    “Kindness given freely doesn’t exist. At their core, all humans are self, cruel, and greedy. When it comes down to the wire, they’ll save their own skin before helping another. That’s the truth.”

    If Mahito was intimidating, then this man is a hundred times more so. Junpei shifts nervously on his feet, doing his best to meet Geto’s gaze confidently, but dropping his eyes in only seconds. He can’t do it. Whatever sort of boost he got upon gaining the ability to use cursed energy has flown the coop in the presence of a man so much more experienced than he.

    Compared to the man with the relaxed smile and Buddhist robes, Junpei feels like the kid that he still is, instead of the young adult he’s trying so hard to be. It’s impossible for him to tell what Geto might be thinking of. Is he impressed? Disappointed? Does he feel like the teenager is actually worthy of being part of his group? How long until he’s abandoned again?

    A deep breath, let out slowly, and he finds his voice. “It’s...nice to meet you.”

    Something’s been bothering him for a while now. The scene a week ago, at his school, the moment when Mahito placed a hand on his shoulder...there had been something so menacing about it. More than ever before in the curse’s presence, Junpei felt like he was well and truly in mortal danger. If he hadn’t rejected Yuji, hadn’t turned away from someone he was certain would turn away from him first...then what would have happened?

    Would he still be here? Walking just behind Mahito and listening to the other talk? Or would that premonition of death have come true and the curse closed metaphorical teeth around his throat? Would he have met Geto and Jogo and Hanami and the other one...Dagon?

    Would he still be alive?

    “Mahito,” He speaks up when the other man pauses to draw breath---effectively interrupting him. “What exactly...do I mean to you?”

    It’d been a rather absentminded action, his body moving on it’s own during a lull in their conversation. He’s never seen scars like Mahito’s before---except in movies and television shows. There’s almost something cartoonish about their appearance, like bad Halloween makeup; applied by a child trying their best to be scary.

    Junpei didn’t really realize what he was doing until the curse spoke up, snapping back to reality and withdrawing his hand like he’d been burned. “S-sorry!” His apology comes out stuttered, face flushing with heat. No matter how curious he was, that’s no excuse to reach out and touch someone’s scars! He would hate if someone did that to his own.

    “I just...I-I’ve never seen someone with scars like this. Not in real life.” The excuse sounds lame to his own ears, how must it sound to Mahito? The human is very well aware that his position is precarious now; he feels like he’s walking on a tightrope between worlds. Sometimes, he remembers Yuji’s offer to join the school...but had ultimately rejected him and gone with Mahito instead.

    What would a place like that have to offer someone like him? More rules, more teachers who think they know everything, probably more bullies to pick on him...Yuji would have grown tired of him eventually---everyone does.

    How long until Mahito and Geto reach that point as well?
