USUALLY PEOPLE USED TO CALL YOU HEARTLESS. Unlike all the other girls in your class, you hadn't even dated yet, and at that stage of your life, you preferred to pay more attention to your studies than to fall in love with some boy your age.
And then you entered your high school phase.
New phase, new school, and consequently new boys. You could say, maybe you had never studied with such handsome guys before, and oh… They definitely seemed to have come straight from paradise.
But among so many faces, there he was, the hockey team player.
Park Sunghoon studied in the same class as you, of course, your conversations never went beyond "hi" or "did you understand this question?" but still, his presence in the same space as you was able to attract your attention.
And consequently, accelerate your heart like never before.
Sometimes you would attend his hockey games, even without understanding any stupid rule there was, or you would be overly polite, always greeting him just to hear his sweet voice. You also laughed at his jokes, even if they were so bad.
So, it didn't take more than a year for you to end up being included in his circle of friends. You would hang out together sometimes, go out in groups for some activities after class, and then even have lunch together on some days.
But of course, there was still an implicit barrier between the two of you, which visibly ruined any chance of "being more than friends".
You wouldn't push it, just pretend everything was fine and secretly continue to fall in love with Sunghoon.
Even though deep down, you knew there would never be a slightest chance with him.
"Well, what do you think of Lee Y/N? I heard she likes you..." Your friend announced proudly, almost as if he were forcing Sunghoon to give an answer to that question. Loud whispers could be heard among the group of friends, and you shifted nervously in place.
"I'm not interested. I mean, she's not my type," he replied at the moment, causing the rest of the friends to respond in a loud chorus of understanding.
That day, you just faked a bitter smile and tried to break the tense atmosphere that had formed, saying words like "we're just friends, this doesn't even make sense" and then fell silent for the rest of the game.
The rest of the week hadn't been pleasant either, apparently all your classmates knew what had happened in that truth or dare game, they cast sympathetic glances, and the closest ones even tried to comfort you by saying that Sunghoon wasn't even that handsome.
But you knew it wasn't true.
The sun shone warmly through the open classroom windows, announcing the arrival of spring. You were alone in the classroom because that day it was your turn to clean the whole environment.
To be honest, there was nothing to complain about. You used to enjoy being alone at times, it was a good time for reflection, even if it was when you were cleaning your classroom.
Light knocks on the door startled you, making you jump before turning towards the source of the sound. There he was, Park Sunghoon, in his school uniform and his backpack slung over one of his shoulders.
"Are you alone here?" He offered a friendly smile, leaving his backpack in a corner of the room.
"My cleaning day..." You replied, wringing out a wet cloth that would later be snatched from your hands by him.
"Let me help," he shrugged, gently taking the towel from your hands to then scrub the classroom desks.
Heavens, your class was definitely unpleasant and disgusting.
Silence fell, there was no need to express verbally, he would know that you were grateful for his help.
"Hm, it's not that I don't like you..." He suddenly started, awkwardly scrubbing a dirty desk while trying to watch you.
You felt strange, as if a glacial cold was sending shivers down your body. Then you nodded vaguely, agreeing with his words.
"Oh, no need to explain..." A bitter smile spread across your face, but you kept pretending everything was fine in front of him.
"I mean, the problem isn't you," he emphasized.
The problem isn't you. Well, that sounded good to your ears, right?
Maybe he just wasn't really excited about getting into relationships. Maybe he just had the same thoughts as your past self before meeting him in the first year, he just wanted to focus on the hockey team and future college spots...
"I'm just not into relationships right now. I think that goes for all the girls..." Sunghoon rambled on for almost ten minutes, but still, you didn't fully pay attention to his words, just nodding along as your brain was hit with various thoughts.
Maybe I have a chance.
He just doesn't want anyone right now.
He just wants to focus on the team.
That doesn't mean I'm not his ideal type.
Later that afternoon, on the same day, you went out after school and went to an ice cream shop. You had great moments, and subconsciously Park planted in your head that maybe you would have a chance.
But all of that was wrong.
The school year began again, now being their last one before finally going to college and starting a new stage in their lives. You were confident in that year, in fact, your grades were still high, and your feelings for Sunghoon still remained.
In a way, you didn't mind anymore, he had already said he wasn't interested in anyone, and consequently that brought false hope for you.
But there was another name alongside that departure. Kim Sooha.
Sooha was beautiful, so incredible that you wondered for days how she could be real. She definitely had the Korean standard, she was so intelligent, but most of all, she was so nice that everyone fell in love with her personality.
And that included Park Sunghoon...
You weren't sure, but it all started during the summer vacation, before classes started. Sooha had a history of figure skating, and she used to give lessons at the ice rink managed by her family. What no one knew was that Sunghoon curiously frequented that same rink, which contributed to both of them starting a brief friendship.
Neither of them knew, but that same year, they curiously ended up in the same class, which further contributed to this bond of friendship growing.
And with that, confused feelings arose in Sunghoon's heart.
For a long time you believed that friends don't lie, but you should have known that at some point Sunghoon would fall in love, even if it wasn't with you.
For months you felt guilty, of course, besides Sooha becoming friends with Sunghoon, she also became friends with you, claiming that the boy often talked about his "good friend" to her.
And that was exactly the problem: because she was your friend, because of this closer proximity with Kim, you simply felt awful for trying to hate her.
Sooha definitely seemed like an angel on earth, she was kind to everyone and would never be able to hurt anyone. You knew that if you told her, the girl wouldn't even be able to get close to Sunghoon and have any kind of romantic relationship with him.
So you let her go.
Over time, the girl was already sighing when the subject was Sunghoon. You knew that the feeling became mutual, and the hockey player intended to take the girl as his date to the winter dance. It didn't take long for rumors to spread throughout the school in December: Sunghoon had asked her to the dance with a grand gesture involving the rest of the team, she had accepted, and consequently declared her love for him.
They became a couple, and all you could do was watch from afar and hope for the couple's happiness...
