you owe me a coffee. that’s how it started, right? yeah, it must’ve been something like that, some random nonsense ren decided to throw out there for no real reason. nothing was wrong with the brew dan heng had made that one time, just like there hasn’t been anything outwardly wrong between them since they were forced to work together. well, that’s not entirely true. there’s been something off, a gnawing unease, something that feels fundamentally wrong but not in the way it used to be—not like bloodshed, clashing weapons, or the threat of ending a life. no, things have been strangely abnormal, almost irritatingly good. it’s like trying to smooth out the wrinkles on a canvas with restless hands, and ren’s working harder than ever to keep his composure. the worst part? it feels almost too easy.

you owe me a story. that one came out of nowhere again—ren had shared something about himself entirely on his own, unprompted. not like dan heng had asked ( he most definitely hadn’t ) , but ren had felt compelled to answer anyway. it had come naturally that day. he doesn’t recall the details of the conversation, though it was probably in the middle of dan heng telling him to stop being antagonistic, to which ren, of course, denied doing anything of the sort. dan heng’s dry response had been something along the lines of “you need a new hobby.” that’s when ren had casually mentioned an old hobby he once had, sharing a story about how he tried to pick it up again—and failed. at the time, he was grateful they weren’t face-to-face, thankful for the distance and the device that hid the brief, solemn look on his face, just as he was glad not to see dan heng’s reaction.

that was then. now? it feels like a lifetime ago.

“ i owe you an apology. i’m sorry. ” words he never thought he’d say out loud, least of all to dan heng. ren’s gaze fixates on the shallow cut across the other man’s wrist, a wound that, though minor, is unmistakable. an accident. he isn’t entirely sure how it happened—everything unfolded so quickly. dan heng must have extended his hand at just the wrong moment. it took less than a second: ren, holding cloudpiercer for the first time in what felt like ages, had been testing its weight, spinning and twirling it in his hands, moving just a fraction too fast. the blade barely grazed dan heng, yet it left a small but undeniable mark etched into his skin.

dan heng is clearly about to leave, though ren can’t quite tell if he’s upset. if there’s any subtle change in his expression, ren misses it, too focused on the reddened scratch across dan heng’s skin. the realization comes slowly, that this might not be the first time dan heng has been hurt because of him, but it is the first time ren actually feels guilty about it. and that guilt is suffocating, like a tight knot forming in his chest, gnawing at him with an intensity that feels both ugly and infuriating. a few steps forward, and ren reaches out, grabbing dan heng’s wrist to pull him back. he lifts the injured hand, studying the scratch more closely, though his gaze briefly flickers to dan heng’s face. without giving room for protest, ren presses his lips to the bruised wrist. the kiss is fleeting, but for a moment, he swears he feels a warm pulse beneath his lips. he lets the hand fall, stepping closer still, eyes dropping as he leans in, tension still clinging to the air between them.

“ there, that’s better. ” the stupid grin is back, beaming with pride and contentment. “ you owe me a kiss now. ”

Who’s the cuddler? Ohhh, Nikolai for certain, he cuddles like it’s an olympic sport and he’s the only one worthy of gold medals. But Alina is a good adversary, especially when she’s sleepy.

Who goes to bed late and who wakes up first? Alina’s a night owl, she always goes to bed past midnight, distracted with her things until Nikolai calmly calls for her and suggests she probably should sleep. Nikolai’s the early riser. He practically wakes up with the sun. He says it’s because he loves Alina so much aslkdja

Who sings during daily activities (shower, cooking, etc)? Nikolai. Off-key, loudly and with lots of feeling. Alina secretly loves this about him.

Who takes care of the other on sick days? They take turns, tho Nikolai will always be the dramatic one, no matter if he’s the sick one or the one taking care.

Who gives unprompted massages? Nikolai, again. Especially if he even so much as senses Alina’s a tad stressed.

What activity do they do together in sync? Cooking/baking. Alina’s the baking master while Nikolai’s the cook of the house and they help out each other in turns, looking every bit like a hardened surgeon and their assistant.

Who gives nose/forehead/hand kisses? Nikolai. He will shower Alina with ALL the soft kisses. It always takes her breath away, how much feeling he pours into each kiss.

Who gets jealous? Alina. Not that she doesn’t trust Nikolai, lol, but on less good days she can’t help but be a little jealous of the tall models Nikolai’s mother invites for her parties. That feeling easily passes when she realises Nikolai only has eyes for her.

Soft kisses or passionate kisses? Both. Nikolai’s the king of soft kisses but he too can scorch the land around Alina with his passionate kisses. And Alina, ohohohoh, she makes him weak in the knees as well.

Who brings the other food at work? Alina, because Nikolai always gets so engrossed in his inventions that he forgets about the time. Ironically, when at home, he’s the one that has to remind her of basic stuff like eating.

Who made the first move? Nikolai. With a grand gesture and a lot of cheesy but heartfelt confessions.

Who won’t dress in costume unless it’s a couple costume? Nikolai INSISTS on doing couple costume, even if Alina would much rather stay home and cuddle, really. But she agrees, always, because he makes it worth the trouble.

How was their first date like? It was so funny. Nikolai had everything planned to perfection, but a rainstorm interrupted their picnic, soaking them to the bones, which resulted in the two running back to his place to take hot showers and drink hot chocolate. Nikolai moaned half the time about how he’d finally had gotten the chance to take Alina on a romantic date and it backfired, but Alina loved it nevertheless. She laughed a lot too, which was a great reward on Nikolai’s book.

Who writes love letters/notes to the other? Nikolai! He will shower Alina with all the cute notes and letters, most of the time without her expecting anything at all. Alina keeps them all in an old vintage box she bought a while ago and had been saving for a special occasion.

Who firmly believed the other was their soulmate from early on? It’s no surprise that it was Nikolai. He fell for her very early in their relationship and never once doubted that he’d met his soulmate in Alina.

How much do they touch each other (PDA)? A LOT. Genya and Zoya will tease Alina endlessly over how much she can’t stop touching Nikolai. Hands laced together, nose bumps, fingers drumming on each other’s thighs. The whole shebang.

Do they have cute nicknames for each other? Nikolai calls Alina a lot of cute nicknames, with ‘love’ and ‘my love’ being the most common and ‘Sunshine’ being his favourite, he says it almost as much as he says her name. Alina calls him ‘idiot’ often, and with all the love she has for him.

How do they feel about Valentine’s Day? Do they go on a date? Alina doesn’t care for it at all, since her past experiences involved bad V-Days, but Nikolai always prepares the best dinner ever for the day in question. So, no, they don’t go OUT on a date. they stay in.

Public marriage proposal or something private? Private. Nikolai wants Alina to give her honest, heartfelt answer and public proposals are just... bad. They put pressure on the other person and he doesn’t want that. He wants Alina to decide for her, and her alone.

How long into the relationship before they had sex? Nikolai: “I want us to take it slowly.” Alina: *proceeds to undress him* ...pretty early on. Alina’s thirstier for Nikolai than she expected. aksdja

Who drops innuendos at random? Nikolai’s the king of random innuendos. Especially if only Alina gets them, which prompts a red-as-tomato Alina around confused humans.

Who makes romantic surprises without a reason to? Nikolai again. He just loves Alina so much, whyever wouldn’t he surprise her? Until Nikolai, Alina hated surprises, but with him... Well, she’s quick to change her mind.

How likely are they to have sex in a non-bedroom location? More likely than you think ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Who said “I love you” first and when? Alina blurted it out during a cuddle moment. Nikolai was saying something very nerdy and very Nikolai and she just... said it. It wasn’t planned but she didn’t complain much when Nikolai proceeded to smile like the sun and kiss her endlessly.

Who will sing cheesy romantic songs when drunk? Nikolai *snort* he doesn’t even need to be tipsy, he WILL sing them proudly at any time.

So Sammy is the kindest person and decided to finish the interview unprompted! I already started my analysis so that might be a might messy

Have you grown up in an environment where men who show emotions are seen as less than men and/or have been called homophobic or sexist names because of it? Does this or has it ever had an impact on you? 

I feel that, in my younger years, I would be chastised and shamed if I had my emotional outbursts which even then, were few and far between as I was an introverted child and didn't really like to open myself up much. A good example is when I didn't want to keep going to my dads every weekend as my parents were separated while I was a very young age and I was told not to get upset over trivial things like that. In school, I was bullied for my lack of emotions towards others but the one time I had an angry emotional outburst due to a teacher harassing me during lessons to the point where it built up and I exploded - I was bullied by other kids for being 'mental' or a 'psycho' just for not sitting idly by and letting myself be the target of a teacher's temper.

Do you feel alone in this problem?

No, I don't. I'm sure many men have it ingrained into their heads that showing emotion is a sign of weakness and it must be punished, but a lot of men know that deep down, showing emotions is perfectly normal and even healthy, but due to the way people are raised, there will always be some sort of barrier or emotional blockage that prevents people from showing their true colours even when it is the best option for them.

Since your grandma is ill, does it have an impact on showing emotions around friends and family? Do you feel like you’re more able to show emotion or less able? 

My grandmother has been ill, and has since the last time you asked me questions prior to this interview, passed. On the night I got the awful phone call, notifying me of her death, I rushed to my aunts home (where my grandma had passed), and sat around with my family as they all bawled their eyes out, leaning over her body and just in absolute disarray as they learned she was gone. I was there, with everyone, and while I was very upset myself, I did not cry or say anything. I made a tiny speech to my grandma as the family sat around and it triggered more bad crying, but again, I did not join in on that action. However, I feel as though had I shown emotion like tears in this situation, I would have been given the deepest sympathy and been understood by my peers, but I feel as though I didn't cry because of how I've been taught to repress my emotions and I did later release tears when I was by myself.

Has society’s definition of masculinity had a negative impact on your mental health? How so?

Yes, I would say so. I'm not tall and I don't have the most attractive body ever and my face makes me look very young, so I do feel as though trying to set myself to society's standard of masculinity has affected me negatively mentally, because of the fact I know society sets the bar extremely high for men and from the outset I have a lot of qualities that are deemed to be the opposite of masculine.

Whilst being at school, have you been given any resources by your school to help you with any problems you may be facing, like help lines, counsellors, therapists, etc.

I would see random posters on boards around my school, but no one ever actively tried to prompt kids into using those resources appropriately. They were, in my opinion, just for show, because no teacher or even counsellor in my school personally, cared about the kids. I have a vivid memory of talking to a school counsellor and the gist of the conversation was that other people have it worse and I should be content with the less than favourable life I lead at present, because it could be far worse.

What do you think are some solutions for it to be more publicly acceptable for men to be more in touch with their sensitive side? (Ad campaigns, more government funds in mental health, learning about this issue in school are some examples).

I feel as though quite a lot of it is to do with parents - most parents are from a generation where all men were considered the 'alpha' of a family. As we've changed as a generation, we've realised it is okay for men to show their true colours emotionally and to offer help for men for their mental health issues. I do think awareness on the serious issues of mental health should be a priority in schools because depression is very common these days and letting people know they're not alone is of paramount importance. Awareness for men's mental health and ending the stigma behind it is a good way for us to progress forward.
