#—— IV. VIKINGS : NEVER TRY TO DISCERN HIS SUFFERING. HE / SHROUDED IN SORROW AND BLINDED BY IT ALL
HEDA ONTARI KOM AZGEDA
words peel off of the man like nails through rotting carcases ; while seemingly easy there’s a strange sense of wrongness to them , even though she can’t quite place it. but that sense of wrongness could simply be the man before her ; ivar , was — a dangerous creature , and one she knew better than to speak with unless spoken to. ice-grey eyes focus on the kife between his figures , a small slip of her lips and she’d be finding out out how deep the small knife can cut. the sameness , that came with speaking to one who thought and acted oh so similarly to herself on the outside , was bizzare. she wondered if , this was what it was like for others to confornt her , the danger she felt at the simple notion that trying to read ivar was like trying to read a black solid wall. she wonder’s what she’s done form him to confide such , strange words in her direction. but wonder was not something that would keep her head on her shoulders if the wrong word was spoken. « superiority , what a god-like quality. i have yet to meet a man who is in all ways superior to any other. » she pauses, lips pursing for a moment. « but , then again , you ivar , are not like most men, so it seems mankind finally has it’s contendor for it’s place amongst the gods. »
TO BE A KING. TO BE LIKE A GOD. TO BE A GOD. He’s been playing with all these notions for his purposes, ( revenge for the murder of his mother, ) for his ambitions, ( to be far more famous than his own father, ) . . . and he likes none. Ivar still prefers to honor Floki’s guidance and to live by the gods. HE’S GODLY. ❝ Well, maybe not superior in all ways. I’m a cripple——— How could I be superior to any capable warrior, no matter where they are from, in questions of combat on the battlefield ? ❞ He cackles. Eyes lit with mischief as he arches both of his eyebrows. It’s both the truth & a lie. Maybe they both know he is not entirely helpless either though. Underestimation more often than not leads to hesitation. That’s when Ivar strikes. He lashes out. Enraged, loud and driven by blood. He chuckles quietly as he shrugs with one of his shoulders, unbothered by his own claim. He no more play with the knife between his fingers, instead he continues to carve a small statue he’s been working on all along. ❝ Is that what you said truly what you believe ? Or is that something you think I’d like to hear. ❞

@fledrmaus, meme, —— " the wolf in you demands blood. "
FOR HE WHO IS EQUALLY BLESSED AND CURSED BY THE GODS SHALL BREAK FREE FROM HIS CHAINS TO DEVOUR EVERYTHING HE RUNS INTO. Boredom sours Ivar’s mood upon returning home. Kattegat lost most of their infamous Shieldmaidens, Vikingr & Drengr, no longer a seat for the Sons of Ragnar. ( The people of Kattegat regard him with suspicion for his past failings. He can not blame them——— HE’S A CONQUERER, not a king or any kind of ruler. ) He smiles, whether to show teeth, his canines sharp, or to answer with amusement, that is yet to be decided. Narrowing his eyes he closely surveys Brynja, who’s giving voice to what he’s been musing about for days already. IVAR IS NOT MADE TO IDLE AND FALL BACK INTO A COMFORTABLE LIFE. ❝ I wonder——— ❞ What do the people of Kattegat accomplish these days ? They trade. They play games. They fight each other over few coins. They betray the true path of a Vikingr upon losing their armring. The most precious jewelry any Vikingr owns. THAT IS ALL HE’S BEEN OBSERVING LATELY. ❝ I have unfinished business with the King of Kings. The Saxons. I want to strengthen our garrison at York. I want to raid these ripe lands. But these people. . . they are a shadow of the true Vikingr and Shieldmaidens who used to fight for Kattegat. They have become lazy and far too comfortable. What value do they have to me ? ❞ He scoffs. Rolling his eyes as he sighs theatrically. ❝ I’ll guess I have to provoke and grip them by their honor. ❞

❝ EVERYONE JUST SEES WHAT YOU APPEAR TO BE——— ❞ She, who has always been privileged by nobility, married to one of the most infamous Viking their culture has seen so far. The queen consort collaborating with her husband’s son from another marriage. Her own sons have many opinions about their mother, and queen, but Ivar finds that Kattegat has become BLIND to what she also represents. These days, THEY MAY HAVE ALL BECOME TOO COMFORTABLE WITH PEACE AND PROSPERITY. Was it not before his mother’s reign, that Kattegat could NEVER truly grow due to constant battles ? ❝ Only few, if any, truly care to experience what and who you are. Why is it that you let them take everything you have given to them for granted, mother ? ❞

SCORN CURLS HOT AND UNSTOPPABLE IN HIS GUTS LIKE A BLAZING FIRESTORM THAT WANTS TO BURN HIM FROM THE INSIDE OUT. & is it not ironic if one considers his devotion to the gods and his belief that fire cleanses the wicked ? is it not wickedness that his own knuckles are bloody & his own eyes ablaze with want for people to be afraid of crossing ( hurting ) him ? ‘ i want to bring them to their knees— head bowed and fists bleeding. i want to make them repent for their betrayal. ’

GIOVANNI // @patronodellearti
FIRE WAS A PRETTY YET DEADLY THING ; it was unpredictable , not necessarily something that could be controlled & yet Giovanni has always felt an affinity with it. Gazing into the flames he finds a kind of peace , a tranquility that he cannot find anywhere else. IVAR’S WORDS TAKE HIM OFF GUARD. What would be the most likely way he’d die? his lips twitch into a smile , a softened look offered towards the other. “What has led you to contemplate death my friend?” SHOULD HE BE WORRIED? he watches the flames flicker , enjoying their warmth. “Murder.” He replies simply. “I think that would be a fair guess for myself.” & NOT A THOUGHT HE ENJOYS. “And you? how do you think you will die?”
WHEN DEATH ALMOST EMBRACED YOU SO MANY TIMES... WHEN IS IT NOT SOMETHING TO BE CONTEMPLATED ? he does not fear to die, he only fears the possibility that he might not be granted access to the halls of valhalla when it’s not a battle taking his life. & in a nauseous wave of melancholy ivar recalls how much his mother feared for his life before. how she has seen him drown after his departure to england. & in a way it’s been her who suffered most to his fate. it has always been a privilege to be a son of ragnar. to be called a prince among their people. but how much have they shunned his mother to keep him alive when so many suggested that death will be more merciful than a life in which he can not be a viking like his brothers will be ? ‘ murder ? i suppose i can relate. i almost was murdered myself and it might be still an option to some. but for what reason would someone choose to murder you ? your family name ? ’ he huffs at the thought. equally not surprised if that were to be the truth as well as disgusted how some grudges will apply to the whole family involved. ‘ i am hoping to die honorably in a mighty battle. the least kind of death i want is to die by illness, or worse, due to my disease. but maybe my mother ends up being right and i will simply drown one day. ’

‘ MY GODS, YOUR HOLY FATHER, WHICHEVER WAY YOU LOOK AT IT, THEY ALL HAVE A CERTAIN HUMOR IN COMMON— ’ ivar’s smile is unrestrained as he tips his head back to laugh, equally mocking as well as unburdened with no tension nor pain to stifle any of his cheer. then, narrowing his focus on heahmund, everything else fades away as he looks him up & down. ‘ it is because of you why i have become the true leader of the great heathen army. ’ it occurs to him, that the bishop has done him a great deed, unbeknownst & certainly with no allegiance in mind, but valuable to ivar nonetheless. who would have thought that after three battles in which he fought tooth & nails to be listened to, it took only one servant of the christian god humiliating his brothers to finally seal what everyone has known already. ‘ maybe it is not just bad luck that you have ended up here, after all, hm ? ’

THEIR OCCUPATION IN YORK HAS SUMMONED MANY VALKYRIES TO ESCORT THEIR BRAVE VIKINGS WHO FELL TO ODIN’S HALLS. & whilst most former inhabitants of york are dead or managed to escape, they have yet to decide what to do with the remaining ones. ( ivar suspects his brothers will suggest to arrange a ransom for them. ) ‘ you, ’ he tests his english tongue, leaning heavily on his crutch as he limps over to an english nurse providing care to her own people. ‘ if we will provide you with anything you need for your work, will you tend to our people, too ? i might add this is a one time offer to save what is left of your people. ’

‘ THE GREAT SEA IS HELD IN PLACE BY JÖRMUNGANDR— the serpent whose giant body encircles it and who keeps his tail in his mouth to complete the circle and stop the waves breaking loose. but one day the god thor was fishing in the sea for the serpent, ’ he drawls with a softened tone for he considers each word wisely, tentative about speaking a tongue he only learned recently. leaning heavily on the crutch, his tilts his head to the side with raised eyebrow & a twinkle of mischief lit in his eyes. they may think of him as a heathen, but ivar has no doubt that these people have not seen many northmen yet. ‘ fighting each other, they were well matched, serpent and god, in that furious fight. are there any tales of the christian god fighting almighty battles ? ’

DIANA BISHOP // @bishopdescendant
𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐃 -cold having crept beneath her skin’s surface. Fingers had turned blue, curses kept lingering on cracked lips. The comfort of warm clothing was difficult to come by, her only means of exchange whatever her husband had gifted her to travel back here Frankish goods, not accepted with much gratitude by most. Diana found herself on her knees, taking in as much of the comforting warmth as she could, hardly even looking up, although an answer already danced on the back of her tongue. ❝ I beg for it to be old age but every day I fear I might not be that lucky. ❞
TO HIM IT NEVER MADE SENSE HOW MUCH PEOPLE SEEM TO FEAR THE PROSPECT OF DEATH— does it not put an end to all the pain, wheres life tends to be much more hurtful at times ? does is not start a new chapter regardless the faith ? in a way, ivar may even be looking forward to it. to see his father again. ( though ivar will also mourn that his mother may have been taken to a different place. ) ‘ i want a glorious death on the battlefield. or maybe provoke someone to challenge me for a duel. ’ despite the glory valhalla promises if he’s to fall in battle, it’d be a lie to say ivar does not bear grudges about death, too. towards those who have ended some lives far too early. ‘ death from exposure seems much more likely in your case. you are not accustomed to northern weather, aren’t you ? imagine going northeast. ’

WITHOUT ANY REAL FORCE OR STRENGTH HE SQUARES HIS SHOULDERS AND HIS FEATURES FRAMES ALL SHADES OF DISHEVELED AS HE SITS UP. & who would blame him for any of these dropping sensations upon realizing that thor’s hammer turned the rough sea against them, tearing through all ships and then— darkness. & even though ivar feels the presence at his side, STRUGGLING TO UNDERSTAND ANYTHING THEY SAY THROUGH THEIR ACCENTS, he tips his head back on the neck to look skyward. ‘ am i the only one you fished from the waters ? ’ he mutters finally, willing himself to remember floki’s lessons to speak & understand foreign languages through the years of mentoring ivar. ‘ maybe an old man with a terrible looking beard and tattoos all around his head ? ’ but if any of the gods still believe in his father, they would have washed him up at the coast of england.

‘ I MIGHT BREAK A BONE, BUT I CAN NEVER BREAK A PROMISE— ’ & it is notable how much it riles him, makes him feel restlessness as he keeps tapping against the metal splint of his leg to pace in short spans. has ragnar not told him to be ruthless ? is lack of understanding what managed to worn down even the most known viking ? ‘ i can never forgive lagertha for killing my mother. why is it so easy for everyone else to forgive, and forget ? ’

‘ NOT THAT I MIND BEING RIGHT, BUT I AM A LITTLE BIT DISAPPOINTED HOW EASILY YOU SAXONS ARE SCARED INTO SUBMISSION— who would have thought you all freeze in terror, allowing us to climb up from the sewers without any struggle or whatsoever ? ’ & the corner of his lips keeps twitching as he leans back against the pillar, loosely folding his hands on his lap & looking right at one of their most recent prisoners with a strong eye contact. it’s a chest - swelling sensation that accompanies his pride in succeeding over the saxons once again, to defeat them despite worst circumstances. ( no food, and trapped with no way out. ) ‘ you are just a foot soldier, right ? any opinion on what your leaders should have done differently ? ’

‘ WE BOTH KNOW THAT NO SELF - RESPECTING MERCENARY OFFERS THEIR ALLEGIANCE WITHOUT A PRICE— QUESTION IS, WHAT IS YOURS ? ’ & cupping an elbow with one hand, ivar taps his own lips with the other, ( hiding his crooked grin, ) and he keeps watching kassandra with an interested glance. when trust & loyalty have become rare goods, WHY WOULD YOU BE ABOVE PAYING FOR ALLEGIANCE ?
