arin wasn’t exactly sure what had occurred when the clock struck midnight, but he felt an uncharacteristic pull toward the dark. both metaphorically and physically. instead of seeking out his father or heading back to his apartment, he lingered in the shadows outside of the town hall. his hand hovered over the hilt of his fake lightsaber as he heard the sound of approaching footsteps. eyes narrowing as he pressed the activator, and unexpectedly a real beam of red light shot out. he blinked a few times in surprise before turning toward the source of the footsteps, lightsaber pointed at them. “what do you want from me? i would choose your answer carefully.”

a gentle sigh fell from arin’s lips as he forced his gaze upward to meet his father’s, previously avoiding looking directly at the other out of shame. going out of his way to confide in anyone had always been a challenge for arin, even with someone who he knew was always there rooting for him. “i wonder where i inherited that stubbornness from.” there was a playfulness in his tone, classic deflection on arin’s part. he took in a deep breath before wetting his lips, “i just… it’s hard.” he failed to elaborate as he hid his face in his hands, allowing him to succumb to the negative emotions that had been eating away at him for the past few days or so. “i never want to burden anyone by asking for help, especially not you. you’ve done so much for me already in life. i doubt taking care of someone else’s kid was ever in your plans despite agreeing to do it.” he blinked a few times, forcing the urge to allow his tears to build away. “i think as an adult all you want to do is make your parents proud, so how can i do that if i’m constantly relying on you?”
