom line for me is that we have bigger fish to fry and I am pretty indifferent at this point if it is ever legal or not.  Right now, I am not interested in the stuff at all, but that may change as I explore my mental and physical health in this state I’m in of abstinence. If and when that happens, I’ll have my next dance with Mary Jane with or without Uncle Sam on my side.  If he’s with me though, I certainly will pass the joint along.  The poor boy sure seems like he needs it after the year we’ve had.  And if any of you are around, you can join us.  Even if it’s your first time, you are welcome. A former TV comedy writer learned three ways to succeed at impossible tasks when he taught an IBM computer how to argue

Dr. Noam Slonim is the computer scientist who conceived of and helped build "Project Debater," an IBM computer that not only debates humans, it sometimes beats them.

The effort to build Debater took six years and was fraught with doubt and discouragement for him and his team

In a exclusive interview with Business Insider, Slonim says that his period writing for TV comedy shows helped prepare him for creating Debater.

  A unique, Man vs. Machine battle of wits occurred last month, and Dr. Noam Slonim was the brains behind the winning machine.

Slonim is a former comedy writer turned full-time computer scientist. He conceived of and oversaw the development of "Project Debater," the latest IBM supercomputer capable of understanding and speaking in natural language well enough to not only debate humans, but sometimes defeat them.

Last month, Debater engaged in two debates against humans, prevailing in one of them as judged by the audience, made up largely of San Francisco's tech press. The following day, the computer's rhetorical skills received mostly glowing reviews from the same reporters.

Some of the best minds at some of the biggest tech companies are trying to teach computers to converse with humans-— the stuff of science-fiction. The bet is that sometime soon, people will truly be able to control their PCs and gadgets through conversation.

But creating that kind of sophisticated artificial intelligence isn't easy.

IBM's Debater team toiled for six years before Debater's impressive showing last month, a project that was at times full of disappointment and doubt, Slonim recalled during an exclusive interview with Business Insider. He acknowledged the system, which occasionally drifted off topic or repeated itself during the debates, still has a long way to go.   

Slonim’s own path to success in computer science was also a circuitous one.

He almost ended up in the entertainment industry. Two decades ago, he was one of the writers for The Cameri Quintet, Israel’s equivalent of Saturday Night Live. Later, he helped develop a Seinfeld-esque sitcom. The show didn't stay on the air long and he eventually went back to pursuing his PhD full time.

That shift from comedy to computers turned out to be good for him.

He says that three communication skills, instrumental in both pursuits, can help anyone be more confident when working on what seems like an impossible mission:  1) connecting with people on an emotional level, 2) offering criticism without being cruel 3) learning how to deal with doubt.

A writer's mind

"I found myself in an interesting position," said Slonim, the IBM Research’s principal investigator on Project Debater. "I love machine learning and natural language processing but I also love to write, to be creative in writing. This project allows me to combine these skills."

The whole idea behind Debater was to train the machine to gather ideas, analyze and boil them down and then write arguments based on the information -- much the same way human beings do.

Debater sifts through huge quantities of text to gather information that supports whatever argument the system intends to make. Debater doesn’t just regurgitate other people’s ideas, Slonim said. The computer might pull entire paragraphs, but more typically Debater pulls out single sentences or even clauses from any single text.

Making a convincing argument, however, requires more than just rounding up raw data, according to Slonim.

Slonim and IBM wanted to equip Debater with the ability to connect with an audience on an emotional level. For starters, Debater is trained to recognize human controversy and moral principles. They want the machine to be able to create metaphors and analogies. The system has even been equipped with a digital sense of humor, according to Slonim.

“(Humans) need to look at texts and understand how to build an argument,” Slonim said. “You have to inject humor once in a while.”

Slonim said that having a background in writing was necessary to instill these things into a computer system. He believed that so much that he added a published book author to the Debater team.

Idea exchange

In addition to knowing how to write, it’s a good idea to be a skilled debater oneself before attempting to teach a computer how to do it.

Slonim said that an environment must be created so that colleagues can share ideas and then be enabled to debate those ideas. This is a big part of any collaborative endeavor, be it writing TV shows or building supercomputers.

He said the Debater team often hashes out ideas during jogs in the park, using the time to challenge and defend ideas in a constructive manner.

He added that offering criticism without being cruel is a valuable skill.

Dealing with doubt

Finally, sharing doubts in an open and supportive way can be helpful when setbacks occur.

During Debater’s development, the team experienced some very deep valleys. Doubts that the team could create a debating computer system began to set in. Even Slonim began to question the team’s goals.

Slonim said the problem at times seemed too complex.

"It’s a large team of talented people," Slonim said, "and it took us four years to get Debater to the point to debate in even a (rudimentary) manner. But the hardest part for me was not a technical thing. The hardest part was to believe that this was doable."

He added, "Especially in the beginning, in the first few years people felt it would be hard to make progress and [if] we’re going in the wrong direction and naturally they raised that with me. My wife is a psychologist and she said the most important thing is not to dismiss the doubts but rather share them with the team."

By sharing like that, the team helped buoy each other during the days when nothing seemed to go well, Slonim said.

And the team may yet face more dark days.

Debater is still a work in progress. In addition, artificial intelligence is receiving a lot of scrutiny from those fearful that AI could prove to be a threat to humanity.

"My understanding is that the potential of this technology is huge," said Slonim, who argues Debater might one day become a teaching tool for children.

"We want youngsters to better articulate their arguments, to make more rational decisions, to participate in discussions with peers in a valuable and civilized manner," he said. "We want them to use critical writing and thinking. I truly believe this is going to bring a lot of good to our society."

It was when the wave of aura had hit him, an overpowering, looming hatred that wasn’t physically present in the man. Rather, emanating around him. He could feel the pain, the hatred, the writhing hunger that clawed at the edges of the man's silhouette. It shrieked, it snarled, like an animal on a leash as it became aware of Hweis's presence. He could feel it was ancient, it hated everything, it reached for every living thing and wished to consume it. The mans aura was quite different.. even though this ancient being wished to feed and gnawed at the edges, he stood rather strong. Unmoved by its jeering and clawing, even as his arm and part of his eye was consumed. The other remained strong, as if trying it’s best to remain steady against the beast. That or he was barely bothered by it’s presence.

Hweis head tilted, the shifting colors of his eyes steadying as he calmed his visions. Were he not careful perhaps they’d manifest for all to see. “You don’t have to remain so far.” he says rather calmly, ignoring the onslaught of terror that waited for him in the veil of shadows that hung heavily over the stranger. Returning back to working on his piece, his eyes glanced to the side once and a while to see if the other moved from his spot. “Unless you wish for me to paint you also,” he adds. “But I recommend not standing, it’s a rather tough pose to hold for hours..”

Hwei seemed, rather uninterested. Or for better words, he was rather uninspired by the work in which his masters had asked of him. Their requests were rather unsavory, to keep himself under control. That his emotions were unstable with his work, but after days of what seemed to be monotony, Hwei was rather bored of it all. That was until the introduction of a new master, perhaps one that would understand him. He was a traveling artists of sorts, welcomed by the school in a celebratory manner. Hwei couldn’t have been bothered by such things. But he was more focused on the new arrival than parties and the fancy tours which they forced the man to partake. Stroking their egos in his eyes to squeeze some sort of praise from his lips. His hand quivered as he struggled to contain his excitement and nervousness. Gripping his brush as the paints and magic swirled around him. Threatening to burst with the bottled up emotions which his masters had so carefully urged him to keep in line. Inviting the other to view his work personally in his studio was rather bold of Hwei. But perhaps this man would’ve understood his plight? He seemed well versed in the craft.

There was a gentle knock on his door, Hwei stood upright from his slouched position, the nervousness swirling in his eyes. Hues of green, purple and blue. Mixing in a frenzy as he struggled calmed his nerves, eyes shifting back to a swirl of fuchsia and gold . Breathing to himself deeply he opened the door, smiling softly at the visitor as he stood in the frame. “Ah, master, I’m pleased you came. I was beginning to worry that perhaps I didn’t make it interesting enough. Please, come in.” He says stepping aside to allow him entry.

He had prepared some of his works for the other to view. Three canvases, all with varying imagery. Though their beauty was undeniable, they lacked something. A fourth canvas stood covered by fabric, ink dripping from the edge. A mess of swirling colors and from the spatter, less composed than the others. Hwei seemed to avoid it as he spoke, leading the man around.

“I am… for simplicities sake, struggling.” His eyes are tired, his seems stressed as he paces himself around his studio. “I feel as if my art is not what I want it to be, perhaps I am unfit for the title of artist? I cannot tell if it is a lack of skill or perhaps a lack of inspiration. I need…. I need help..” his hands wring together, clearly distraught. “My visions fail me, my masters say that these are perfection but they.. they lack something, these are not of my own.”

A hum emanates from the artist as he works with his magic. Lost in thought as his fingers moved meticulously to create a piece that was a mix of sculpture and paint. Pulling at the paint with his fingers, the canvas which burst with color soon became a three-dimensional piece. Shifting in color and shimmering in the soft candle light the paints followed what they were told by Hweis vision.

He envisioned a marble statue, etched with gold, overgrown with ivy vines that shimmer in the moonlight an alluring purple. The gold of the statue worn as much as the marble, which looked like it struggled to stay upright. Yes, his vision was rather vivid, beautiful. He could see the roots of the ivy ripping apart the rock causing it to crack. Overtaking it so it blanketed the stone.

Then he pauses, the humming stopping with in inhale as vibrant purple and blue eyes look around. He can sense a visitor, the hues of the room shifted in his eyes as the aura of the stranger came into view. A violent red, staining their body, he could see how the aura of death clings around their mouth and hands. As if stained with invisible blood that soaked deep into them. “You should knock, friend.” his voice is soft, welcoming nevertheless. “I am sorry to be so engrossed in my work if you were standing there for long. I tend to be rather focused when making pieces.”

He stands at the edge of a road, eyes staring towards the dry plains that stretch out as far as he can make them. From what his sight could absorb, flecks of gold shimmer on the blades of grass. Sunlight reflected on the dried edges soaked with dew which misted the area in the early morning.

The deep hues and shimmering brightness dappled his eyes as his vision came to be. Golden fields flowed in the wind, the warm air flowing peacefully. Expressionism at its finest, he could see each individual stroke that created the land.

His gaze softened, irises flickering golden, orange, and red. Matching the autumn colors that the grass had taken due to their lack of rainwater. Hwei could see the beauty in such despair, he understood that nature ran its course. Yet while everything withered under constant bombardment of the sun's rays, the golden and brown of the dried blades of grass that begged for mercy swayed pitifully in the wind. Rustling, as if the noise were but a chorus of empty hallow bones wich rattled together.

“It’s sad to see things die. But there is beauty in absence, for nothing is ever truly empty. It simply bides its time to reemerge into new life.”

His eyes stare at the other rather pathetically as thin fingers play around, fiddling with the tassel that hung from the center of his outfit. "Oh... please don't be so kind to me. This is my fault, truly."

Hwei had knocked over a vase in his clumsiness. He was invited into this mans home and the first thing he did was back into some priceless object. Although, admittedly it wasn't entirely his fault, rather he was terrified of how quick one of Silcos men had invaded his space. Suddenly, he had an extreme sense of clarity, this place was not somewhere he should be. It wasn't a simple house party, it was a den. He felt like a prey animal stuck there with all the glaring eyes staring at him. Save for Silcos, who seemed rather calm regarding the events that unfolded in mere seconds.

His dismissiveness didn't give Hwei any sense of comfort.
