Vodafone kicks off UK 5G multi-operator RAN era – Telecoms.com
Tumblr media
Vodafone kicks off UK 5G multi-operator RAN era UK operator Vodafone wants everyone to know how much it’s ramping 5G, but the big news was the hard launch of 5G RAN sharing. The approved acronym is MORAN (multi-operator radio access network) and Vodafone reckons it’s the first operator in the UK to ‘support’ it. While there is already extensive passive infrastructure sharing between Vodafone and O2 via CTIL, this new set up involves the active radio. Not only will this save the companies money on buying new kit, it’s also more energy efficient. How, if at all, sharing the RAN will affect the 5G performance of each operator. Vodafone’s announcement focused more on the fact that it’s now offering 5G roaming to the Republic of Ireland, which it seems to think is a big deal and that it has switched on 5G in Belfast, Edinburgh and Leeds. This year will see a succession of ‘look how much 5G we’re doing’ announcements, so just get used to it OK? “We have started the new year as we mean to go on,” said Vodafone UK CEO Nick Jeffery. “We now offer 5G in double the number of places than our nearest rival and we have significantly boosted the capacity of our network. It is ready for the arrival in 2020 of some great new 5G handsets and the next big software release bringing ultra-low latency. Together, these will push 5G to the next level.” In other news Vodafone has been designated the most improved UK network by Umlaut (previously P3), which has a whiff of damning with faint praise about it. It’s also the best for smartphone use indoors, we’re told, and you can see the full Umlaut findings here. Openreach decides to connect more new builds on the house – Telecoms.com
Tumblr media
Openreach decides to connect more new builds on the house UK fixed line infrastructure provider Openreach will now offer to connect new houses to full fibre for free on developments of 20 plots or more. The previous threshold for freeness was 30, so that means at the current rate of building that an additional 13,000 new premises will get their fibre on the house, so to speak. Openreach says 99 percent of houses built that were eligible for this free service used it. Since the launch of its new build scheme in 2016 Openreach has connected 354,000 new homes with full fibre, implying the vast majority of builds are part of larger developments. “We hope these new measures will provide the necessary incentive for housebuilders to adopt this future-proof technology across smaller developments so that no-one’s left behind,” said Kim Mears, MD of Strategic Infrastructure Development at Openreach. “We welcome the government’s intention – outlined in the Queen’s Speech – to amend legislation so that all new build homes are required to have the infrastructure to support gigabit-capable connections, and we will work closely with government and housebuilders on how best to deliver this.” “The customer of today expects, in line with other utility suppliers to be provided with fast, reliable, uninterrupted service upon receiving the keys to their new home,” said Kieran Walker, Technical Director for the Home Builders Federation. “This further step improvement will assist housebuilders in ensuring their customers overall journey is positive one. As you can see from the table below, Openreach has also lowered what it charges for 2-3 plot builds but compensated by raising the price for 4-9 plot builds. As ever Openreach is keen to stress how on-board with the government’s fibre ambitions it is and cites this move as further evidence of that. Now what about connecting those houses that have already been built too? A bunch of operators get together to push 5G and MEC interoperability – Telecoms.com
Tumblr media
A bunch of operators get together to push 5G and MEC interoperability América Móvil, KT Corp., Rogers, Telstra, Verizon and Vodafone have formed a new gang called the 5G Future Forum. The stated aim of the gang is to ‘accelerate the delivery of 5G and mobile-edge computing-enabled solutions around the world.’ It apparently thinks that there are issues around the interoperability of 5G specifications that need sorting out. This doesn’t seem to refer to the 5G standard itself, but rather 5G-enabled solutions like autonomous vehicles, smart factories and so on. “This forum of global leaders in 5G marks an important step in ensuring edge computing works seamlessly for our customers,” said Vinod Kumar, CEO of Vodafone Business. “These new specifications will allow us to offer services that work consistently across the globe and support devices moving between countries. 5G opens up a wealth of opportunities for new solutions and business models and we’re excited to play a role in bringing them to life.” “5G is a key enabler of the next global industrial revolution, where technology will transform how we live and work. It’s critical that technology partners around the world unite to create the most seamless global experience for our customers,” said Hans Vestberg, CEO of Verizon. “We are proud to join with our fellow 5G leaders to unlock the full potential of applications and solutions that will transform with 5G’s fast speeds, high reliability, improved security and single-digit latency.” All the other founding members got a canned quote too but you get the gist. Other than a press release there doesn’t seem to be much else to the forum yes, not even a website. Presumably other operators will be brought into the fold in due course, but the absence of any telecoms or technology specification organisations looks like a potential issue. Indian Supreme Court rejects telcos appeal over government bill – Telecoms.com
Tumblr media
Indian Supreme Court rejects telcos appeal over government bill The billions owed by Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel for historic license fees must be paid after the Indian Supreme Court rejected their appeal. The two massive operator groups appear to be running out of options, having spent the latter half of last year first contesting the fees, then begging for clemency and then finally threatening to exit the market if they’re given no relief over their massive financial burden. Typically the Supreme Court is where you turn to when you’ve tried everything else, but in this case it was that same court that enforced the fees last year. Reuters reports that it’s specifically petitions seeking a review of last year’s order that have been rejected, indicating that the Supreme Court has seen nothing since then to persuade it any mistake was made. In today’s money Vodafone Idea owes £3.9 billion and Bharti Airtel $3 billion. This decision is sure to bring a fresh wave of existential angst from the beleaguered operators. So what next? There will be talk of further petitions and that sort of thing but it looks like the Supreme Court is not for moving. That just seems to leave the political angle. The money is owed to the government, so it’s presumably within its power to at least ease the burden. In most countries MNO competition is considered vital to a healthy telecoms sector, but the way the Indian government has acted since the creation of Reliance Jio suggests otherwise in India.
