The comparison literally no one asked for but I have strong feelings about anyways. Honestly, the short version of it is that White House Down is almost exactly Die Hard but in the White House and I love Die Hard. And, ultimately, I think Olympus Has Fallen takes itself too seriously.

Heroes

So, White House Down is similar to Die Hard in that they both have ‘non-heroic’ hero, a head villain who employs both a hacker and muscles and machine guns, and fraught with family issues. John Cale (Channing Tatum) is not anyone’s pick to protect the President: in his interview with Special Agent Carol Finnerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal) it is revealed that while he accomplished a heroic act while on duty, he does not respect authority nor does he have commitment to see things through. But, much like John McClane, he is thrust into being the hero by virtue of being in the right place at the right time where no on else is willing to step up and do the job that needs to be done. They both have something to prove to authority figures and to their family. They are both flawed heroes with a propensity for sarcastic humor and they are all the more human for it.

Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) on the other hand, is well-respected by the President (Aaron Eckhart) and is only taken off his detail because of a freak traumatic car accident. When the villains attack, Banning rushes to the rescue both because of his patriotic duty and his close personal relationship with the President.

While these may seem like small differences between the protagonists, they make all the difference. Cale is the reluctant hero, the ‘I have to do this because nobody else will’. Banning is the traditional heroic figure, there is something within him that drives him to feats of heroism and it’s a calling that he has to listen to. In this instance, Cale is the more relatable hero as he is a man who has had his shortcomings but still tries to do the right thing despite it. Banning comes off as the unattainable righteous man, who could compare themselves to that?

Villains

White House Down features a militia of white supremacists lead by Head of Presidential Detail Martin Walker (James Woods) breaking into a White House with a black president. Olympus Has Fallen features villains from North Korea, lead by members of the South Korean diplomatic party and a former secret security agent, infiltrating the White House with a white president. White House Down suggests that the greatest threats we face are internal, that it is our own citizens who pose the greatest threat. Olympus Has Fallen suggests that it is our oversees enemies who seek to infiltrate and destabilize American security. I thought these were both good threats, relevant to their contemporary geopolitical anxieties. However, in this case, I think the stronger narrative and emotional relationships stem from an internal betrayal rather than the external threat.

In great external threat narrative devices, they work because people come together in strong opposition to this threat. In this instance, where the people are fragmented and isolated, they only come together over their communications, not bonding in a physical way. In Die Hard, this relationship between McClane and Al Powell (Reginald VelJohnson) works very well but perhaps this is also because they are united against an inept Deputy Police Chief (Paul Gleason) who doesn’t seem to understand what’s at stake here. In Olympus Has Fallen, we do not see this same camaraderie over the communication lines. And, as such, I think that the internal threat betrayal works better in White House Down because they are isolated from each other but we see different groups of people all coming together to fight this common enemy. These groups are also all linked personally to Cale: Finnerty through their personal history and the Speaker of the House because Cale saved his nephew’s life. There’s a common thread here that ties these isolated groups all together that works nicely.

Miscellaneous

Briefly, I want to point out a very clear parallel between Die Hard and White House Down in the hacker’s first big scene.

On the left, Theo (Clarence Gilyard) hacks to the tune of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor op. 125. On the right, Skip Tyler (Jimmi Simpson) hacks the defenses with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor. I thought this was a nice nod to Die Hard and invited the two films to be compared. (Not to mention the case of mistaken identity on the roof where both Cale and McClane were thought to be terrorists and shot at). (Oh yeah, and how both villains connect Cale and McClane to their families and use them as leverage).

Also, what I believe is a huge difference between Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down is the character of Emily Cale (Joey King), Cale’s daughter.

She is a young political journalist with an active YouTube channel through which she broadcasts the identities of the terrorists. She is smart as hell, knowing everything about the White House and keeping up to date with politics, and brave AF, facing down the terrorist with a gun to her head. Lastly, they do not make fun of her “nerdy” flag-waving! In fact, it is the final redemption on the White House lawn, convincing the air strike to call off their attack. She helps save the day and White House Down is all the stronger for it.

In sum, I think Olympus Has Fallen is not as conducive to connections between its characters and the audience as White House Down is. It’s hard to connect to near-flawless feats of traditional heroism as compared to the ‘trying your best’ brand of heroism from Cale and McClane. So yeah, White House Down has a special place in my heart and Emily Cale’s flag waving inevitably makes me cry every time.

the storm raging the way it does outside only matches the feeling in leon’s heart. anger. frustration. the only thing stopping him is his own determination. failure isn’t an option, it never has been. it’s the one thing that keeps him from stopping. and there the lord is, trying to pry the sensation from the agent as if he ever would. they’re both aware that the blonde is headstrong. that nothing will stop him. the determination he harbors will send him directly into the ground. it’ll be his demise, be it now or much later in his life.

mentally, leon’s counting his bullets. he has ten in play, and blue eyes are just watching carefully. “ pretty sure your definition of mercy and mine are vastly different than each other, “ he points out, eyes narrowing as he just watches the lord -- looking for an opening that might only be a second long.. eye contact is made once again and the frustration that leon harbors is abhorrent. 

“ mercy isn’t using everyone as puppets with parasites, for the record. “ unsure if he has another chance, he shoots two bullets directly behind him into a crippling pillar to at least try to distract so he could make the move to lunge out of the situation. this was a distraction to keep leon even further from wherever they were keeping ashley.

he’s had many a history with jack krauser. so much to the point where leon is a little tired of their cat and mouse game. except cat and mouse turns into ‘dead’ or ‘not dead’. he can’t believe that he used to be on the same team as jack -- someone who captured ashley all for this god damn cult.

there’s a moment where leon’s not positive if he really wants to know more about luis. but at the same time, while there’s still questions in the air that leon needs answers to and @plagaslost​ maybe is the only one that might actually be able to answer them without just yelling and attacking him. there’s an air of uncertainty. the last time leon trusted someone he didn’t know entirely, he had gotten backstabbed pretty badly. what was stopping this pretty boy from doing the same god damn thing?

there’s so much that this simple rescue mission threw at him and he doesn’t fucking understand any of it.  “ so you’re telling me that the plaga is just something native from here? “ he asks, almost not believing that a parasite could cause all of this.   “ i need more details here. if put in the wrong hands, this could be devastating in a global way, luis. “ he figures that the doctor might have a bit more information considering he was apart of this whole operation.
