     ❛ oh, a tendency. right. but let me guess, this time totally isn’t an exaggeration though, right? ❜

     as exasperated as she is, cinder can’t hide the amusement in her eyes, and her lips quirk up in a traitorous smile — the same smile that always seems to find its way onto her face whenever fred’s around. metal fingers rest gently against her cheek as she watches fred bounce in her doorway, the edge of his shirt dangerously close to rubbing against the grease stain she’d left on the doorknob earlier, and she stifles a laugh with the back of her hand as he continues to gush.

     ❛ you’re impossible, ❜ she says, voice fond, as she bumps the open drawer with her hip to shut it. cinder spins the wrench in her hand before pointing it at him, mock annoyance painted on her face ( even if she knows he can easily spot the truth in her eyes ).

     ❛ this, ❜ she says, jabbing the wrench in his direction before dropping it on the table, fingers reaching for the already grease-covered towel to wipe her hands on, ❛ is the last time i’m letting you pull me away from work to show me something. seriously. last time, okay? ❜ a lie, but whatever helps you sleep a night, cinder. ❛ at this rate i’m never getting any work done. ❜

      stars, this guy’s gonna be the death of her. honestly. 

      ❛ you can’t have ‘ me time ’ in my garage, fred. ❜ she says, lifting her hands up to make finger quotes. it’s only then she remembers she doesn’t have her gloves on, and all it takes is the overhead light glinting off of her metal hand for her to drop them back to her side, joke forgotten. screw your head back on, cinder, he doesn’t care. 

      luckily, the laugh that bubbles out of him at her words seems to do the trick, and she’s right back to staring down at him with a look that would suit a scolding mother more than an irritated teenage cyborg. if you didn’t know them, you probably would think cinder was the older of the two. she places her hands on her hips, kicking at his side ( gently, but not too gentle ) with her eyebrows raised. she hopes he can’t see the amusement she’s desperately trying to keep out of her expression, but the grin on his face proves that she’s more transparent than she thinks she is. she gives in eventually, offering him a small smile as she pads the bottom of her boot against his shirt again.

      ❛ get out of here, dork. or at least go get us something to eat. ❜

       ❛ fred. ❜ if you didn’t know them, you’d probably assume cinder was the elder of the two simply from the long-suffering sigh that leaves her lips after she speaks. she stares him down, unimpressed, as she takes in the matching outfits her friend and his miniature robotic sidekick are sporting. she’s not even sure where he could get two matching outfits in such drastically different sizes; minimax is quite literally the size of a child — and never mind, it’s fred. he absolutely got them commissioned personally, and made specifically for this. she has to admit, the dedication is impressive. 

      the corner of her mouth quirks upwards in slight amusement, and she gestures towards the little robot next to him, raising an eyebrow.  

        ❛ i think if either of you are the son, it’s probably you. ❜

       ❛ yeah, i’ve noticed that too. ❜ she’s done her fair share of it as well, though the computer is her brain can be pretty helpful with supplying her the info needed to actually know what she’s doing. from the looks of fred and what she’s been able to figure out about his personality in the short time she’s known him, though, cinder’s going to assume that he’s done a lot more pretending than actually knowing. he has the kind of go with the flow vibe that cinder wishes she could afford to have — especially when it comes to moments and decisions like this. she’s thankful to have fred here, unconventional advice or not.

       she fiddles with the hem of her left glove, a small frown on her face as she catches a flash of the metal hidden under the thick fabric. she’s grown more comfortable with it lately — much more than she thought she ever would be — but there’s still moments when the reminder of what she is can set a weight on her heart. she bites the inside of her cheek as she thinks, looking at fred for a moment before sighing. 

       ❛ sometimes it just feels like i shouldn’t go far, i guess. like, i’m good where i am, you know? i don’t want to ruin what i have. ❜ but she can’t help the hopeful smile that sneaks its way onto her face as her thoughts begin to wander once more. ❛ you really think they’d let me into the school? even with — everything? ❜
