                                                  “     don’t     –    ”

                    it’s     uttered     as     a     mere     whisper,     barely     above     a     quiet     murmur     as     she     clings     to     her     sister,     inhales     the     scent     of     her     shampoo     (     it’s     soothing,     it     allows     Parvati     to     recall   childhood     memories     of     Padma     reluctantly     allowing     her     to     put     makeup     on     her     face   ),     and     the     moment     her     sister’s     words    actually     sink     in,     she     finds     her    arms     tightening     around     her     frame.     Parvati     doesn’t     like     being     scared     in     front     of     Padma     –     perhaps     it’s     a     twins     thing,     you     have     to     pretend     you’re     the     other’s    rock,     their     pillar.     She     hates     letting     Padma     see     her     vulnerable,     because     a     part     of     her     has     always     thought     she     had     to     take     care     of     her.     that’s     what     Gryffindors     are     known     for,     right?     Their     bravery.

                  The     funny     thing     is,     Parvati     hasn’t     cried     a     single     time     during     their     seventh     year     –     Padma     says     she’s     just     shutting     off     everything,     that     she’s     grown     numb     to     everything     they     have   seen     and     endured     so     far.     Some   classmates     think     if     they     are     quiet     and     docile     enough,     the     death     eaters     won’t     get    to     them     (     like     a     sort     of     boogieman    creeping     in     the     corners     of     the     castle     ).     Parvati     thinks     they     need     to     fight,     and     Neville     agrees,     and     she     knows     there’s    something     else     they’re     not     telling     her     about     Harry’s     whereabouts,     why     he     took     off   with     Hermione     and     Ron.     Harry     would     never    abandon     them     like     that     in     times     of     need    –     like     Parvati     herself,     he     always    has     to     be     strong     for     everybody.

               “     don’t     say     that     …     ”     words     finally     come     out,     after     an     eternal     pause     of     heavy,     dreadful    silence     interrupted     barely     by     the     ticking     of     the     clock     on     the     desk     (     she’s     snuck     into     Padma’s     dorm     room     again,     the     sisters     know     each     others’     common     room     passwords     –     Parvati     wouldn’t     even     think     about     not     sharing     it     with     Padma     ).     and     as     much     as     they     are     terrified     of     being     caught     and     punished     yet     again,     the     sense     of     rebelling     against     evil     is     what     keeps     them     going     (     at     least,     that’s     the     case     with     Parvati     ).

               “     you’re     not     gonna     die     …     you’re     not     allowed     to     die     –     ”     it’s     selfish     (     she’s    the     selfish     sister,     after     all     ),     breathed    against     Padma’s     hair,     “     nobody’s     gonna   die     …     i     know     harry     will     come     back   and     save     us     again.     just     like     he     always    does     …     ”     she     sounds     childish,     Parvati    has     that     blind     loyalty     towards     the     friends   she’s     made     in     Hogwarts     that     she     believes    is     the     most     Gryffindor     of     traits,     “     ‘till     then,     we     have     to     be     brave.     I     don’t     …     ”     a     heavy     intake    of     air,     her     bones     ache,     her     muscles     are     sore     and     bruised     from     agonizing     Cruciatus    sessions     “     i     never     want     to   give     them     the     joy     of     seeing     me     scared   again     …     ”
