I have come to the realization that Myrcella is one of the only members of his family that Tommen isn't a little bit afraid of.

I'm never quite sure who exactly Tommen takes after in personality, because he's so clearly different from both his parents. But he does inherit things from them. He has Jaime's stubbornness ( and occasional obliviousness ) and he has Cersei's anxiety ( though Cersei masks it much better than Tommen does most of the time ). He also has various little quirks inherited from them both, like Jaime's dyslexia and Cersei's sass. It's just that Tommen's overall demeanor of sweetness and gentleness seems so polar opposite from Jaime and Cersei that you really have to pay attention to notice the similarities.

One thing that's very important to my portrayal of Tommen that I'm not sure always gets across: Adult Tommen is just as capable of scheming and manipulation and political power moves as Tywin or Tyrion or Cersei. He just chooses to behave differently because he's naturally an honest and kind person. In a place like Westeros, that wears on him and at time even harms him. But he tries, because he wants to be a good king people can be proud of.

I make a lot of jokes about how much Tommen hates beets but in-context, that line actually makes me very sad because it’s a young child whose entire world has been upturned, who has been told he’s in the most powerful position he knows, but isn’t allowed to actually learn or grow by his hyper-controlling, highkey manipulative mother and the other people around him.Β  And he’s almost sort of lashing out.Β  He’s been controlled so tightly, and he’s, at this point, trying desperately to assert some sort of the authority he’s been told he has, some sort of control over his own life.
