nova..... hates orlais more than one might expect.  especially being at halamshiral. not only is it over stimulating, and she has to be stiff and prim and can't be herself and she has so many people insulting her but there's also... she distinctly does not fit in and it's worse because this was supposed to be their home. this was the end of the journey. halamshiral.  she refuses to call it the winter palace. calls it halamshiral the entire time out of spite. enunciates it with grit teeth and narrowed flashing cat eyes. only time she accentuates her elvhen features bc she hates her features but she's going to piss off every noble there and remind them that she is an elf and she will not be erased

A LITTLE BIT O’ MAGIC

it was so warm and pretty. nuva loved the way the light hit the leaves and made everything so green green green! everything was green and and and brown and she really doesn't mean to wander off. it makes mama scared when she wanders off, because there are big scary tent pilers (and she doesn't know what a tent is (is that like a aravel?) or why it's so bad that they're piling on them but mama says they look like flaming swords and now she has an image of a scary flaming sword piling onto a aravel and that doesn't seem scary at all. except maybe the fire.) out there that will come and hurt her if she goes too far. still, she wanders, picking up the pretty flowers for her mama as she goes because maybe that will make her mama not so scared? the world can’t be scary and the big tent pilers can’t hurt her if she has pretty flowers, right? 

it takes her a moment, so focused on flowers, to recognise the scared chirping of the birdie in front of her and her little heart aches for the scared thing. as young as she is, even she can tell that its hurt and that it can't get away. nuva doesn't like that. it's not fair (and she should know, because her mama was teaching her what fair meant! and nuva was a very good learner!) that the other birdies could fly and this one couldn't and so she makes her mind up to help the birdie, even though she doesn't know how.

and it's funny. she doesn't really understand what's happening, but she can feel that ticklish feeling in her mind again and it makes her giggle as she carefully (careful careful! aunt ghilly was teaching her to be careful with the babies! just like she was careful careful with the halla! aunt ghilly told her she was very very good at being careful careful!) picks up the hurt birdie. and that ticklish feeling grows and spreads through her head and down to her fingers as she tries to find a way to make the owie go away! and decides that a kiss will work! because that's what mama does and it always makes the owies go away. so she does just that, placing a (careful careful!) kiss on the birdie's hurt wing.

it doesn't even register with her, as the bird flies overhead and she wanders off with a happy song, that healing birds was not a normal thing to do.

also another headcanon based off that drabble: though her “aunt ghilly” (ghillanna, the halla keeper) was really saying “careful! careful!” when telling nova to be careful, as she always needed to be told twice, telling someone to be “careful careful” has always kind of... stuck with her. when she’s not paying attention to her words, if someone’s off to do something dangerous or is currently doing something dangerous, she’ll just go “be careful careful!” or even simply “careful careful!”

i feel like i ramble a lot on nova's relationship with thomas but like... it was her first relationship and since it was when she was 14 it did some major damage on how she views love and relationships, as well as her relationship to her body. thomas was the first person to view her in a sexual light, because to her clan she was still a child. she wouldn't receive a vallaslin for another three years. having the attention of someone older than her (three or four, so not much older but still in a whole other stage developmentally) was.... more than she could ever have asked for, honestly.

and so she fell in love, because she was a naive fourteen year old girl who barely knew anything of the world. and he would ask her to hide her ears, or make comments about her body. she had already developed physically, had begun puberty at twelve, but it still wasn't enough and it never would be enough because that simply wasn't how her body was. she would never be curvy she'd always be thin with slim hips and arms and legs. she'd always have those big freaky cat eyes and pointed ears and scars all over her face. she couldn't do anything to change that and him constantly commenting on them were really damaging to her

a lot of her issues with not feeling sexy or attractive, her issues with her elvhen features, all stem from that. basically the only things she likes about her appearance is her hair, her vallaslin, and her smile. her body, even as a twenty-seven year old, feels too childlike because she just can't have the same curves as a human would

she'll never look "womanly" or "full figured" and to her, that's what's sexy. hell, it didn't help that she caught thomas cheating on her with a woman his age with that sort of body type. so she alwyas feels not good enough, not human enough and it's funny because she loves her culture and being an elf, but she doesn't like looking like one

ways to tell when nova is feeling particularly anxious:

she’ll often touch her wrist in some way. could be a simple touch if it’s just a brief spike of anxiety. more often than not though she’ll start scratching, picking or digging her nails into her wrist in some sort of weird way of calming down.

if she’s reminded of specific past events, she might touch a hand to her throat or the back of her head.

she already makes herself appear smaller naturally, but she’ll curl her shoulders in farther and try to appear as non-threatening and small as possible instinctively.

she often keeps her back against the wall, usually in corners to give the illusion that the room is bigger than it is -- that, and she can see all the exits if she needs to make a quick escape.

when her anxiety is peaking sparks or ice crystals might form at her finger tips, but she’ll usually have enough sense to stifle them and push them down. if she’s startled in that state, however, she’ll wind up igniting a barrier around herself without entirely meaning to. usually though this is when she feels like she’s under attack. she narrowly avoids doing this at the winter palace.

nova winds up having at least one panic attack during the WEWH quest, and most of it is caused by her having adhd and experiencing emotional hyperarousal. there's so much going on around her all at once, she's in a situation where she's expected to control every single thing she does and on top of that she's in a very high stress situation where somebody could die if she doesn't figure out what's happening. add to that that there are most likely people commenting on her being an elf (and probably those that try to touch her tattoos or ears or whatever have you) and she winds up very overwhelmed and feeling completely out of control and has to excuse herself somewhere private just so she can break down without embarrassing the inquisition in the process.

So although I've mentioned that nova likely shouldn't be left alone to cook unless she's actually focused on it (lest she burn it all) there's one thing she knows well: peasant/fry bread. Her dad taught it to her when she was young and tho it took time for her to nail it, she might slip into the kitchens to bake herself some when she's feeling sad and homesick.

nova has a fear of asphyxiation/being unable to breathe. it’s not something she’s actively realised, because it’s not an experience one feels often and it’s not like she lets anyone except lovers near her throat, but yeah. she definitely panics

nova, in general, is a highly emotional person. if she’s excited, in love, or mad you’ll damned well know. when she’s hurting, scared or upset, however, she’ll often retreat and try to hide it. this is because she often feels like she has to be the one to keep everyone together. she can’t be breaking down when she’s the shoulder to cry on and she doesn’t want to burden anyone with her issues. still, more often than not you’ll still be able to tell pretty easily -- a nova that secludes herself or in general isn’t running around skyhold/haven like a chicken that lost it’s head is a nova to be concerned about. especially if she doesn’t leave her room or has decided to sit on top of the stable roofing in skyhold because people are generally afraid it will break, and thus they’ll leave her alone.
