Albi s'étire paisiblement sur les berges du Tarn.

La Cité épiscopale d’Albi, classée par l’UNESCO au Patrimoine mondial de l’humanité, possède de nombreux points d'intérêt :

- la Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile construite entre 1282 et 1492

                         Baldaquin (XVIe siècle) de l'entrée méridionale

                        Clocher, d’une hauteur de 78 m, terminé en 1492

     Fresques de la voûte en croisée d'ogives, peintes entre 1509 et 1512                     (Dimensions : 97 m de long, 28 m de large et 30 m de haut)

- le Palais de la Berbie (XIIIe siècle), de l’occitan “Bisbia” qui signifie “évêché ", ancien palais épiscopal, où se trouve le Musée Toulouse-Lautrec

Marguerite’s Beguine spirituality was thus both vernacular and lay, a deliberate move away from the center and toward the margins. Hers became a mysticism of the margins, which yet laid claim to authenticity and spoke with the authority of its own experience. Addressed to a female audience and with a feminine divine, Dame Amour, at its center, Marguerite's mysticism is overtly female, entailing a set of values at odds with patriarchal norms. Her Mirror catches reflections not only of the interior life of the soul, but, through inversion, of the kind of church and society in which "simple souls" could flourish. Unlike earlier Beguines like Marie d'Oignies, Hadewijch of Antwerp, or Mechthild of Magdeburg, Marguerite saw her simple souls as having a teaching mission toward "sainte èglise la petite," the Little Church ruled by reason rather than love. She realized that her vision of the mystical relation to God could develop only in the context of an external ecclesiastical order whose present hierarchy was inverted, with the "Great Church" of Gods lovers on top, and the present hierarchy of the "Lesser Church" subverted. Out of her mystical vision of a subverted hierarchy arose an inverted moral vision of Love over Reason. In their subversion of ecclesiastical structure and values, her mysticism and morality were boldly gendered, embodying her particularly female perspective. She consequently set herself and the Greater Church of Gods true lovers in direct opposition to what she must have judged as the ecclesiastical institutions petty-mindedness.
