relatedly i think people often misunderstand valjean's change of heart after he meets the bishop in a similar way, where they interpret it as him 'deciding to live his life Right' and 'stop committing crimes' or whatever. which is a wild misinterpretation not just because it ignores one of the repeated themes of the book (not just with valjean either but other characters as well) that prison literally sets people up to reoffend & be sent back because of the alienation they face & lack of material means to improve their situation as ex-prisoners in society, But also because the only way he's actually able to improve his situation is... by not working in compliance to the law? like he only doesn't go back to prison bc myriel lets him have the silver & lies to the police for him, and then the only way he's able to live 'normally' after that is by faking his own identity. & his change of heart is explicitly about having lost his willingness to care for other people or believe in human capability for good Not about his deciding the law & justice system is inherently unjust (which it is)

My Live Blog of The Apothecary Diaries Light Novels Volume 1 Chapter 7: Branch (Part 4 of 4)

This is the first time we've gotten all the way to a part 4! The chapters are getting longer (not that I'm complaining).

Maomao is really a contradictory character (not in a bad way). She thinks her efforts are useless, but she tries anyway because, as pessimistic as she is, she still has hope. It's the same with her desire to be unimportant. She says she'll do anything to keep in the shadows, but in the end, she always chooses to help in any way she can.

It's interesting that LN Maomao eats a leaf while Anime Maomao eats the petals. Both are poisonous, so it doesn't matter, but I guess they liked the visuals of the petals better.

Jinshi's also a lot calmer here, just mildly confused.

The anime decided on using the wood burning as the cause, while here they leave it more ambiguous. The anime and LN certainly have their differences even in this scene, but they each have their merits.

Well, to be fair, this is just an alternate explanation, Maomao's not necessarily correct. They'd have to know what plants they used for chopsticks and campfires to know for sure. This is also a good PSA for people to make sure they know what plants they're interacting with, especially in an area they don't live.

"I don't know how important this Jinshi is..." And you will continue to stubbornly not know beyond what's reasonable. Lol

That's the end of the chapter. It was a good one, and it's really fun to see how each form of media portrays this scene.

I reread the manga because I didn't remember how they handled the military plot line, and that's because they just don't mention it. They skip straight to the aphrodisiac. It's understandable since it doesn't really have a lasting impact in the same way the aphrodisiac scene does, but I still like this scene.

As for anime vs ln, the anime feels much more like an investigation as Maomao asks questions to narrow down an answer, while the ln just lists out possibilities that are within her field of knowledge. The anime shows her methodical style, while the ln emphasizes her insistence that she can't know the answers for sure and her tendency to stay on the side of caution.

Jinshi's role is also different. The anime has him explicitly call for her to get her opinion, while the ln has him skirt around asking. I get the feeling that he was testing her. If she showed a reaction, he could keep coming to her, but if she didn't, it wasn't worth it. The anime streamlines the story while the ln shows how sneaky and roundabout he can be. The anime also combines this scene with the aphrodisiac scene, something that makes sense for the medium.

We got a total of 3 on the Jinshi Hot Counter. A respectable number since he didn't mention anyone else's good looks despite Lady Gyokuyou being there.

I've been hyped for this anime for a while now. But watching the 1st episode has still blown my expectations out of the water.

And then i learned Bandai Namco Pictures is making this and now i can't stop comparing this to Birdie Wing Golf Girls' Story. They also made Witch from Mercury. But Birdie Wing is more in line with it because both are about crazy girls doing strenuous activity crazily with Blonde and Black hair gay girl protags.

I'm Finally reading through the apothecary diaries and I fear I will not be normal about this series. I love the little sillies <3
