âw HAT DID YOU DO TO HIMââ
âIt would appear Iâm in quite the pickle, my dear. Simply... terrifying. Iâm without my powers. Iâm stuck in the personage of this disgusting little boy. His Vaporeon clearly knows I am not he and she keeps biting at me incessantly. And worst of all?
I cannot do anything. I cannot fix this mess unless Victor can learn that he has my powers and does something about it. Just the thought of what he must be doing right now is causing me to sweat.
Klara dear, please hold me- although I know you may refuse due to my person being in this.... wretched state. I would understand. I weep because I am... so terribly sorry. Simply... shameful. This must be the work of the Tangle.Â
This is fucking terrible. My head feels so nakedâ

â Quiet Me but REVERSE CAUSE,,,SHED BE THERE,,,TO TRY AND CALM HIM DURING ONE OF HIS EXPLOSIVE PSYCHIC SURGES,,,,THINK ABOUT IT,,,,  â Sincerely, @klararityâ ;Â
Testify. Open !
â. . .â
Certainly, this was the consequence of their actions. For trying to be a little too much like a hero ; when they were most certainly not.
So it would go completely thankless ; frenzied screams and desperate running as everyone took cover from what could only be described as a relentless explosion of emotionpsychic energy. Blonde locks look ashen in the flying debris, eyes obscured behind bifocals.Â
This one was particularly disturbing, because they were particularly stricken. Thereâs only so much injury a gentleman could take until the mask starts to crack ; and in Averyâs case, they werenât known for their patience. Quite the opposite. They were known for constantly being precariously perched on the edge, taking insult until the very last modicum pushed them off the brink of patience and eloquence to hurl into the vast expanse that was their emotions.
No, they werenât a monster. But they were a failure by every definition of the word. With great power came great responsibility, and such a blessing was wasted on such a horrid individual. So filled with rage, so embittered. So flawed that should a genuine act of kindness not be responded to with thanks, with condescension, rather ; itâs a shame they hadnât turned off their powers with the foresight of knowing their actions would never be appreciated. Their persona would and always be detested. Ugly. Undeserving.
ââTo... nearly anyone, at least.Â
Sand whipped around Avery like a cyclone ; anyone in their right mind had long since ran ( far, far away. ) Approaching them was a surefire way to get dragged in and spat out by sheer psychic energy. A certain way to get damaged beyond repair... to put it kindly.
Yet heels clacked all the while. Closer, closer. Unperturbed by the ugly whirlwind of emotions, not at all frightened by a heathen such as themself. Arms outstretched to mirror the brave figure.
Gravity still remained unsettled, but the sand stops in an instant: cascading onto the ground like a gentle rain-shower. The initial grains pour onto calculatedly placed, perfectly sprayed hair, but in an instant, a pocket of air envelops the silhouette ; no more debris hits, instead spilling around the invisible shield like grains in an hourglass.
Golden locks remain suspended in the air like tendrils, glassy eyes unblinking. Mouth unmoving. But words arenât needed.
Time doesnât move, but Averyâs hand outstretches every so slightly - ever so slowly. Fearful. Anything could happen. Anything could break or burn or snap without a momentâs notice - with no way to repair. No second chance. Psychic energy twisted things into unrecognizable trash with no method of saving. Of all the things, no- people they wanted to preserve ( cherish. protect. ) she was above all else. During a storm like this, it would be best for both of them to stay far, far away. Even if Avery had to hurt alone.Â
But she always did what she wanted. Avery would be amiss to try to persuade her to do otherwise. So gloved fingers gently reach out for calculatedly placed, perfectly sprayed pink hair. Even though they falter. They curl around a strand, gently brushing them as if to remember. That they are the same. In spite of it all, they are the same.
Heeled oxfords clack onto the ground. Avery accepts themselves into Klaraâs warm embrace. The gentle shower of sand stops, and another, wounded rainshower begins.Â

"Typical boomer."
âRemember what I said about your grandmother Opal dropping your toothbrush into the toilet and then putting it back without washing it? I misremembered. She actually dropped your toothbrush in there and flushed it and magicked it out and then put it back exactly where she found it precisely to test you. And you failed. And donât say Iâm wrong. You have no proof to refute it. You ought to ask her yourself if you doubt me.â

From their parents: âYouâre a disappointment to me.â
ââŠIâm sorry, Iâll do-âÂ
The pokedex gets slapped onto the pure white carpet. A loud clacking resounds in the foyer as the device bounces off the fluff and onto the hard wooden floor - but Avery refrains from acting on their impulse to pick it up and check it lest their parents use that as another reason to rip each other to shreds.
Mother and father bicker over whose fault it is- father says its motherâs fault for ever letting her indulge in such a waste of time in the first place; mother says itâs fatherâs fault, his personality was driving everyone up on the wall and she thought that a hobby would allow Avery some reprieve from his⊠less than stellar traits. They both conclude that regardless of whoever started it- Avery was now at fault, and it was of opportune timing to discuss (loudly, uncivilly, spitting at each otherâs face meanwhile,) what they were going to do as their child spiraled down this precarious path of disappointment.
One of the maids has the audacity to escort Avery out into the hall (she was always one of Averyâs favorites), and although they were far too used to this occurrence to be startled or shaken, it was still⊠simply a shame. They look down at their empty hands, still shaped to have been holding their precious encyclopedic device. Against the maidâs best interest, Avery walks back into the foyer to retrieve it, their parentsâ voices reaching strained levels of loud. They take note of their daughter coming back for the pokedex, and that becomes food for the argument; all she cared about was that stupid toy. That stupid toy that poisoned her discipline and distracted her from her studies. That plastic little thing that opened their mind to possibilities outside of whatever was laden in this clandestine, miserable house.Â
That little thing that was the key to unlocking their dreams.
( Theyâre sorry. Theyâll continue to do what they want. They shouldâve said that. Next time theyâll gather to courage to say that. )
Klara was waiting at the next town over. They should hurry and pack up.

âHm,â Avery lets out a soft, endeared chuckle.
âSuch scathing words. Itâs quite clear that you do not know me well at all. I am ambivalent towards you, but I suppose your willingness to speak your mind is laudable. Whether I shall do something in order to.... become nicer is debatable- but, well... we shall see. Predicting the future is not within my skillset.â

@klararityâ : đŽ
â Câmon! We gotta goooo! â
Theyâre being pulled, far more strongly than theyâd like- but the hand that strings them along is one that is all too familiar, all too agreeable.
â...Sorry, girls- --- gym - rules. Canât make any exceptions. Come back tomorrow.â
âAw, poo! That baldyâs wayyyyy too strict, isnât he?â
A sugary giggle resounds, and the hand that had dragged them to this point in Hulbury now held loosely onto their wrist.
-- -Â
âWell, âsokay. Iâm sooo tired too.â
âHomigosh, really!?â
Suddenly, theyâre at the Captainâs Table, seated at their own table that was far too ornate for two mere preteens. Yet that was the point- her eyes were wide with excitement, she was firing off comments here and there; Avery liked to listen. Avery liked to watch as she took photos of the setting- to save them for posting online later. Theyâd ordered a whole fresh crab to themselves along with fish and chips, and drank sparkling apple cider in tall flutes meant for champagne. Avery had yet to tell her that theyâd even get desert later- fruit sherbet, which theyâd bet sheâd love-- that was a surprise, to be the utmost cherry on top.
It was a lot, lot, lot for just the two of them- but that was the point. Avery wanted to at least be able to impress her in some way; and they were shyly radiant that it had seemingly worked.
âOoh, letâs take a selfie!â
âNoo, I wonât post it- promise! Itâll just be between us! ... Reeally? YESSS! Okay, here!â

âAaavery...â
âAvey...!â
The bespectacled esper snaps opens their eyes.Â
There they lay in a field, head upon the lap of their best friend, soaking in the summer sun. It was a familiar scene- but not from a specific memory whatsoever. They rouse in their spot, but gentle, manicured hands place themselves on Averyâs head, softly beginning to pet their hair.
âIâm gonna miss you, babes!â
--Â
âYouâve fallen too far behind.â
-Â - --- - ?
âItâs too late, now! Donâtcha remember? You failed. You failed, so Iâm leaving.â
â....I know you tried reeaaally, really hard, baby. We all know. You did your best, and Iâm, like, so, so proud of you- Youâve grown up soooo much! But youâre still missing it and I need to go soon.â
âIâll never forget you though, âkay? Just because we'll never see each other again doesnât mean I wonât think of you!!! Youâll always be able to remember the good times we had. Thisâll be our last time tâgether, but letâs just make the most of it, okay?
âAww, I know...â
âDonât cry, Avery... arenât you happy for me? I did it!â
âBaww, I know you are...â
The stroking of Averyâs hair is methodological, soothing them as they ---.
â...Iâm gonna miss these moments too, yanno?
But thereâs nothing you can do...â
âI  v e  o u  v ey! thats whatâsâ

Avery snaps open their eyes.
So much for sleeping. Meditation has been showing far better results as of late.
