I'm sure Adelard Dekker wasn't the only one to give the Fears most of their names (it was mostly Robert Smirke I'm sure) but god... I am just so in love with the way he describes the Extinction, along with all the names he gives. It really establishes that this 15th Fear has just as much power as the other 14 in such a shorter amount of time (and perhaps even more so since even avatars like Peter are afraid of it)!!!

i love that the "lower" entities, filth and choke, so pointedly hate the institute

i think part of it is the sort of entity color wheel that puts the eye in opposition to fears that thrive in obfuscation and darkness

but i also think it's a direct opposition to the sort of structure and process that beholding has... the institute and its sister sites are really the only organizations of their kind

even the dark with the people's church and the desolation with the cult of the lightless flame, they're organizations sure but they don't have the expansive formal structure of the institute

and it would make sense that the more "primitive" fears would be so totally opposed to that sort of structure, and would feel an innate need to tear it down

to return it to the dirt

this is soooooo juicy in terms of jon's rationalization of his own existence and it's so interesting that he uses gertrude as a benchmark because she was actually way more human than jon. way way more human than jon. and he never sees her that way. he refuses to.

and the interesting thing is that i think jon does know, actually, that he is more of a monster than gertrude ever was. i think he's actually more afraid of becoming the kind of human who finds what gertrude did acceptable.

but he equates his own transformation with becoming ruthless and cold like she was, when in reality she was just. that kind of woman. she was cold and ruthless and iron willed in a very human way.

and i think sort of like how jon deeply misjudges the distortion, that this is another one of his intellectual blind spots where no amount of evidence to the contrary will stop him from believing that gertrude was evil because of her beholding alignment, because of what she served, rather than being a cold hard bitch who used her position under beholding to her advantage

there is something about how the worst thing that ever happened to tim was that he stood and watched when he thought that grimaldi was worse-than-killing danny and

the worst thing that ever happened to jon was watching this happen to a kid twice his age... following him through the whole neighborhood trying to do something to get that book back but just watching it happen instead

and they both end up at the magnus institute, under beholding's purview

and then

yes for both tim and jon experiencing the dread powers made them obsessed with them, but something about how their own experiences are both directly linked to feeling helpless as bystanders

He dreams of it often, and always the same. He knows it is his dream, and no one elses. He knows it because it never has the sharp, singular clarity of the dreams he watches in his Archive cycle. It is vague and shifting, produced by a human subconscious. And always the same.

A corpse propped against a stone wall, its decay spurred by the dark, dank air of its makeshift crypt, left rotting in a forgotten pocket of air a mile beneath the earth. Its leathery face shrinkwrapped around its slack jawed skull. Its ragged, empty sockets hollow and infinite behind its drooping eyelids.

Each time, Jon's dream brings him to its mausoleum and leaves him there to make his own choices. Each time he will draw near, stoop to his knees, take the blind death's head into his hands, and press his living lips to its. He will wake uncertain and afraid.

Something has marked him, he frets, given him this vision apart from all his others. The Buried? The End? What force calls to him so arduously from beneath the earth? What force waits nightly for his breath to pour over its cold, unfeeling lips?

He waits nightly for his dream to change. For spiders to pour forth from the corpse's mouth when it meets his. Or Filth to swarm out from its face and into his.

Most ardently, he hopes the death's head might one night wake beneath his lips. To tell him its secrets, give him its name, and kiss him back.

i think this may have been the first time that jon Knew something in a beholding way... like he has never worked at an archive before and has no experience in off handedly dating historical documents... especially given the second part where he considers his own transformation idk i take that as evidence

it is so cruel dramatic irony that one of the best corruption statements (there are no bad corruption statements) has my deadname in it... like if ever it could be made clear that when you gaze into the magnus archives the archive gazes back 😒🙄
