Always causin' some trouble, getting people to picket and fight in the street for their rights — making them fat cats give a little somethin' to working folk. But didn't we always have the 40-hour work week? Folks could always afford a house, right? But Reagan said the government is the enemy and we gotta get it out of the pockets of them rich people and the money will trickle down on us like Niagara Falls. It's the goddamn government, man. They ain't doin' nothin', so let's take away the protections that Hoffa and those other dudes fought for and see what happens. Nothin. We ain't got jobs and we ain't got no health care and no retirement, neither. And those damn Democrats, they just keep taxing and spending and killing babies and stealing our guns. And the Republicans say, just keep votin' for us and the money is goin' trickle right down on you like a shower from heaven. Just be patient a little longer. Son of a bitch. What're we gonna do?

"I'm just a creative person and wanted to make new music and needed a home for it," McCoy tells Billboard.

"I love everything we do in the band, but I think it's a very specific thing. I was creating all this music on my own, and it didn't really feel appropriate to be bringing different kinds of material in. When I moved home (to West Virginia) I built my own studio in the basement and wanted to learn how to produce and make my own record and experiment with new sounds and new styles and stuff, just for the fun of it.

"I ended up with all these (songs) I'd done and thought maybe somebody other than me might enjoy this music, so I felt it was time to share it."

Wander Wide's gently rolling title track dates by several years and is a rare co-write, penned with The Voice Season 5 contestant Chance Pena. "He sang 'Wagon Wheel' or something that kind of tied to Old Crow or Americana music and I got a call that, 'Hey, he wants to write a song with you,'" says McCoy, whose father was an electronic musician whose inventions included electronic sound chips for toys, including Battleship. "I said, 'Sure, send him over -- Chance and Chance can get together and write a song!' It was a watershed moment, the first track I felt proud of as a producer."

"Wander Wide" was originally written for Pena to record, but his team rejected it. “They basically just weren't into it," McCoy recalls. But McCoy liked the track, and when he began putting the album together in earnest he decided to give it his own shot.

"It wound up being a centerpiece for the record," McCoy notes. "The lyrics were written from my perspective of traveling out west, being in the wilderness, white water rafting, living out of my truck and driving around, being really in tune with nature and living this adventurous lifestyle. But the flipside is I had to leave behind everybody who was significant to me, all the people I felt connected to. So there's a two-edged thing, and I think that resonates with people. And the title fits well for what the record is, the adventurous nature of it."

McCoy has played Europe twice this year with his own band and is headed back in October. He's lining up some U.S. dates as well and considers himself on an amicable leave from Old Crow Medicine Show, which was original slated to take the year off from touring but wound up scheduling some dates. "I haven't officially quit the band," McCoy says. "I'm taking a year off to do this (album), but everything's fine between us. The bass player (Morgan Jahnig) engineered this record for me, even." 

McCoy has more new music coming, too, including a track for the film The Peanut Butter Falcon, due in August. And he has his eye on another solo album in the not too distant future. "I think we're talking about next year starting to put out music again because there's a lot of good songs I have that I want to put out. Why stop, right?"

As we prepare to reconvene the Uni-Tierra Califas Democracy Ateneo (Saturday, September 23), Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Trump administration's decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). The decision impacts over 800,000 recipients, or Dreamers, with the threat of deportation an act that, paradoxically, will come at a high cost for the US —an estimated $60 billion in lost revenues and some $280 billion over ten years. Overlooked in this equation is the 11 million folks who are here and who contribute to the nation's well-being. Throughout the country people are mobilizing. Immigrant rights activists and their allies have been taking to the streets in anticipation of Trump's announcement and since to urge Congress to formally put provisions in place to support DACA recipients and to find a way to roll back Trump's vitriol against the undocumented community. The mobilizations in favor of DACA joined folks already out in great numbers confronting white supremacist and neo-nazi fascist hate groups. Beginning in October of 2016 the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) and the Ejercito Zapatista Liberation Nacional (EZLN) launched a new initiative to focus the plight of Indigenous peoples throughout Mexico and make it the center of the political discussion. Yet, it is more than that, since it is not just to highlight the struggle of the Indigenous but to draw attention to the peril that all of us confront as we resist the daily violences, both material and symbolic, of this particular phase of capitalism. The proposal invites all of us to re-evaluate how we are or have been organized in our communities. How we are either seduced by the spectacle, that is the more general spectacle of capitalist consumption or the more specific spectacles of elections, etc. It also asks us to interrogate what challenges we face as we are confronted by what appears to be the dissolution of capitalism, the crumbling of the nation-state, and the end of patriarchy.

Those Indigenous communities who resist do so at great risk to their individual and collective well-being as the assassinations of the 43 students at Ayotzinapa illustrates. Thus, the current CNI-EZLN initiative is a creative response to the increasingly complex, quotidian violence that threatens Mexico. In a few words, the proposal is a call to mobilize people’s democracy from the ground up organized in the CNI's call to permanent assembly followed by the selection of two representatives from each Indigenous community throughout Mexico to form the Indigenous Governing Congress (CGI). It is the CGI that has selected María de Jesús Patricio Martínez, (or Marichuy as she is affectionately known) as a spokesperson who will enter into the upcoming electoral spectacle. The mobilization is not in fact to have an Indigenous woman sit in the presidential seat, but rather to use the elections as a platform to draw attention to the violence that threatens Mexico’s Indigenous communities while highlighting the grassroots democracy that is quickly spreading across Mexico in the form of permanent assemblies, the CGI, and the expanding and revitalized CNI network. Indigenous peoples of Mexico are determined to disrupt "the party," the lavish celebration enjoyed by elites each election cycle, by intervening in the national election as counter-spectacle. While Marichuy will be running as an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential elections, her purpose, and the goal of the CNI-Zapatistas as a whole, is not to win the presidential seat and pretend to direct Mexico's future from Los Pinos. Rather, the strategy is to open up a political space for dialogue and change from the bottom-up while also exposing the impact that the formal election has in co-opting the many grassroots organizations that have emerged and diverting the political energies of people on the ground. Change, as the Zapatistas say repeatedly, comes with organization, that is the hard work of finding new ways to come to agreement at all levels of social and political organization based on the examination of specific problems. In other words, change will not come through continued faith in the representative system and the elected leaders who perform already established roles reading from pre-determined scripts about progress and prosperity that will be reserved for a select few. Everyone knows that progress and prosperity as imagined by a few benefits an increasingly smaller group of select people with little care for the vast majority who struggle.

What does this effort by Mexico's diverse Indigenous community mean for autonomists outside of the country? First, it is worthwhile recognizing what and how much the initiative exposes in our own contexts. Many people are at first caught off guard. It is difficult to appreciate the effort and manage its critical tension, namely that it's at one moment a campaign for the presidency and in another it is not. The mobilization is not in fact to have an Indigenous woman sit in the presidential seat. Regardless of the outcome, the exercise of radical, that is direct, democracy by real people making decisions about their own struggles on an everyday basis has already been achieved in the permanent assemblies, the CGI, and the expanded and revitalized CNI network. The initiative has created space for this to proliferate across communities and regions.

This invites a serious collective "self-critique" for those of us in urban areas of the Global North. We are called upon to critically reflect if we ourselves are organized at the most local level and beyond/outside of any mediation or control of the electoral spectacle and the canard that is American style representative government —a prevarication violently being imposed throughout the world. What tools do we claim and make use of to arrive at agreement about how we interact with each other and our environment within spaces that sustain us, like a watershed or some other kind of environmentally sensitive region or even a territory previously inhabited and not yet conceded?

It is yet another provocation to move "beyond solidarity" as a central focus of our political work, a call to claim the struggle for ourselves in our locales. That is to say, we have organized ourselves convening spaces of reflection and action to collectively investigate what must be done. Our driving motivation has been to arrive at a point that we can learn from other struggles. What tools can we learn from other communities of struggle that may or may not be applicable in our own context? Of course, we can make use of tools, conceptual and political, generated in other contexts, but we must claim them with caution. A tool like assembly would be a tool that we would want to take on, for example. The point is that we can not take for granted how these technologies work and how easily they may or may not be shared across struggles. The assembly, once common throughout all of Indigenous Mexico, if we can proffer generalizations at this point, is rooted in work and generated out of the need to make collective decisions about how a community organizes itself to produce what it needs and to manage the environment it engages. This is what what Grimaldo Rengifo calls crianza mutua. (see, G. Rengifo, "Niñez y ayllu en la cosmovisión andino-amazónica") But, how do we engage new tools when we are also trying to discover the practical and necessary limits that we must agree to in our locales?

At the core of this political force is the agreement, the most basic of convivial tools. How do we organize ourselves so the agreement is at the center of our political formation? "When we resist as a collective," explains Sup Moises, "it is done with discipline; that is through agreement. We make an agreement regarding how we are going to deal with different types of problems." March 5 2018 San Lorenzo and Camoapa Nicaragua

It was great this morning to meet more of the folks who are on the tour with us at  our hotel in Managua at breakfast. We headed out early to visit the Laguna de Carbonal school in San Lorenzo at which El Porvenir partnered to bring clean water and sanitation, in the form of latrines, with another non-profit H2O for Life, which was started by Patty Hall, the mother of Steve Hall, one of our new friends.

According to Wikipedia:

“San Lorenzo is a municipality in the Boaco Department of Nicaragua. It has a population of 28,100 (2006, est.) and an extension of 559.61 km. The economy is based mainly on agricultural and some agro-pecuarian activities. The capital is the town of San Lorenzo located 91 km from Managua.

Most people in the municipality (70%) lives in rural areas. The mayor of the municipality of San Lorenzo is Leonel Leonidas Sasiga Madrigal from the Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC).

Back in 1852, Josefa Tellez, owner of a small farm in the vicinity of the area where the town of San Lorenzo is located today, found a religious image of San Lorenzo. From that day the place was known as San Lorenzo de los Tellez in honor to Josefa Tellez.

San Lorenzo was officially granted the title of town on August 23, 1858. With new settlers from Granada Department in 1872, the town became more populated. The municipality of San Lorenzo was part of the Chontales Department until 1935, when it became part of the Boaco Department. “

It was wonderful to meet the teachers and students at the school, who were all very friendly and happy to see us.  El Porvenir has worked in this community for many years and the staff, made up mostly of local residents, is respected and liked by the families here.  El Porvenir’s mission statement is:

“We believe all people deserve clean water, safe sanitation, and the knowledge to sustain it for future generations. We partner with the people of Nicaragua so that they can build a better future for themselves through the sustainable development of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH) education projects. We also take it a step farther with our watershed management program which promotes water flow, increases food security, and reduces the impact of climate change. Clean drinking water for all Nicaraguans—no matter how remote or how bad the road is—is at the core of everything we do.”

Having clean water to drink, to grow vegetables in their tiny community garden, and to wash their hands makes a big difference to the children at this school and keeps them healthier and happier.

Jenna opened the event at the school by thanking them for having us there and telling them how excited we all are to be here to meet them and see their school and their water and sanitation projects. Then the teachers and students sang to us and explained how they are learning so much about the importance of personal hygiene.

Kathi, Mark, James, and Dale were entranced by the children singing their hand-washing song, as were Mickey, Hannah, and Lori (below).  Steve, with the blue hat and white sunglasses, in back, was especially moved by the presentation because H2O for Life, the organization he works for, as the Director of Global Partnerships and Schools, has been instrumental in raising funds for the water and sanitation systems at this school.

“In the past 11 years, H2O for Life’s program has supported implementation of WASH programs for more than 865 global school partners impacting over 385,000 students in the developing world who now have access to clean water and sanitation. H2O for Life has engaged more than 1,500 U.S. schools, many for multiple years, impacting over 625,000 youth in the United States. Youth have been inspired to take creative action through walks for water, water fairs, bucket drives, and a host of other events that has raised $3.5 million dollars for these WASH programs. The funds are matched by our NGO partners who design and implement the WASH projects at the local recipient school communities. This funding model has provided a $7 million-dollar impact for much needed programs in schools around the world.”

I was surrounded by children as I spoke with them in Spanish and asked them about their hopes and dreams for the future. Many of them said  they wanted to  be farmers when they were grown, like  their fathers, but a few said they’d like to be teachers, futbol (soccer) players, doctors, and nurses. Before having a school like this they couldn’t have hoped to become anything other than subsistence farmers.

Paloma is one of the sweetest, smartest, most caring children I’ve ever known.  As I’ve watched her grow up I’ve loved every moment I’ve spent with her.  Being with her and seeing this village and the wonderful people here through her eyes was one of the best things about this adventure.

Jackie and her husband Dick have been volunteers on many brigades for many years here and people know and love them.  Nicaragua is like their second home and they have enjoyed watching the changes made by the Nicaraguan people because of the opportunities made possible for them by El Porvenir.

After we left the village we went to lunch at a local restaurant before taking a tour of the watershed.  Mark and Joe are standing in front of the restaurant sign in the photo above.

This was the first village restaurant we visited and it actually belonged to a small village hotel.  We were impressed because it was clean, comfortable, and the food was delicious.  There was even a pool in which we dipped our hot and dusty feet!

After lunch we jumped back on the bus and headed for the La  Montanita Watershed, which provides the water for San Lorenzo water systems.

As you can see, El Porvenir partners with many other global NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to bring clean water and sanitation to rural Nicaragua.   The kids are here because they go to school half-day and they were excited to be here to meet us and celebrate with other people from their village the new well that has been built.  The water trough above was built for the cattle that used to always drink from the stream and pollute the water. Now even the cattle have clean water!

This new bridge allows people and cattle to pass over the stream, rather than  through it, and when it is high during the rainy season, the children can still go to school by crossing it.

Jenna and Paloma were always happy to pose for me.  You can see some local handwork on Paloma’s bag, which she bought from a street vendor in Granada.

There are dogs EVERYWHERE in Nicaragua, as well as horses, pigs, and chickens.  Animals are either part of the family, transportation, or food here, and sometimes all three!

The trees are magnificent here in this watershed which has been planted and tended by El Porvenir staff and volunteers for many years now.  The watershed maintenance is a very important part of El Porvenir’s strategy to make clean water sustainable in Nicaragua.  Eddy, a member of the El Porvenir staff in San Lorenzo, explained all this to us as we enjoyed the natural beauty of the area.

Many villagers arrived to meet us and celebrate the new well.  It was a happy occasion for us all.

After hiking into the watershed and back out we were ready to relax for the rest of the afternoon so we headed for our hotel in Camoapa, the MarSol,  and Jenna checked us in at the front desk.

The  MarSol was also a very nice hotel and our rooms were clean and bright.  After dinner we “hit  the sack”  early because we have an early breakfast and full day tomorrow.

Tour Granville Island: the island that’s not an island

Granville Island is like a tiny world unto itself, small in square footage but big on things to see and do. Peruse an art gallery, watch a play, go on a whimsical shopping spree at the many artisanal shops, and—most importantly—eat your heart out. There are tons of restaurants to hit, and be sure to poke around the Granville Island Public Market, an overwhelming smorgasbord of local fare.

Have a BBQ…on a boat!

While you’re at the Granville Island Public Market, load up a picnic basket and hop on Joe’s BBQ Boat—no explanation needed. Because what’s better than floating around on the open water and soaking up the sunshine? Doing so while working up a good meat sweat. With fantastic breweries boasting some of the finest craft beers in the world, a good old fashioned crawl beckons any beer lover who visits. East Vancouver is your best bet for variety and walkability. You can check out: Strange Fellows Brewing, Andina Brewing Company, Parallel 49 Brewing, Postmark Brewing, Doan’s Craft Brewing, Callister Brewing Company, and Strathcona Beer Company.

Have your best brunch

It’s no accident that I’ve placed the brunch options after the brewery crawl. Whether you’re in dire need of a greasy spoon or looking to brunch in style, we’ve got you covered. Yolks showed up on everyone’s list when we asked around for favourite brunch spots, as did Chambar, Medina Cafe, and Fable Restaurant. Jam Cafe, Wildebeest, Catch 122, and The Distillery are guaranteed to please as well. As is Canadian brunch custom, you’re required to order a Caesar. Don’t ask what’s in it.

Hit the Aquarium

If it does rain, your indoor options are covered. Conveniently tucked away in Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium is a must-do. See giant sea lions and playful seals, watch penguins toddle and slide around (aw!), touch a starfish or manta ray (weird!) and try to find the octopus (you can’t, he’s too sneaky) as you journey through B.C. and beyond’s underwater world.

Oh canyon, my canyon

As past speaker Wil Reynold’s knows, the Capilano Canyon suspension bridge and cliff walk is worth a few anxious moments. Just a quick jaunt across the Lions Gate Bridge (an attraction on its own!), this otherworldly spot makes it hard to believe you’re so close to the city. Not too far away is another canyon and yes, another suspension bridge in Lynn Canyon Park—a little less crowded, 100% free, and as beautiful as ever.

Go to Queen Elizabeth Park at sunset. It has a beautiful view of the North Shore mountains and the city from west to east. The gardens are so beautiful in full bloom in August.  – Jaclyn Cummings

Hands down, a walk, bike or run along the seawall is a must-do for every Vancouver visitor. Flanked by the Pacific Ocean and Stanley Park, it’s easily accessible from anywhere downtown and the simplest route to absorbing Vancouver’s natural beauty.

No need to bring the gear—rent a bike at Yes Cycle or Cycle City Tours, two of many rental shops.

Tour Granville Island: the island that’s not an island

Granville Island is like a tiny world unto itself, small in square footage but big on things to see and do. Peruse an art gallery, watch a play, go on a whimsical shopping spree at the many artisanal shops, and—most importantly—eat your heart out. There are tons of restaurants to hit, and be sure to poke around the Granville Island Public Market, an overwhelming smorgasbord of local fare.

Have a BBQ…on a boat!

While you’re at the Granville Island Public Market, load up a picnic basket and hop on Joe’s BBQ Boat—no explanation needed. Because what’s better than floating around on the open water and soaking up the sunshine? Doing so while working up a good meat sweat. Find fellow BBQ buffs to join you in the CTAConf Facebook group and fill that boat up! Conference networking at its finest.

With fantastic breweries boasting some of the finest craft beers in the world, a good old fashioned crawl beckons any beer lover who visits. East Vancouver is your best bet for variety and walkability. You can check out: Strange Fellows Brewing, Andina Brewing Company, Parallel 49 Brewing, Postmark Brewing, Doan’s Craft Brewing, Callister Brewing Company, and Strathcona Beer Company.

Have your best brunch

It’s no accident that I’ve placed the brunch options after the brewery crawl. Whether you’re in dire need of a greasy spoon or looking to brunch in style, we’ve got you covered. Yolks showed up on everyone’s list when we asked around for favourite brunch spots, as did Chambar, Medina Cafe, and Fable Restaurant. Jam Cafe, Wildebeest, Catch 122, and The Distillery are guaranteed to please as well. As is Canadian brunch custom, you’re required to order a Caesar. Don’t ask what’s in it.

If it does rain, your indoor options are covered. Conveniently tucked away in Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium is a must-do. See giant sea lions and playful seals, watch penguins toddle and slide around (aw!), touch a starfish or manta ray (weird!) and try to find the octopus (you can’t, he’s too sneaky) as you journey through B.C. and beyond’s underwater world.

Oh canyon, my canyon

As past speaker Wil Reynold’s knows, the Capilano Canyon suspension bridge and cliff walk is worth a few anxious moments. Just a quick jaunt across the Lions Gate Bridge (an attraction on its own!), this otherworldly spot makes it hard to believe you’re so close to the city. Not too far away is another canyon and yes, another suspension bridge in Lynn Canyon Park—a little less crowded, 100% free, and as beautiful as ever.

Lightning round recos for day trips and more:

Go to Queen Elizabeth Park at sunset. It has a beautiful view of the North Shore mountains and the city from west to east. The gardens are so beautiful in full bloom in August.  – Jaclyn Cummings

Head up to the Sea-to-Sky Gondola! You won’t regret it. It’s very accessible for most people and the views are incredible. – Rob Bucci

Stay in Kitsilano. It was a beautiful area! I would probably stay there every time I visit. I’d recommend bringing the fam—it was a great city to have the kid and felt really walkable, so take advantage of that. – Wil Reynolds

Go to Bowen Island and spend the day exploring. It has something for everyone from hiking and biking to eating and drinking. Check out my favourite store, Branch and People. Then go eat seafood and drink a good old Canadian Caesar. – Kathleen Reid

If you’re here for workshop and conference days only…

Depending on whether you’ve signed up for the August 27th workshops, Monday through Wednesday will be jam-packed with marketing learning. Monday’s workshops are optional and on a first-come, first-served basis after registration is sent out to ticket holders.

Both Tuesday and Wednesday are busy with talks starting at 9am sharp. These days you likely won’t want to miss anything in the theatre (save for trips to the food trucks outside). There’s a stellar lineup gracing our stage, after all.

Depending on whether you’ve signed up for the August 27th workshops, Monday through Wednesday will be jam-packed with marketing learning. Monday’s workshops are optional and on a first-come, first-served basis after registration is sent out to ticket holders.

Conferences, conferences everywhere. SearchLove here, INBOUND there. There’s no shortage of great marketing conferences to choose from, but you’ve likely got a finite budget your marketing department can put toward them. How are you supposed to know which Martech events are the best bang for your buck?

If you’ll be around a couple extra days…

The Call to Action Conference, insofar as the speaker’s talks, takes place August 28—29th at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. There’s also an optional day of hands-on marketing workshops on August 27th at Unbounce HQ. If you tack on the weekend days before to your trip, or an extra few days at the end of the conference, here are some itinerary options to fill up your stay:

See the sea, walk the wall

Hands down, a walk, bike or run along the seawall is a must-do for every Vancouver visitor. Flanked by the Pacific Ocean and Stanley Park, it’s easily accessible from anywhere downtown and the simplest route to absorbing Vancouver’s natural beauty.

No need to bring the gear—rent a bike at Yes Cycle or Cycle City Tours, two of many rental shops.

Tour Granville Island: the island that’s not an island

Granville Island is like a tiny world unto itself, small in square footage but big on things to see and do. Peruse an art gallery, watch a play, go on a whimsical shopping spree at the many artisanal shops, and—most importantly—eat your heart out. There are tons of restaurants to hit, and be sure to poke around the Granville Island Public Market, an overwhelming smorgasbord of local fare.

Have a BBQ…on a boat!

While you’re at the Granville Island Public Market, load up a picnic basket and hop on Joe’s BBQ Boat—no explanation needed. Because what’s better than floating around on the open water and soaking up the sunshine? Doing so while working up a good meat sweat. Find fellow BBQ buffs to join you in the CTAConf Facebook group and fill that boat up! Conference networking at its finest.

Visit an East Van brewery (or two)

With fantastic breweries boasting some of the finest craft beers in the world, a good old fashioned crawl beckons any beer lover who visits. East Vancouver is your best bet for variety and walkability. You can check out: Strange Fellows Brewing, Andina Brewing Company, Parallel 49 Brewing, Postmark Brewing, Doan’s Craft Brewing, Callister Brewing Company, and Strathcona Beer Company.

Have your best brunch

It’s no accident that I’ve placed the brunch options after the brewery crawl. Whether you’re in dire need of a greasy spoon or looking to brunch in style, we’ve got you covered. Yolks showed up on everyone’s list when we asked around for favourite brunch spots, as did Chambar, Medina Cafe, and Fable Restaurant. Jam Cafe, Wildebeest, Catch 122, and The Distillery are guaranteed to please as well. As is Canadian brunch custom, you’re required to order a Caesar. Don’t ask what’s in it.

Hit the Aquarium

If it does rain, your indoor options are covered. Conveniently tucked away in Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium is a must-do. See giant sea lions and playful seals, watch penguins toddle and slide around (aw!), touch a starfish or manta ray (weird!) and try to find the octopus (you can’t, he’s too sneaky) as you journey through B.C. and beyond’s underwater world.

Oh canyon, my canyon

As past speaker Wil Reynold’s knows, the Capilano Canyon suspension bridge and cliff walk is worth a few anxious moments. Just a quick jaunt across the Lions Gate Bridge (an attraction on its own!), this otherworldly spot makes it hard to believe you’re so close to the city. Not too far away is another canyon and yes, another suspension bridge in Lynn Canyon Park—a little less crowded, 100% free, and as beautiful as ever.
