[Full Interview] BANG JUNG YOO MOON - Singles Korea October 2024 Issue

The concept for this photoshoot began with the keyword ‘departure.’ It all started with a comment from Youngjae on a post uploaded by an editor who cares for the four of them on the Singles Instagram.

Youngjae: “I felt that the post was written by someone who knows us well. Just looking at the post, you could see the affection. So, I left a comment half out of gratitude and half as a joke, but I wrote it hoping they would invite us (laughs).”

Daehyun: “In fact, we had thought during this activity period that we would like to do a photoshoot at least once. It would become a memory for both us and our fans. However, due to various circumstances, it was difficult to proceed. So, I feel that this photoshoot with Singles was a destined opportunity.”

How are you spending your time these days?

Daehyun: “I’m enjoying our activities (laughs). Recently, I stayed in Japan for about 10 days, meeting fans, and I just returned to Korea. So, I’m resting and preparing for concerts again.”

Jongup: “I’ve now started preparing my solo album, which I had put off for a while. According to my plans, it should have already been released, but group activities took priority.”

Yongguk: “I’m happy to be working with the members after such a long time, and I worked hard. After finishing the photoshoot, we have a fan signing event scheduled.”

Youngjae: “Recently, I’ve been preparing for the musical '부치하난,' and by the time this photoshoot comes out, the drama 'Our Beautiful Summer' is expected to be aired.”

Since this is your first activity together in a while, there are likely many fans who have become successful and are showing up in front of the four of you, just like the editor from Singles who previously made a video. Do you have any memorable episodes?

Yongguk: “In the past, many fans introduced themselves as students, but now there are fans who have become proper business owners. I remember when they used to gift us red ginseng jelly as kids, and now they come back proudly bringing us red ginseng as working adults.”

Daehyun: “Although I’m not a 성덕, while doing this music broadcast, I met staff members who used to work with us back then. They were at entry-level positions at that time, but now they’ve moved up in their careers. Because of that, I felt that they put a lot of effort into preparing our stage, which allowed us to successfully complete this music broadcast.”

Youngjae: “Whenever I go to acting jobs, there’s always at least one person I recognize (laughs). There are also people on set who greet us, saying they liked us, and some of the team members I worked with bought tickets to come to our performance. I’m so grateful every time I receive such greetings.”

Jong-up: “I heard that Lee Chaeyeon was also a fan of ours. She came to our concert and supported us enthusiastically at the venue, which surprised me and made me grateful. It’s fascinating and feels different to see someone who liked us become a singer and actively be loved while engaging in their own activities. The fact that the time we spent working became a dream for someone is quite special.”

It’s been seven years since you’ve worked together. Do you remember the day you decided to gather again and reach that starting line? I heard Jongup brought it up first.

Jongup: “Even when we weren’t actively working together, we would often meet, and that topic would come up every time. It wasn’t a decision made in a single moment. However, when it came time to execute specific plans, I first asked Youngjae. The reason was that Youngjae had to prepare for activities right after his military discharge. He might have had his own plans after coming back, so his willingness was the most important (laughs). I seized the opportunity during his leave to ask him. Fortunately, he immediately agreed and said he could jump right in, so I discussed it with the other members. Everyone seemed to share the same feelings, making the process smooth.”

How does Youngjae remember that day?

Youngjae: “Jongup had been expressing his desire to regroup, release an album, and start activities for a long time. We all had the mindset of wanting to do it, but Jongup was always strongly saying, ‘I really hope we can release an album.’ Those discussions continued until Jongup came forward with a specific plan for the album. He said that if the older members were on board, he would talk more about it. We all agreed, and we really ended up gathering to release an album (laughs).”

If this album had been released seven years ago, what kind of album would it have been?

Yongguk: “If it had been released back then, it would have been too sad. Instead, now that the Curtain Call album is out, I feel like we can alleviate some of that sadness. It’s an album that reminisces about that time and fills it with happy memories.”

When you think back to your previous activities, what stands out the most?

Yongguk: “When we had meetings about album concepts, we used to just throw ideas around (laughs). But it was surprising that the company approved those concepts. There were moments when I thought to myself, ‘Why did they allow this?’ The albums like 'BADMAN' and 'ONE SHOT' had that feeling—it was quite intriguing.”

Youngjae: “At that time, we were really immersed in that, and we thought that to survive in this tough environment, we had to show different sides of ourselves. We didn’t need to be the same as everyone else. That’s why we went more extreme.”

Yongguk: “Looking back now, it really was extreme (laughs).”

Jongup: “Except for the choreography of 'BADMAN,' it was all fine… (laughs).”

Youngjae: “At that time, it felt like we were ahead of our time, but we were very satisfied. However, the fans didn’t seem to like it.”

Daehyun: “I think it was because we kept coming out with dark makeup on our faces (laughs).”

Now you’re active with fifth-generation idols. A lot has changed compared to that time. Was there anything that surprised you during your recent activities?

Youngjae: “I wanted to try a photo frame with phototism, and we managed to do it (laughs). I was really looking forward to it, but the shoot ended more quickly than I expected, which was a bit disappointing. I plan to definitely take a picture with it before the period ends as a keepsake.”

Jongup: “You might not know this, but (laughs) I’ve been steadily active and have experienced all of this. Even so, it’s fascinating to see what the older members are doing.”

If there’s something you’d like to do with your fans in the future, could you give us a little spoiler?

Daehyun: “Unfortunately, aside from the already scheduled events, nothing has been confirmed yet. However, everyone is expressing a desire for an encore performance, so it seems to be heading in that direction.”

Youngjae: “What I really want to do with the fans is perform. As fans might know (laughs), when we have concerts, our comments are really short, and we fill the entire time with songs from start to finish. We did manage to perform quite a few songs this time, but I still feel thirsty for more. So, I want to add even more songs to our next performance and run around with the fans.”

Jongup: “I also want to perform, but I think it would be special if we could perform at the place where we debuted, like at the Jangchung Gymnasium where our debut showcase was held. Whenever I recall that time, it feels vivid. So, I want to face the fans there at least once. It’s the place of our first meeting, after all.”

Yongguk: “I do volunteer work at the end of every year, and I think it would be a great support if the fans could join us (laughs). It would be nice if all the members could participate together. I’ve had a few good memories doing that with fans before.”

Finally, now that you’ve reached a new starting line, is there anything you’d like to convey to your fans?

Youngjae: “I hope this photoshoot becomes a good gift for the fans, just as it was a special time for us. I want to express my gratitude once again for this activity, which I keep mentioning. We will work hard to repay the love we’ve received, so I hope you won’t forget us and continue to send us warm love (laughs). I also want to say that we will truly visit you with smiling faces, so I hope you won’t feel too sad.”

Yongguk: “I’m really enjoying working with the members lately, and I’m grateful to the fans, but I’m even more thankful to the younger members. In fact, each of us has a lot to do individually, and it’s been a hectic situation. Youngjae had his drama and musical, and Jongup and Daehyun had to prepare their solo albums. Still, I want to express my gratitude to the members who have been together through it all, and I hope all the activities the members are doing go well, and I’ll always support them (laughs).”

Daehyun: “I think that by releasing this album with the members, we’ve found a new direction and path. It has helped me regain the things I had lost and rekindled my love for music. In a way, it’s ultimately thanks to the fans. Now that we’re back, I see it as a fresh start, so I want to share good music with you for a long time.”

Jongup: “After seven years, I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for the fans during the time we weren’t together. I’m sure some may have felt anxious that we might not reunite. However, now that we’re showing our activities together, I feel that a deeper trust has developed between us and the fans. Even if it’s not visible, there’s a belief that we can still be together. We were fortunate that many fans attended our recent performance, which strengthened our trust in them. Going forward, I hope you wait with excitement rather than anxiety. We will always be here, so I hope you continue to enjoy our music with a good heart. Lastly, I hope you’ll support my solo album as well (laughs).”

🎤 Singles Korea: 방용국, 정대현, 유영재, 문종업의 새로운 출발선

이번 화보의 콘셉트는 ‘출발’이라는 키워드에서 시작했다. 섭외도 네 사람을 애정하는 에디터가 〈싱글즈〉 인스타그램에 업로드한 게시물에 남긴 영재의 댓글에서 출발했고. 영재 저희를 잘 아시는 분이 작성한 게시물이라는 생각이 들었다. 게시물만 봐도 애정이 보였거든. 그래서 감사한 마음 반, 농담 반으로 댓글을 달았다. 그렇지만 불러주셨으면 좋겠다는 마음으로 적었다.(웃음) 대현 사실 우리도 이번 활동 기간 동안 화보 ��영을 한 번은 했으면 좋겠다는 생각을 했었다. 팬분들에게도 저희에게도 추억이 될 것 같아서. 그런데 여러 여건상 진행이 어려웠는데, 이번 〈싱글즈〉 화보는 촬영할 수 있게 되어서 인연이라는 생각이 든다.

요즘 어떻게 보내고 있는지. 대현 즐거운 마음으로 활동하고 있다.(웃음) 최근에는 일본에 10일 정도 체류하면서 팬분들을 만났고, 한국에 들어온 지는 얼마 안 됐다. 그래서 휴식을 취하면서 다시 콘서트를 준비하고 있다. 종업 저는 이제 잠시 미뤄두었던 솔로 앨범 준비를 시작했다. 계획상으로는 이미 나왔어야 하는 앨범인데, 단체 활동을 진행하는 것이 우선이었다. 용국 오랜만에 멤버들과 함께하는 활동이라 행복하게 또 열심히 했다. 화보 촬영을 마치고는 팬사인회 일정이 예정되어 있다. 영재 최근에는 뮤지컬 〈부치하난〉 공연을 준비하고 있고,아마 이 화보가 나갈 즈음이면 이미 방송이 되었을 텐데, 드라마 〈아름다운 우리 여름〉이 공개될 예정이다.

오랜만에 함께하는 활동이다 보니 성덕(성공한 팬)이 되어 네 사람 앞에 나타나는 팬들도 많을 듯하다. 앞서 영상을 진행했던 〈싱글즈〉 에디터처럼 말이다. 혹시 기억나는 에피소드가 있는지. 용국 예전에는 학��이라고 자신을 소개하던 팬이 많았는데, 이제는 어엿한 사장님이 된 팬도 있다. 또 어릴 때는 홍삼 젤리를 선물했는데, 이제는 직장인이 되어 홍삼을 가지고 왔다며 의기양양하게 선물을 주시던 얼굴이 떠오른다. 대현 성덕까지는 아니지만 이번 음악 방송을 하면서 예전에 활동할 때 근무하시던 직원분들을 다시 만났다. 그분들도 그때는 막 내의 위치에 계셨는데, 연차가 쌓이면서 지금은 더 높은 위치에 계시더라. 그래서인지 저희의 무대를 엄청 공들여서 준비해주셨다는 것이 느껴졌다. 그래서 이번 음악방송을 성공적으로 마칠 수 있었다. 영재 저는 연기 작업을 하러 가면 꼭 한 분은 계셨다.(웃음) 현장에서 저희를 좋아했다고 인사를 건네는 분들도 있었고, 이번 저희 공연에도 저와 작업했던 팀 분들이 직접 티켓을 구매해서 현장에 찾아와주셨다. 이런 인사를 받을 때마다 너무 감사하다. 종업 이채연 님도 저희의 팬이셨다고 하더라. 저희 콘서트에도 와주셨고, 현장에서 응원도 되게 열심히 해주셔서 조금 놀라고 감사했다. 저희를 좋아해주셨던 분이 또 가수가 되어서 활발하게 활동하시고 또 사랑받는 모습을 보면서 신기하기도 했고 색다른 기분이었다. 우리가 활동했던 그 시간들이 누군가에게 꿈이 되었다는 사실이.

7년 여 만에 함께하는 활동이다. 이렇게 다시 모이기로 결정한 그 출발선이 된 날을 혹시 기억하나. 종업 씨가 먼저 이야기를 꺼냈다고 들었다. 종업 함께 활동하지 않았을 때도 종종 모임을 가졌는데 만날 때마다 꺼낸 이야기다. 어느 한순간에 결정한 건 아니다. 그런데 구체적으로 계획을 가지고 실행해야 했던 시점에는 영재 형에게 가�� 먼저 물어봤다. 이유는 영재 형이 전역하자마자 활동 준비를 했어야 했기 때문이다. 전역을 하고 본인의 계획이 있을 수도 있으니 말이다. 그래서 형의 의사가 가장 중요했다.(웃음) 휴가 나온 틈을 타 형에게 물어봤다. 그런데 형이 정말 흔쾌하게 바로 달릴 수 있다고, 좋다고 말해서 다른 형들과도 이야기를 나눴다. 모두 같은 마음으로 함께해주어 순조롭게 진행된 듯하다.

영재 씨는 그날을 어떻게 기억하나? 영재 다시 모여서 앨범을 내고, 활동을 하고 싶다는 이야기는 종업이가 긴 시간에 걸쳐 꺼냈다. 우리 모두가 ‘해야지, 해야지’ 하는 마음을 가지고는 있었지만, 종업이는 항상 “진짜 앨범을 냈으면 좋겠어요”라고 강력하게 이야기하는 편이었다. 그런 이야기가 종종 나오다가 종업이가 앨범에 대해 구체적인 계획을 들고 나타났다. 이렇게 해서 진행을 하고싶은데 형들만 의지가 있다면, 제가 조금 더 이야기를 해보겠다면서. 저희는 모두 좋다고 했고, 정말 모여서 앨범을 냈다.(웃음)

그렇다면 7년 전에 이 앨범이 나왔더라면 어떤 앨범이었을까? 용국 그때 발매되었더라면 너무 슬펐을 것 같다. 오히려 시간이 지난 뒤 지금 커튼콜 앨범이 나와서 슬픔은 덜어낼 수 있었다. 그때를 추억하고 또 행복한 기억으로 채운 앨범이다.

예전에 활동했을 당시를 떠올리면 가장 기억에 남는 것은 무엇인가? 용국 우리가 앨범 콘셉트에 대해 회의를 할 때는 그냥 막 던지는(?) 편이다. 그런데 그 콘셉트를 회사에서 컨펌한 것이 신기했다. 속으로는 ‘왜 이런 걸 허락하지?’ 했던 것들도 있었다. 〈BADMAN〉 앨범도 그렇고, 〈ONE SHOT〉 앨범도 그랬고 좀 신기했다. 영재 그때는 우리도 그런 것에 심취해 있었고, 그 시절의 우리는 이 험난한 곳에서 살아남으려면 다른 모습을 보여줘야 한다고 생각했던 것 같다. 우리까지 똑같을 필요는 없다고. 그래서 더 극으로 갔던 것 같다. 용국 지금 다시 보니까 정말 극으로 가긴 했더라.(웃음) 종업 〈BADMAN〉 안무 빼고 괜찮았는데…(웃음) 영재 그때 너무 앞서나간 느낌이 없지 않지만 우리끼리는 굉장히 만족했다. 근데 팬분들은 좋아하지 않으셨다. 대현 자꾸 얼굴에 시커먼 거 칠하고 나와서 그랬던 것 같다.(웃음)

이제는 5세대 아이돌과 함께 활동하고 있다. 그 시절과 비교하면 많은 것이 바뀌었다. 최근 활동하면서 가장 놀랐던 부분이 있나? 영재 포토이즘 프레임을 한번 해보고 싶었는데 그걸 이뤘다.(웃음) 되게 기대를 하고 갔는 생각보다 빠르게 촬영이 끝나서 조금 아쉬웠다. 기념으로 기간이 끝나기 전에 꼭 나와 함께 사진을 찍어볼 예정이다. 종업 잘 모르시겠지만(웃음) 나는 꾸준히 활동하면서 다 경험해본 것이다. 그런데도 형들이 하는 것을 보면 신기하다.

앞으로 팬들과 함께하고 싶은 것이 있다면? 공개할 수 있는 선에서 살짝 스포일러를 부탁한다. 대현 아쉽게도 이미 정해진 일정 외에는 아직 확정된 것은 없다. 그렇지만 앙코르 공연을 했으면 좋겠다고 모두들 이야기해주시니 그 방향으로 흘러가는 분위기다. 영재 팬들과 함께하고 싶은 건 역시 공연이다. 팬분들도 아시겠지만(웃음) 우리가 콘서트를 할 때 멘트가 정말 짧고, 처음부터 끝까지 곡으로 때려 넣는(?) 스타일이다. 이번 공연도 저희가 꽤 많은 곡을 소화하긴 했지만 여전히 목마르다. 그래서 다음 번 공연에는 곡을 더 많이 추가해서 더 달리고 싶다. 팬분들과 뛰놀고 싶다. 종업 저도 공연이긴 한데, 좀 색다르게 저희가 데뷔했던 곳에서 공연을 하면 ‘좀더 특별한 시간이 되지 않을까’ 하는 생각이다. 데뷔 쇼케이스를 한 장충체육관에서 말이다. 여전히 그때를 떠올리면 생생한 느낌이다. 그래서 한 번쯤은 거기서 팬분들과 마주하고 싶다. 첫 만남의 장소이지 않나. 용국 저는 연말 마다 봉사활동을 하는데 팬분들이 와주시면 큰 힘이 될 것 같다.(웃음) 멤버들도 다 함께하면 좋겠다. 예전에 몇 번 팬들과 함께했었는데 좋은 기억으로 남아 있거든.

마지막으로 새로운 출발선에 섰다. 팬들에게 전하고픈 이야기가 있다면? 영재 이 화보가 팬분들에게도 좋은 선물이 됐으면 좋겠다. 우리에게도 그런 시간이었으니. 그리고 이번 활동은 계속 얘기하는 거지만 너무 감사한 활동이어서 감사하다는 말씀을 다시 한번 전하고 싶다.이렇게 받은 사랑을 보답할 수 있도록 열심히 저희가 노력할 테니까 앞으로도 저희를 잊지 않고 은은한 사랑을 보내주셨으면 좋겠다.(웃음) 또 웃는 얼굴로 진짜 찾아뵐 거니까 너무 슬퍼하지 않으셨으면 좋겠다는 말도 전하고 싶다. 용국 요즘 멤버들과 함께 일하고 있어서 너무 즐겁고, 팬분들에게도 고맙지만, 동생들한테 더 고맙다. 사실 개개인이 해야 하는 것도 많고 여유가 없는 상황이 었다. 영재는 드라마와 뮤지컬이 있었고, 종업이와 대현이도 솔로 앨범을 준비해야 했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 함께해준 멤버들에게 고맙다는 말을 하고 싶고, 멤버들이 하는 모든 활동이 잘되길 바라고 항상 응원할 것이다.(웃음) 대현 이번에 멤버들과 함께 앨범을 발매함으로써 새로운 방향성과 길이 생겼다고 생각한다. 제가 잃어버렸던 것들을 되찾고, 다시 음악을 사랑하는 계기가 됐다. 어떻게 보면 결국에는 팬 여러분 덕분이다. 이제 다시 시작이라고 봐도 무난하기 때문에 앞으로 긴 시간 동안 좋은 음악 들려드리고 싶다. 종업 7년이라는 시간 동안 저희가 감히 상상하긴 어렵지만, 함께하지 못한 것에 대해 팬분들께서 많이 힘들었을 거라는 생각이 든다. 그중에는 다시 함께할 수 없다는 불안함도 있으셨을 거다. 그렇지만 우리가 이렇게 모여서 활동하는 모습을 보여드렸으니 저희와 팬들 간의 조금 더 깊은 신뢰가 생긴 것 같다. 보이지 않아도 또 함께할 수 있다는 믿음. 저희도 이번에 공연에 많은 분들이 와주셔서 팬들에 대한 신뢰가 생겼고 그래서 다행이라는 생각이 든다. 앞으로는 불안함을 갖고 기다리기보다는 설레는 마음으로 기다려주셨으면 좋겠다. 우리는 항상 존재하니까 앞으로도 좋은 마음으로 즐기시기를 바란다. 마지막으로 저의 솔로 앨범 도 많이 응원해주셨으면 좋겠다.(웃음)
