Has the digital age killed the typeface
Looking around at brand typography, it can feel like a dark dystopian design world out there, void of creativity. It’s like The Handmaid’s Tale, we’ve dressed our brands in typographic outfits of sameness, no one stands out or has their own voice, and nowhere is this more obvious than in the logos we encounter every day.
Brand identities have almost universally adopted the uniform of conformity, in the shape of the sans serif typeface. It’s as if we’ve sent our fonts into the wasteland to fend for themselves – thinking they no longer have anything to offer.
Bentley, R. (2022). Has the digital age killed the typeface? [online]. Available from: https://michoncreative.co.uk/articles/has-the-digital-age-killed-the-typeface/.
Just like the brutalist architecture of the sixties, the sans serif was born out an ethos of social utopianism.
The brutalist buildings of the 60’s projected modernism and self-confidence, with their stark, simplistic and fit-for-purpose style because they were created out of necessity – to house the masses.
Today’s utopian brand vision is one of inclusivity and accessibility, causing companies to clamber for identities that won’t offend or turn potential customers off. The sans serif’s simplicity fits the bill, going a long way to explain its popularity. There’s no room for offence, confusion or misinterpretation.
When writing my dissertation, I described how AI bases its outcomes on machine learning and what already exists, however by doing so, you limit the creation of new trends. I wrote a lot about styles like brutalism and how they're birthed out of creativity, and when relied on, AI hinders this.
What I'm trying to say is that sometimes, if you take too much inspiration from those around you and try to maintain youthful and trendy with branding, you can lose a sense of identity. The uniqueness of a designer or brand comes from looking within yourself, which Is why I think heritage is such an important part of branding.

weird questions for writers! #1, #4, #25, #32
1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?
Times New Roman, 12 point. When I was younger I used to pick a different fun font for whatever new project I was working on, but I can't be arsed anymore lol. Whatever I write these days gets posted in a different font regardless so I just use the one I deem the least obtrusive.
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
Tundra. I've always thought it sounded and looked cool af. I love that there's one neat word for "frozen wilderness." English does a lot of things in super weird and ugly ways, but not this one.
(I just looked up the etymology and it came to English from Russian. because of course it did.)
25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?
Ahhh this one's hard because I tend to think all details are important to the story and reveal something about the character!
I guess this might count: I recently wrote dialogue from Samson where he said he "barely" got Cullen to go to the Hanged Man pub while they were living together in Kirkwall. I keep thinking: what does that mean? Did Samson talk Cullen into it, and then proceed to get belligerently drunk and threaten to fight some thugs in an alley or something? Forcing Cullen to mediate a situation he did not want to be in and vowed never to be a part of again?
I mean it sounds like a fic now that I'm writing it out like this lmfao
32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?
The opening chapter of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood comes to mind. I've read and reread that book for almost 20(!) years now, and every time I feel like I'm coming back to absorb something essential for my own writing. (And I have noticed my writing get closer to it in style over time, which has pleased me.)
This is the first paragraph:
We slept in what had once been the gymnasium. The floor was of varnished wood, with stripes and circles painted on it, for the games that were formerly played there; the hoops for the basketball nets were still in place, though the nets were gone. A balcony ran around the room, for the spectators, and I thought I could smell, faintly like an afterimage, the pungent scent of sweat, shot through with the sweet taint of chewing gum and perfume from the watching girls, felt-skirted as I knew from pictures, later in miniskirts, then pants, then in one earring, spiky green-streaked hair. Dances would have been held there; the music lingered, a palimpsest of un-heard sound, style upon style, an undercurrent of drums, a forlorn wail, garlands made of tissue-paper flowers, cardboard devils, a revolving ball of mirrors, powdering the dancers with a snow of light.
So much conveyed in one paragraph with such beautiful language and imagery. Ugh, kill me. It's one of my favorite books of all time.
Questions here.

‘ The Handmaid’s Tale’ Possesses Its First True Me Too Instant.
Welcome to My Red Peninsula. Federal government authorities have claimed that if they discharge little ones to their purported parents without a prolonged screening procedure, this might result in some being actually placed in the custodianship of risky offenders or youngster traffickers.

Receive young children involved in decorating thank-you notes, baking biscuits for a pal or donating items to less fortunate little ones - and point out exactly how excellent this experiences to create someone else's time more beautiful. This font style will appear remarkable along with school certificates and other activities for school-aged children. - Before making a vacation to ICA, xerox the K type as well as take throughout the original one about that time. It sought this tragedy that amaHlubi ended up being cannibals. My mother had skillfully sent the children to her moms and dads location. Yet I simply don't make believe to have actually thought any type of individual pity for a guy which I had never observed; that type of tenderness's generally cant; and also besides, all mine was needed to have for on my own. This performance also marks the very first time the Mellotron was utilized by John Paul Jones, the strip replay maker was utilized to permit Jones the capability to simulate the cord incriminations during The Rain Song, the first model of the song is actually excellent, the heavy area is pretty remarkable and really dynamic. That yellow slip from report is stapled together with the 'Request for Abdication from msia citizenship(processing simply)' form as well as xerox of my msia birth certificate that possess confirmation stamp on that. As well as there is actually no have to fill up the Malaysian Citizenship Certification pillar. When you out from Singapore, as the ICA strongly motivate to utilize Singapore passport. In reality, I possessed an excellent chat today with my younger son concerning all this. When he visited Ta'if to address the message of Allah, its folks mistreated him, misused him and hit him along with stones. For over 14 years she has functioned as a relaxation as well as skill-set progression leader, a very early childhood years instructor and a mentor assistant, operating in elementary schools and also with special needs kids between 4 and also 11 years of age. Unlike other youngsters, the young Virgo might certainly not be actually really fond of fairy stories and also pretended. For those 15 years I was absolutely awaiting the days when my much younger kid switches 16 so it might be safe for us to escape. Bringing children (or even a better half who imitates a child) is actually a certain technique to load your pushcart with impulse purchases. Once again, the flowers knit on theses women encounter, http://Health-style-2018.Info/ help remind of life, the wildness from the plant life that takes roots off anywhere, womanhood as well as pureness simultaneously. Its own a wonderful as well as quite special time to show all love and also joy and happiness along with your nurturing and also caring dad. Or even he may merely keeping Malaysia key for dual citizenship. I provided the documents as well as documentations on Oct 4. The letter of intent to renounce is ready for collection on Oct 9. If your parents are mentally undesirable individuals that make you believe poor, you do certainly not prefer them in your life. Often a properly worded letter will definitely allow you to impart your feelings where a talk will certainly not. Social progression is actually an essential part from being a toddler due to the fact that that overviews how young children communicate with people around all of them.

Tuesday Smillie: Aesthetic Strategies (10/11 at 5:15pm, Milstein Hall)
Smillie’s art work strikes at a dynamic intersection between contemporary exhibition quality work and current events and protests. He is inspired by the “theatricality” that people put into protests, many of which are directed at social media audiences. Smillie spoke about the Ohio abortion bill protest as a particularly potent example that utilized the power of symbol to send a message. Women sitting in the front row of the hearing wore red robes and white bonnets which reflected those of the characters in the novel and TV series, The Handmaid’s Tale. He also spoke of other theatrical protests related to the most recent election. Smillie also voiced his interest in how social media activates social and political scenes, and how those digital conversations are translated to the streets.
The graphics that are used in protests are essential. Smillie emphasized the labor that goes into these graphics, in many cases being made by hand, and how this impacts the message that each individual is attempting to convey. The sociopolitical message suddenly becomes personal and relatable. One can identify the effort that was invested. An example of this that he identified was the women's suffrage movement.
Along with the personal effort that goes into these graphics, the message that they are relaying must be clear and legible. The font used is very important and often overlooked. However, Smillie pays careful attention to this aspect of his designed works. Sans Serif is a very common font for protest graphics due to the clean lines and curves of the letters.
One of the questions that I wanted to ask but someone was able to ask it before I had the chance was: Did he, Tuesday Smillie, ever take his art to the streets? He mentioned that he has only done this with one of his works (depicted above) because he’s interested in the gallery setting as it’s more “personal”. In response to this answer I was still curious why. Protest graphics are designed to convey a message to a large group of people; connecting with individuals from all social classes, all religious backgrounds, all educational backgrounds etc. This style of art wants to be where the people are, the gallery setting seems a bit buttoned down? Perhaps I’m wrong; it would have been nice to speak with him more in person.
One more note: I also saw connections between his work and Xu Bing’s work. Both artists are enthralled with font, message, and symbol. Ultimately, how art can act as a communication device for social and political issues.

Bilan Cinema 2017
19/ The Young Lady de William Oldroyd (avril)
Tumblr media
14/ Battle of the sexes de Valerie Faris et Jonathan Dayton (novembre)
Tumblr media
10/ The Lost City of Z de James Gray (mars)
Tumblr media
Ce dernier plan me hante encore.
9/ Coco de Lee Unkrich (novembre)
Tumblr media
5/ Star Wars Épisode VIII : The Last Jedi de Rian Johnson (dĂ©cembre)
Tumblr media
« Was he slow » élue meilleure chanson de l'année.
3/ Wonder Woman de Patty Jenkins (juin)
Tumblr media
Get Out de Jordan Peele
Song to Song de Terrence Malick
Dunkerque de Christopher Nolan (
La PlanÚtes des Singes : Suprématie de Matt Reeves
120 Battements par Minute de Robin Campillo
Le Redoutable de Michel Hazanavicius
Les mentions spéciales :
Les Figures de L'Ombre de Theodore Melfi
Brimstone de Martin Koolhoven
Sans Pitié de Byeon Seong-hyeon
Spider-Man : Homecoming de Jon Watts
-saison 3 de The Fall
-saison 3 de Fargo
-saison 3 de The Leftovers
-saison 2 de The Crown
-11.22.63 (parce qu'on me l'a conseillé)
-The White Queen (parce que Rebecca Ferguson)

Hello, book-dragons! My constantly stressed state is very excited to tell you about all the things I’m looking forward to in the near and upcoming future! From books, movies, music, anime and manga and whatever strikes my fancy. So without further ado let’s begin with the movies I’m looking forward to

Movies/TV Shows
Thor: Ragnarok – It’s coming out soon but exams are coming up and I have an essay due! NOOOOooooooooooooooooo
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda – or should I say ‘Love, Simon’ . Amazing title, amazing and now I need a trailer. ooor just the whole movie
.. please?
Ferdinand – Ferdinand is an adorkable bull.
WONDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – ‘nuff said
Voltron: Legendary Defenders Season 5 – Season 4 just came out, I binge-watched it in a day, my feelings and emotions got wrecked and now I NEED SEASON 5!!!!!
Anime & Manga
Feast your eyes on the amazing animation of Violet Evergarden It is an upcoming animation project from Kyoto Animation and if that stellar and top notch animation doesn’t convince you that A) it’s going to be visually stunning and B) amazing overall, I don’t know what will.
Volume 5 of Behind the Scenes!!! – I still need Volume 4 though but don’t you fret I’ll have it in my hands very, very soon *evil laughter*
Volume 4 of The Seven Princes in the Thousand Year Labyrinth – This series is literally just so beautifully drawn, filled with beautiful characters and a touch of crazy, murder and suspense
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc – I loved Cardcaptor Sakura and now there is not only a new ARC but new cards and everything. SIGN ME UP!!!!
Books
We’ve reached the part that you are probably here for: books. Here are the upcoming releases that I am really, really, REALLY looking forward to:
Dark in Death – It’s Lieutenant Eve Dallas and another crime. Of course I’m looking forward to this

Whichwood – Admittedly the cover is beautiful and makes me want to read it but the premise is also very promising.
Fracture Me (also Shatter Me #5 & #6) – OK probably shouldn’t be to hyped about this because that may lead to disappointment but I DON’T CARE! Reread this series recently and just remembered why I loved it. Needs no further explanation, me thinks

Long Way Down – I was scrolling through the upcoming releases on Goodreads and came across this one. It is not something that I would pick up normally however it sounds like something that will make me think and mess up my emotions. What more could you want in a book?
Year One – an end of the world type of series which is very, very different to Nora Robert’s previous trilogies so I am very excited!
Saga Vol 1 & 2– This is actually not an upcoming release but I borrowed it recently and it is coming. I’ve seen it around and I recently just got back into graphic novels so I thought I would give it a try! (Actually, I think by the time this post is up I may have already read these
. But I’ll put it in any way)
Shout about the things you’re looking forward to in the comments!
Looking Forward To Hello, book-dragons! My constantly stressed state is very excited to tell you about all the things I’m looking forward to in the near and upcoming future!

Emma King rewrites George Orwell's 1984 using Donald Trump's tweets
London-based graphic designer Emma King has rewritten the first chapter of George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four using US President Donald Trump's tweets
Inspired by a resurgence of interest in dystopian literature and Trump's online activity, King used an online archive to navigate through more than 30,000 of the US president's tweets, before placing them amongst Orwell's text.
She began by pasting the selection of quotes into InDesign. Words from the novel were coloured red and positioned vertically down the page, while the tweets were laid out horizontally.
"The project creates a juxtaposition between Donald Trump's tweets and the narrative of Nineteen Eighty-Four to suggest the parallels between the themes of the book and Trump's rise to power," King told Dezeen.
"Any words that Trump hasn't tweeted are included alone, and they're usually the more florid, descriptive words, or the neologisms unique to the novel such as 'Ingsoc', 'doublethink' or 'thoughtcrime'," she continued.
For the font, King chose Sabon – a serif typeface commonly used for body text in books.
"Using a serif font helps to re-contextualise the tweets away from their digital origins on Twitter, where they would be seen in a sans serif," she said.
"By setting the tweets in Sabon, as a traditional book would be, it treats them with the same sense of authority and legitimacy as a publishing manuscript, and provides a link to the literary nature of the constructed text, the narrative of Nineteen Eighty-Four," she continued.
Originally, the designer wanted to exhibit the project as a fifteen-metre scroll, hinting at both ancient reading methods and the present-day scrolling of webpages.
But having witnessed a growing interest in dystopian novels, perhaps in light of the presidential election and through TV shows like The Handmaid's Tale, she changed the project's format to a 150-page A3 book that is hardback and horizontally bound.
King embarked on the "1984 by @realdonaldtrump" project during her final year at London's Central Saint Martins university – citing an interest in the "role of written language".
"I was interested in the role that written language and the ways in which it is published and shared had to play in the blurring between fact and fiction in our increasingly online culture," she said.
