there's a soft, quiet aura of sureness to thanatos, one that he had been jealous of since they were children. thanatos was the sure twin. the steady twin. the level twin. everything hypnos wasn't. everything ashton isn't. death is a constant, sleep is fleeting. he watches his twin, the steady way their chest rises and falls as they sleep. he'll admit, he hasn't watched thanatos sleep since they were young gods, when they were still bound at the hip. he hasn't watched thanatos sleeping in eons, but tonight, his eyes are glued to his twin. maybe it's the distance between them now, and this is the closest hypnos gets to completely being with them, this is the closest hypnos gets to inside thanatos' head now. his lips flit up into a smile as his twin rolls closer, ashton brushing hair off their forehead. even in sleep, there is a steady, quiet thrum of strength that radiates from them. ashton wishes he could be more like thanatos, more like what everyone expects of him. jealousy laps at his neck, but he shakes it off. no, he won't let this get the better of him, not when all of his soul is together again, peacefully.

it's not until he hears a soft sigh, almost a snore, that he realizes his twin had fallen asleep on his shoulder. thanatos had been resting there just a few moments before, mumbling something about the movie ashton had insisted he watched. in his time on the mortal plane, he had become a little obsessed with movies. and he insists on showing thanatos every one that he had liked even a little. it's late in the night now, though, late enough that even ashton's eyes are starting to get heavy. he shouldn't be surprised the other has tapped out, even if it is against his will. he knows thanatos always sleeps better when they are together. both of them did. everything just felt easier, better, since the two of them had stop squabbling so much. they had started to come around to each other again, have started to maybe, a little, break through the thick sheet of ice that stands between them, that they had both added to over the last few years. but it's been quite some time since his twin had fallen asleep on him quite like this, unintentionally and easily, peacefully even, and ashton can't bring himself to wake them. he's accepted his fate to be stuck like this until thanatos wakes up or moves.

ashton snatches his arm away from his twin, a bitter and resentful action as he turns his nose up at them. "i'm fine, thanatos. no need for you to baby me." he had gotten a pension for less than savory earthly habits, the droopiness to his features showing his indulgence in a derivative from his own opium poppies. humans knew how to have a good time, and hypnos can't resist it. "you are not my keeper."
