westview   new   jersey   isn’t   that   far   from   new   york   city   ,   but   it   seems   colder   than   the   city   ever   cold   .   maybe   it’s   the   lack   of   tall   buildings   to   keep   the   city’s   sidewalks   warm   .   a   shiver   runs   through   peggy   as   she   stands   in   the   doorway   of   wanda’s   home   .   things   between   them   are   still   new   ,   as   the   christmas   tree   in   the   corner   of   the   room   signifies   ,   but   peggy   already   doesn’t   want   to   go   home   to   the   city   .   there’s   nothing   there   for   her   anymore   .   she’s   certain   she   could   find   work   in   this   town   ,   perhaps   with   the   activism   wanda   does   or   opening   her   own   firm   .   

red   lips   form   into   a   small   smile   as   she   sheds   her   snow   covered   coat   .   “   the   city   is   only   a   two   hours   away   ,   but   i   don’t   believe   it’s   ever   been   this   cold   there   .”   once   the   brown   fabric   is   hanging   off   the   rack   ,   she   crossing   over   to   where   wanda   sits   on   the   couch   .   legs   get   thrown   across   her   lap   ,   cuddling   in   close   to   the   red   head   .   “   you   look   rather   cozy   here   .   i’m   certain   you’ll   have   no   problem   warming   me   up   .”

when   she   first   brought   peter   home,   peggy   was   used   to   the   sound   of   his   screams   in   the   middle   of   the   night   .   but   it’s   been   five   years   and   the   night   terrors   have   nearly   stopped   .   at   least,   she   thought   they   did   .   until   she   was   awoken   by   screaming   once   again   .   she   throws   off   the   covers   ,   pulls   one   of   steve’s   t-shirts   and   a   pair   of   shorts   on   before   rushing   down   the   hall   to   her   oldest   son’s   room.   he’s   asleep   still,   but   she   can   see   the   tears   streaming   down   his   face   .   “   peter   ,   hey,   ”   words   are   spoken   softy   as   manicured   nails   brush   a   lock   of   hair   off   his   sweaty   face   .   “   you’re   okay   .   mum’s   here   now   .   nothing   is   going   to   get   you.   ”

“   peter.   ”   his   name   is   spoken   softly   as   she   kneels   in   front   of   him   ,   her   hands   on   his   knees.   “   you   don’t   need   to   feel   guilty   .   nothing   in   your   life   has   been   your   fault.   your   parents,   your   aunt   and   uncle   ,   you   becoming   spiderman.   none   of   that   was   in   your   control   .   you   could’ve   made   better   choices   by   telling   me   about   that   last   part,   but   it’s   nothing   to   feel   guilty   about   .”

she’s   sitting   on   her   couch,   watching   a   movie   with   her   daughter’s   head   in   her   lap   when   peter   comes   over   .   he   presses   a   quick   kiss   to   her   cheek   ,   causing   her   to   raise   her   eyebrow   .   “   -   what   do   you   want   ?   you’re   still   grounded   from   last   week   and   you   have   to   do   your   homework   .   ”

a   huff   falls   from   her   lips   as   she   reads   over   her   latest   client’s   file   .   “   solutions   ,   ideally   .”   how   is   she   suppose   to   defend   a   known   murderer   when   her   partner   was   so   certain   of   his   guilt   .   “   but   i   will   never   turn   down   comfort   if   it’s   coming   from   you   .”   words   are   honest   .   ever   since   law   school   ,   aaron   has   wormed   his   way   into   her   heart   and   her   soul   and   implanted   himself   there   .   she   might   have   dated   a   handful   of   other   people   -   she   was   even   engaged   at   one   point   -   even   watched   him   marry   someone   else   ,   but   he’s   stayed   there   .   wedged   into   the   deep   crack   of   her   heart   .   “   i   am   a   partner   at   a   massive   law   firm   and   yet   i   have   no   idea   what   i’m   doing   .”

there’s   a   mountain   of   dirty   laundry   in   their   bedroom   ,   toys   spread   out   across   every   inch   of   their   house   and   dishes   from   dinner   in   the   sink   .   it   has   been   a   long   time   since   peggy   hasn’t   been   good   at   something   ,   but   she   doesn’t   know   if   she’s   cut   out   for   motherhood   .   the   twins   are   four   months   old   and   she   still   hasn’t   gotten   it   .   still   doesn’t   understand   how   she’s   suppose   to   do   it   all   while   still   working   .   her   carreer   is   important   to   her   ,   she   isn’t   going   to   give   it   up   just   because   she   had   kids   .   “   i   think   you’re   the   first   person   in   my   life   who   has   ever   said   that   to   me   ,”   she   whispers   ,   her   hands   resting   against   the   kitchen   counter   .   there’s   tears   in   her   eyes   as   she   looks   over   at   her   husband   .   “   shouldn’t   i   have   gotten   used   to   this   by   now   ?”
