Growing up in such a large family meant it took more for Sera to be heard or seen. She learned very early on that a basic achievement such as a good grade wasn’t enough to earn a spot on the refrigerator among the several other accolades of her siblings. She had to be the best. It only took a few years more for her to realize how much she hated it. Competing with her brothers and sisters felt wrong on so many levels and she was too much like her mother to want any sort of rift in the family. Sera turned that edge to her studies.

Education was one of the many places that Sera excelled. She was top of almost every class she attended and chose a career in the medical field relatively early on. It was somewhat to spite her father. She saw him as utterly ridiculous in his attempts to isolate his children from what Sera considered the ‘real world’. She wasn’t naive to believe that the conflicts that had changed the world so thoroughly were behind them, but she also didn’t think her father’s survival tactics were quite as necessary as he led them to believe. She placated him by learning as much as she could about field medicine and earned, at bare minimum, a begrudging nod from the man. 

Sera was close with all of her siblings but shared a special bond with her oldest brother, Santiago. She saw him as more of a present and caring father figure than their own father and trusted him more than anyone else, including both of their parents. Until he joined the military. While she was still young, she never could understand why someone would want to make a career out of killing people. For that was all it was used for these days. Nothing good came of any military being in charge and surely everyone learned that through even a vague study of history. But she was wrong. Her relationship with her brother became strained and distant and she stopped speaking to him altogether when she was eventually accepted into medical school. 

Becoming a doctor was the easy part. Being able to utilize those skills to actually help people was something she learned was significantly harder. Sera hated Afterglow but even she could see that the only way to really address the ever present issue of the corporation was from within. She was hired as a physician in their clinic and was the model employee by day. By night she searched for any opportunity to disrupt the harm they spread. Sera’s entire existence was taken up by her sense of duty and compassion for humankind. So much so that she forgot to really cultivate any other relationships or significant pieces that made life what it was. Her sense of competitiveness was in full force and the competition was now a giant corporation bent on holding everyone under their thumb.

Almost by accident, Sera discovered that her brother had left his uniforms behind for the chance at making a more meaningful difference in the world. She had completely ignored his attempts to connect to bring her to Appalachia and instead used her new, and nefarious, employer as the conduit. It wasn’t until she had actually settled in Burnington that she found out he was not only a member of what people were calling the resistance, but he led it. Reconciling with her brother became another goal and she did it the same way she had attempted a relationship with her father, by joining in. It seemed to be more effective this time. 

Given how driven and focused Sera has been thus far in her life, she struggles to fit back in with her brother and all of the adopted pieces of his new family. She dotes on Maisie and adores Lindsay but, for the first time in her life, she feels like something is missing. She can’t for the life of her figure out what that might be but feels that bringing Afterglow a taste of its own medicine might just do the trick.

next to nothing is known about camila's birth parents. they just up and vanished - like the true tornados most people in town had known them to be. while it wasn't expressed outwardly, an adult cam believed the reason to be plain and simple: the mutation she was born with. born with patches of scales across her face and body, that abandonment caused her to subconsciously wear them as an insecurity (visual here). a woman by the name of belinda took cam beneath her wing, effectively becoming the only mother she had ever known. a member of a hidden survivalist compound just outside of devil's elbow's territory, this group effectively became the only family she had ever known.

each member had their place - and belinda's was medicine. she taught her daughter everything she knew. although her adoption was never formal, everyone was well aware she was belinda's girl. camila was smart enough to put the pieces together quickly, that she was not her mother's flesh and blood -- but quite frankly, never took interest in asking. she had all she needed to know. the compound had done well for themselves -- maybe not having much, but they had each other. that is, until tragedy overtook them -- camila still hears the sirens in her nightmares. they were attacked when she was fourteen, leaving her the only recorded survivor. the only mother she had ever known died in her arms.

camila knew better than to stay in one place -- thus, amongst her grief, she began to walk. she walked until her feet felt like they could have been ripped from her body. that is, until she was discovered and taken to civilization... and as she assumed, to safety. little did she know, she was in the hands of afterglow. they patched up her various, severe injuries -- offering a façade of safety. that everything would be okay. that they were the angels amidst a world full of devils.

ever since, she has been under their care. she never had a choice. her prowess as a medical professional was soon revealed upon her arrival -- and she was given the proper training to join their ranks. however, their protection came with a price. a test subject for a lengthy period of time, it only stopped when she became a doctor. although her position allows her to help some -- she also finds herself running tests on individuals just like her. and yet, the best she can do is bite her tounge if she wants to stay alive.
