vik had thought he believed in love at first sight as a child, but falling for rosa had been completely different and the entire experience had left him with a sour taste for love. he channeled all of that into his books and focused on surviving, and not much of that changed upon returning home. then he started working at the mall. the boss was showing him around on the first day, taking him from office to office to meet his coworkers. now, in his many years of dramatic romance writing, he had written the moment a thousand times. you know that moment, where the two protagonists meet for the first time and sparks fly and all that other mushy bullshit? he’d dreamed of it a million different ways with a million different fictional people, but never for himself. he didn’t believe it could happen to him.
except, it had. it wasn’t that the lawyer was beautiful--although she was easily the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen--that drew him in. it was the world in her eyes. she understood in a way that only those who suffered could. he couldn’t erase a decade of his trauma and shoot his shot, but he didn’t have to. she was there, every day. it started with him taking the long way to his office just so he would pass by hers. when he realized he was in earlier most days, he’d bring her a coffee, leaving it quietly on her desk. he didn’t claim the act, he wasn’t looking for credit for the kind gesture. he just wanted to make her morning a little better.
this morning, in a strange twist of fate, he was running late. despite being long-used to the insomnia and night terrors, the especially bad nights sometimes caught him off guard. he had finally managed to catch a couple of hours in the early morning, sleeping right through his alarm. of course, he couldn’t forget her morning coffee, but if he was already late, he may as well pick her up a muffin too. he knocked softly on her office door, trying to silence the fluttering nerves in his chest. “sorry, i’m a little late this morning, but would you like some coffee?” he was just trying to be friendly, that's all. he didn’t have many friends in town, and he was more than happy to have her as a friend if it meant having her in his life at all.
