The kid kept side glancing at him and was sitting as far away from him as possible. He had hesitated to get into the passenger's seat but after a moment he did, despite how he was practically hugging the door.
They drove in silence for a majority of the time, Dean glanced at him periodically and the few times their eyes met the kid seemed close to throwing himself out the window. A mixture of emotions coursed through him and he tried to gain control over it, tightening his grip on the steering wheel.
Finally, it was the kid that broke the silence. “Where are we going?” he asked, his voice shaking slightly.
“You did something and we’re going to see what it is exactly you did.” Dean told him. “And I’m really hoping that this is the real thing.”
“I didn't do anything.” the kid mumbled, wrapping his arms around himself. He took a deep breath and Dean noticed that his hands were shaking.
“You did and it might very well be a really good thing.” Dean told him, taking a moment to just look at the kid, remembering what Sam had said on the phone.
“Then what did I do?” the kid asked, taking a chance and looking at him.
“You’ll see.” Dean told him, turning back to the road ahead of them. His eyes went to the clock on the dashboard, they’d be there in less than thirteen minutes.
He couldn't stop thinking about Sam, about the fact that apparently the kid had been the one to help bring her back to life. In the short conversation they managed to have so much had been said.
She didn’t blame the kid, she didn’t think of the kid like Dean was. All he saw was Lucifer's kid, what had been forced onto his sister, and the reason that his sister was dead.
She saw her son and her son, their family. It had been only them for so long, then mom had been given back to them for a short while. And now there was another person, another being that shared their blood.
But it was hard to look at him. Maybe if Sam had been there the entire time, if the birthing hadn’t killed her, it would’ve been easier but he’d never been the best when Sam was taken from him. The first time she had been killed he had thrown himself into hell to bring her back to life. When she had gone to hell herself with Michael and Lucifer it was only because it was her dying wish that he had gone to live with Lisa and Ben and even then he couldn’t find his happiness.
He wasn’t going to lie and say that he’d never thought about Sam having a normal life, wishing that he could give her that, and a normal life included having a partner she would marry and have a baby in their future.
But his imagination never went that far, his mind never made another person in Sam’s life that would help to create the baby. In his mind it was always the three of them, him, Sam, and the baby. He’d be a male role model in the kids life, he and Sam would argue over the best way to raise the kid, but it would just be the both of them and the kid.
But on his own? Sam died from birthing the kid and it just being the both of them? That wasn’t something he ever thought or even considered, and it just made everything all that more worse.
And if he was being honest with himself, he took it all out on the kid because he was the only one here to be taken it out on. Lucifer was trapped in an alternative universe with their mother, Sam had been dead, and as a result, he lashed out.
Should he apologize? Would the kid even understand what he was apologizing for, would he accept it out of principle or because he wanted to? The kid had reached for him multiple times and each time Dean had not only pushed him away, but also literally punched him away a few times.
He didn’t even have a name. Sam didn’t name him and he hadn’t picked him one, nor had the kid picked one.
Or even if he did, he hadn’t told Dean, and why would he have told him? Its like not
Dean glanced at the kid again, this time he looked back at him and didn’t look away.
“Do you have a name?” he asked quietly.
The kid hesitated but then spoke. “Mom...she told me that she had wanted to call me after someone that meant a lot to her. She told me about...her dad, grandpa?” he tried before he shrugged. “John I think, but she never really gave me a real name.”
“You didn’t pick one?”
“I wanted mom to name me.” he said quietly, turning his head to look down at the floor of the car. “But she wasn’t here so...I wanted you to name me instead.”
The kid was definitely Sam’s kid, he wore and used the Winchester guilt and even with no experience he knew how to hit Dean right in the heart.
Or at least he knew how to hit Dean once that he was actually listening to him.
“Dean? Where are we going?” the kid asked again.
Dean let out a deep breath. “You did something, and if it’s the real thing, it's a good thing. A really good thing.”
The kid looked at him again. “So if it's me, I did something good?” he asked, his voice wavering slightly.
“Yeah kid, you did something good.” Dean said with a tense nod, trying to untangle the emotions rushing in his chest as they finally reached the gas station and there, just a few feet away, was Sam turning towards the impala’s engine. “You did really good.”
Dean didn’t bother to park the car, just stopped the car in place and threw the door open. Sam had immediately ran towards him and it took barely a moment for her to launch herself into his arms, wrapping their arms around one another.
“Sammy.” he whispered his voice cracking, holding her tightly yet tenderly. Logically he knew that he should test her. Holy water, silver, all the standard procedures. He buried his face in her hair and neck and just breathed her in, holding her as close as he could to himself. “Sammy.”
“Dean.” Sam whispered, clinging to him just as tightly. He could feel her cry softly and he moved enough to stroke at her hair, his fingers getting caught in the strands. “Oh god, you’re here.”
“Course.” Dean said his voice heavy. He pulled back enough to look at her, really look at her, and he managed a smile, just grinning at her. She grinned back at him, gripping at him before her eyes went to the impala and her eyes widened. Dean turned as well.
The kid had gotten out of the impala, staring at Sam almost reverently. He slowly walked towards her, his eyes just moving over her as if to memorize every last detail of her.
Sam stared back at him, a touch of confusion on her face before it disappeared. She moved towards him as well, slowly and carefully. They were inches apart and stopped, just staring at one another.
“Its you.” Sam whispered. Her hands were shaking as they reached for him. “You’re him. You’re...mine.”
The kids face crumbled and he reached for her, leaning into her touch when her hands cupped his face. His hands came up to hold hers and there were tears in his eyes.
“Mom.” he whispered, voice breaking and legs buckling. Sam moved the rest of the way and immediately wrapped her arms around him, holding him close.
“You’re my son.” Sam whispered, holding him close. “You’re my son.”

Chapter 23, Full Hearts, Empty Pockets
I want to point out again that we’re STILL in February.  Do you think Melissa de la Cruz knows how long of a month February is?
Like, we can move into March at this point.  Pretty sure we’d already be there if I added up the days.  But lord knows I’m not going back to do that.
Walking on a cloud after another evening with Eliza, Alex had lost all track of time.
Do you sense what I sense is coming?
“Password, Colonel?”
Oooooooh yeahhhhhh.
He had forgotten the password—which was rather awkward since he was in charge of coming up with them.
“Er…Eliza?” he said after a moment.
Well, if Ham were really in charge of coming up with them, it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s it.
It’s not that, of course, but Hamilton keeps trying.
“Elizabeth?” Alex said.  “Beth?  Betty?  Betsey?  Bits?  Lisa?  Liza?  Eliza?”
You did that one already, silly.
And just when I think you cannot mess up the passcode story because it is legit perfect.
“And I shall keep trying”—Alex saluted the guard as he sauntered past him towards the mansion—“for it is the only name on my mind.  Feel free to shoot me, Corporal,” he added.  “I am so in love that bullets will only bounce off.”
Like, even dead Alexander Hamilton thinks this guy is a little much.
Instead of a ten year old telling Ham the passcode, which is truly a huge part of the charm of the story, the Lieutenant just gives it up.
“Laurens is right, you are a gone man.”
EXCUSE ME MY BOYFRIEND TENCH SAID THAT NOT JOHN LAURENS.
The next morning, Hamilton gets a note from Gertrude inviting him over to dinner, just the Cochrans, the girls, and the boyfriends.
Hamilton takes this all as a good sign, of course.
Certainly their time together so far had been encouraging, but he didn’t want to assume too much.  But he didn’t want to play it cool either, lest she think he was careless of her feelings.”
Pal, you are 100% not playing it cool.
Hamilton spends a long time prepping for dinner, even taking oranges meant for the rest of the officers so he’ll have a gift for his hostess.  That’s rude!
He’s the last one to arrive and finds the girls in the parlor.
Van Rensselaer was out of earshot, yet the drone of his voice could be discerned from the expression on his face.  Church stared at him blankly, clutching a goblet as though it were the only thing that kept him from bolting from the room.
I just realized that the longer Ham spends with Eliza, the ruder he’s becoming. HMMM.
Gertrude is thankful for the oranges and it’s now fine he took them.  Anything to make her happy!
She leaned in close, and as she did, Alex got a good whiff of perry on her breath: Aunt Gertrude, it seemed, was tipsy.
She needs that liquid courage to confess her feelings!!!!
Gertrude introduces him to Church, but neither man mentions that they’ve met before.
Hamilton immediately gives Church shit for not being on the American’s side.
See what I said about him becoming more like Eliza?  Don’t be a jerk, Hamilton!  Especially since you probably know Church is on your side.
After hearing that Church is basically in the war for the money, Hamilton’s not sure what to think of him.
Angelica’s beau was either a shrewd man or a buffoon, he wasn’t sure which.
How dare you refer to Madeline’s husband like that!
They are seated for dinner and Hamilton is far away from Eliza.
“Colonel Hamilton,” Angelica said, almost before they had begun eating, “we have been seeing a great deal of you lately.  Or should I say, my sister Eliza has been seeing a great deal of you.”
Alex felt his cheeks warm.  “Not nearly as much as I would like,” he said quietly, and dipped his spoon into his stew.
Angelica asks about his intentions, but Hamilton is rightfully not into sharing his feelings with everyone at the table.
“Dear me, Eliza,” Angelica continued, turning to her sister, “I hope he has more gumption on the battlefield than he does with females, or the war is doomed.”
What a pleasant person Angelica is!
“Why, I told Mr. Church he was too old and too short for me the first time we met, and he still told everyone that he was going to marry me!”
Again, very, very pleasant girl, our Angelica.
Hamilton stands up to her and Eliza smiles.
But Alex’s gaze was caught by Angelica’s.  She had the strangest look on her face.  Of determination, mixed with chagrin.  It was as if she were determined to put him on the spot, yet she also feels guilty about it.
Hamilton figures she’s getting external pressure to be a bitch.
And Angelica goes right for bringing up their parents.  Eliza tells her she’s being too bold.
[Angelica tells Eliza] “You have never had any sense when it comes to men, and if someone else doesn’t look out for you, you will end up penniless and cooking your own food.”
It is the parents, Alex said to himself.  It must be.
“I assure you that I would cook for Miss Schuyler, if it came to that,” he said, attempting levity.
Yeah, it’s pretty funny to think about a MAN doing the cooking, amiright?
Angelica goes in on him about being poor some more.  Pretty in character for Hamilton, even though he’s sure she’s being put up to this, that he still takes the bait and defends his family.
And pretty quickly, Angelica gives up the rouse.   Lame.  This was fun.
“You must know, Colonel Hamilton, how inordinately fond we all are of you.  Even my father…”
She goes on about the background of the Schuylers, as if Hamilton isn’t well aware.
“To see my sister wedded to a man whom she loves and admires would give me nothing but joy, but you can’t possibly expect to claim her with a bag of oranges, can you?”
Eliza is clearly offended by the whole speech, which gives Hamilton some relief.
Peggy and Stephen looked embarrassed, whereas Aunt Gertrude’s eyes, when they met his, were positively heartbroken.
Someone give Gertrude a hug and some love!
But the most unhappy person at the table (save perhaps him) was clearly Angelica.
Girl, you’re willing to elope with the dude you love.  Why do you give a fuck what your parents ask you to do when it comes to your sister?  Stand up to them or tell them you’ll do it and don’t.  This doesn’t feel like it fits with her character at all.
But Hamilton is not afraid to stand up for himself and tell her exactly what he’s accomplished: from his role working for Washington to whose lips have spoken his name.  It’s good and I’m proud of him.
“Miss Schuyler,” he said then, turning back to the eldest sister, “at the risk of public hubris, may I remind you that I am the chief aide-de-camp to His Excellency, General George Washington…on his behalf and on behalf our country, I have corresponded with the representatives of no fewer than four kings, thirteen princes, and twenty-one dukes…Further, in my defense…my own name is known to every American of any distinction whatsoever…and it is by their high standards, and not by a list of names in a kirkyard, that I judge myself and expect others to judge me.”
You know what’s insane in this whole exchange though?  Eliza who won’t shut up if you ask her has not really stood up for him once!  Wouldn’t you expect her to, rather than sit there meekly?  Of all moments, this should’ve been her and Hamilton defending him.
“That’s quite an impressive roster of names, sir,” she said when he had finished.  “It sounds like my mother’s Christmas card list.”
Apparently everyone finds this hilarious and only then does Eliza say anything.
“Oh, come now, Angelica, you know Mama has only ever corresponded with two kings, and one of those was an exile from some Italian isle that is hardly larger than the Pastures,” said Eliza, setting the joke squarely back on her sister.
Apparently, everything is cool after this somehow, except Hamilton covers up that he can’t stop thinking of what Angelica reminded him: “he belonged to no one.”
Just as he’s about to leave that evening, Angelica runs into him.
“In truth, Colonel Hamilton,” she said, “you haven’t got a penny to your name, do you?  A pity, for it appears you are quite taken with my sister, and it bereaves me to say that the feeling is mutual.  Alas.”
I’m so uninterested in whatever game Angelica is playing.  She tells Eliza to go for the romance but she tells Ham it’s never going to happen and it’s just sort of rude to both of them.

So….it’s been a bit of a month, hasn’t it? Between work, and making sure that both Older and Younger Son do their school work while sitting on the couch, coming up with interesting things to have for dinner based on how picky everyone is, and a general feeling of panic around every corner, I’m exhausted. Friday I found myself teaching violin. Have I ever played violin? Nope – I played the flute, the fife, and the piano – all equally bad. But times being what they are, we do what we need to do.
And what I need to do right now is see if Hayden Christensen is an actor who just needs a better script and a better director to turn in a good performance, or if he is just a plank of wood with blue eyes. I found this gem on Prime, and just realized it’s an hour and 41 minutes – that’s quite long – but I’m determined to push on. I sat through Revenge of the Sith a few days ago and the forehead acting was seriously painful, but not as bad as the dialogue. We are, instead, going to watch Little Italy, which is basically Romeo & Juliet with pizza. (There WAS a Hallmark version of this a while ago, but this one isn’t it.  If anyone cares, THIS was it)  AND I’m watching this while Older Son is practicing his trumpet.
HC in Revenge of the Sith – you can see the beginning of the forehead acting right here!
This movie also stars Emma Roberts and Alyssa Milano, and is set in, you guessed it, Little Italy, which honestly really doesn’t look like the Little Italy I know about in Manhattan. There’s a joint narration of both our lead actors, while they have a “we were kids” background. Their fathers were best friends running the “best” pizza joint in the neighborhood. Alyssa Milano is Emma Roberts’ mom, and Danny Aiello is Hayden’s grandfather.Emma’s family has the sauce, and Hayden’s family has the sauce. Emma’s character is named Nicky, and Hayden’s is named – um, not sure yet. Anyway, it’s idyllic, and they are up for “Best Pizza” at the San Gennaro festival (which seems to be the only Italian festival in NYC).
Flash Forward to LONDON – Nicky works as a chef under Jane Seymour – who is described as a prettier, scarier, Gordon Ramsey. Nicky has a chance to win a job at a Mayfair Fast Casual restaurant, but in order to do so, she has to go home, and redo her visa. And Jane Seymour drops a bomb – she has to go back to CANADA – so this whole Little Italy takes place in Toronto? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?
Hayden’s character is named Leo – and he stayed home in FREAKING CANADA, and we find out that the two families have fought since the flashback – and now there are 2 pizza places next to each other, and they are feuding, feuding, feuding. Leo is telling his dad they have to modernize, and it’s like he told his Italian dad to put English cheddar on the pizza.  Both pizza joints have Indian co-workers, whom you KNOW will get together at the end. So far, HC is … okay. He’s very loose in the role, which is nice after being so uptight as future Darth Vadar, but he’s not setting the world on fire – that being said, this is a movie about a pizzeria. Do you really want that to be set on fire? True story, in my hometown, the owners of the “posh” Italian restaurant that was next store to the only pizzeria in town blew up their restaurant in the 80s for the insurance money, thereby robbing a small NJ town of pizza for almost a year.
Nicky comes home from London in a big hat. They head to the bar where Leo works. Their eyes meet and music starts, but you know they’re gonna hate flirt till they kiss. And after 2 shots, Leo challenges Nicky to a soccer match. Nicky has two very thirsty female friends who are mildly inappropriate for a movie what both Older and Younger Son have decided to watch with me. But now they’re playing soccer in the rain, and doing shot when either of them miss. It’s in slow motion, and there are a lot of spectators who don’t seem to mind to be watching in the rain until there’s thunder, which is good, because Leo goes in for the kiss, and then Nicky passes out.
I cry foul that the first male butt we see in this movie is Leo’s pal Luigi, a large Chinese guy who acts Italian. Nicky wakes up in Leo’s bed, and thinks she had sex with Leo, but no, Leo was a gentleman.
Both mothers hide wine in the hanging baskets of fake gerber daisies that separate the two pizzerias.
Nicky hasn’t told her family she’s only home for a visit, and not to stay. Her family immediately makes her eat pizza. And Nicky’s family did something to the pizza at Leo’s place – marijuana looks like oregano after all. And Leo is getting seriously sexually assaulted by the cops who came to break up the pot party.
Jesus is everyone in this movie hot for each other? Andrea Martin, Nicky’s grandmother, is in love with Danny Aiello, and they just met each other in a confessional at a Catholic church.
Nicky shows up at Leo’s house, just as Lisa, a flight attendant and Leo’s sometime girlfriend. Nicky gets jealous of Lisa, which, seriously girl, you’ve been gone for five years. But even though Lisa is probably naked already in Leo’s apartment, Leo still asks her out for dinner the next night.
At Luigi’s bar, both fathers meet up to insult each other and hate boast about their children. It is SO bad and so dumb. Cut to the old people, who cannot meet up in a confessional anymore, are now sitting in a Starbucks freaking out over a caramel macchiatto.
Cut to Nicky’s parents’ backyard where they are grilling. Alyssa Milano comes in saying she almost forgot the nice cannolis. Dad gives her a kiss and then says, here, take the gum (apparently she’s got bad breath) leave the cannolis. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. I wonder HOW long it took the writers of this to put that in there. And Alyssa Milano’s character has just invited some kind of sleezy Italian stereotype to keep Nicky back in Canada. Ew, stereotype just sniffed her shoe.
She’s at Leo’s house, and he’s making her dinner – yes, it’s pizza – that she just put FIGS on top of. WHAT? He lives in a dive apartment that has a pizza oven. They are flirt pizza baking. I’ve been really comfort baking these past few weeks – today I made a lemon drizzle cake and a loaf of Italian bread. But apparently this pizza is good, even with freaking figs on it.
Andrea Martin is back at church in front of a very jankety statue of Our Lady. And Danny Aiello is totally proposing to her right in front of the statue, and even though Andrea Martin looks at him with heart eyes, she says no.
Leo has a rooftop garden that is populated with lamps.
He has a desire to open an organic pizzeria. Seems weird. Now they are dancing across from each other and I do not get it, but they are so in love with each other, you guys, it’s amazing that it’s taken this long for Nicky to say “I should go.”
Poor Andrea Martin, squeezing tomatoes and pining for Danny Aiello. Danny Aiello is giving love advice to Leo, while Leo cooks his revolting fig pizza. And Danny Aiello just said “You can take the girl out of Little Italy, but you can’t take Little Italy out of the girl.” WRITERS – I’m staring at you disapprovingly over the tops of my glasses right now.
Everyone freaks out over figs on pizza, and yet Hawaiian pizza is totally being made fun of.
Andrea Martin is back at the Starbucks and she’s had like 8 caramel macchiattos. She’s trying to drown her sorrows in coffee, and Danny Aiello shows up and seems to be quoting John Lennon or something to get back in her good graces, by stating that he wants a home for the two of them where they can watch The Bachelor in bed together. Regardless of how dumb that sounds – because the true test of marriage is watching Dateline and then finding out what happened at the end because your husband stayed up to watch it while you dozed off – they love each other and get engaged.
Leo climbs a ladder to deliver pizza to Nicky in her bedroom. It’s a heart shaped pizza. Next day, they both jump on a vespa and go riding through the San Gennaro festival, eating gelato and exploding eggplant with firecrackers. They also rode through a fire hydrant and now they are back in Leo’s apartment all “I gotta get out of these wet clothes” and now we’re in for a sex montage because ha, this is NOT your friendly Hallmark movie, it’s on Prime.
Oh, wait, it’s not a montage, it’s a fade to black, and then fade in on Andrea Martin and Danny Aiello. That’s not upsetting.
Jane Seymour FaceTimes in the afterglow, reminding Nicky that she needs to do her job, and asking her if she’s been “shagging” and if there is a penis more pressing than her restaurant in Mayfair, and quite honestly, that’s funny.
Leo doesn’t know she isn’t back to stay, and she casts it up to him that he’s had a lot of girlfriends in the past five years, and she’s now going HARD into The Sad Times. Let’s see what Leo does in his own Sad Times, because I really hope we don’t get a return of forehead acting.
Old people arrange a family dinner at “Korma Sutra – a Sensual Italian Restaurant” (with a bunch of Indian carvings on the wall) where both the Montagues and Capulets sit down for a curry and they announce that Andrea Martin and Danny Aiello are seeing each other. And the tired feuding old men get freaked out, and it comes down to letting the “Best Pizza” contest in the San Gennaro festival decide who has the Best Pizza, and whoever doesn’t have the best pizza has to leave. But because tired feuding old men aren’t allowed in the contest anymore, they have to have Leo and Nicky enter instead. And Nicky says, “I’m a chef, I don’t do pizza.”
Because that’s not insulting to her entire family. But then it gets more insulting and Nicky is way more into The Sad Times.
Leo confronts his best friend Luigi about the fact that he’s really Chinese, because Luigi is his Sassy Friend who tells Leo that he’s in love with Nicky – and then we find out that Luigi is gay, so he’s extra Sassy.
This movie is taking way too long.
Pizza Competition Time. round One – they have 10 minutes to make pizza. Leo is making proccioto and melon pizza, and who knows what Chef Nicky made. But of course, they both make it to the finals, where they have to make a Pizza Margharita.  Nicky is rolling the pizza dough with a pin. I feel like that’s wrong.
The winner is Leo, because of course it is, and because we know that Nicky switched the sauces underneath the table. And then Leo makes a statement about the whole thing, but Nicky misses it because she already took a taxi to the airport. But Leo hightails it to the airport in a Vespa (which he leaves at the front entrance of the airport in clear violation of all those 9-11 rules).
But Nicky keeps getting stuck in the metal detector – just in time for Leo to make a heartfelt declaration to her from the steps overlooking the security line.
AWWWW Gay Luigi just had a meet cute with the gay Security Guard! Sassy Friends DO find love! We also discover the source of the feud (and it’s dumb) and then everyone realizes they’re being supremely dumb, and then the Angry Security Lady takes back control from these weirdos and starts moving people through the line again.
Everyone is happy and in love, and flash forward to a new restaurant owned by Leo and Nicky – it’s the wedding reception of Andrea Martin and Danny Aiello, and Gay Luigi caught the bouquet. Jane Seymour shows up and loves the pizza and wants to franchise, and the Indian sous chefs get to dance with each other, and everyone loves each other and east dessert pizza. The end.
Ok. I’ve seen this movie before in the Hallmark version, and although that one was probably filmed in Canada, it did pretend to be the US. Looking at all this pizza, now I want pizza, but we’re having lemon pepper chicken with angel hair pasta tonight. I wonder how good Canadian pizza actually is – I’m spoiled by living in NJ, where the best pizza in the US is (shut up Chicago, that is NOT pizza).
Did we answer the question : Is Hayden Christensen a good actor or not? – I think so. I think he’s … not bad. He needs a lot more help than he was EVER given in the Star Wars Prequels, and it helps when he’s not saying corny-ass dialogue like “I can overthrow the chancellor.” There was very little forehead acting in this, although a lot of forehead wrinkling, making me believe he’s a lot older than he was playing as Leo. If you’re looking for a good performance of his, go see Shattered Glass.
Was this movie good? Meh. But since we’re stuck in the house, what else are we going to do – especially now that allergy season is here on top of everything else. It was a nice diversion while my bread is baking and keeps me from wondering why my Lemon Drizzle cake didn’t rise that much – unless it’s supposed to be half the size of the loaf pan? Anyway, doesn’t matter. We’ll eat it later. And besides, that’s not the point. The point is, I watched Little Italy, just so you don’t have to.
Solving the question, did Hayden Christensen deserve the abuse Star Wars generated? All that, plus pizza, Alyssa Milano, Danny Aiello, and Canada. I watched Little Italy, Just So You Don't Have To. So....it's been a bit of a month, hasn't it? Between work, and making sure that both Older and Younger Son do their school work while sitting on the couch, coming up with interesting things to have for dinner based on how picky everyone is, and a general feeling of panic around every corner, I'm exhausted.

They Hid From the Mob for Decades. Now They Will Surface in a Film.
In 2015, Roberto Buscetta had been hiding for decades under assumed names and 11 of his closest relatives had been slaughtered by Mafia assassins when two filmmakers tracked him down in Florida, looking to chat.
His father, Tommaso Buscetta, had been a soldier in the Sicilian Mafia, the first high-ranking Mafioso to break the code of silence in the 1980s at a time when the Sicilians took omerta far more seriously than their American brethren. His father’s testimony at trials in Italy and New York had figured in the convictions of more than 400 members of the mob.
Now the filmmakers wanted Roberto Buscetta to appear on camera and talk about his father.
Really?
“Killing Tommaso Buscetta’s son would be a perfect trophy,” Roberto said, explaining his reluctance.
But he did it and so did his mother, Cristina, at the urging of the filmmakers, Mark Franchetti and Andrew Meier, whose documentary, “Our Godfather: The Man the Mafia Could Not Kill,” began streaming on iTunes on June 10. It will be featured on Netflix in September.
“Going after the seemingly impossible — finding her and the family and getting them to talk — was always the tantalizing prize,” Franchetti said
Finding the Buscettas was indeed a challenge. It took nearly two years. The immediate family had been living under adopted names in a string of different locations for more than three decades. Roberto’s stepsister Lisa, who also appears in the documentary, says she uttered the Buscetta name for the first time in her life in the film.
Meier said he contacted prosecutors, F.B.I. agents and the Drug Enforcement Administration, which oversaw Buscetta’s security and safe house. The D.E.A. was wary. Several agents who had protected Buscetta had died. Some were uninterested. Two agents who had guarded Buscetta, John Huber and Tony Petrucci, were helpful. Still, they had not been in touch with Cristina for a decade.
Meier finally sent a note in 2015 to an old email address that he was told members of the Buscetta family had used in the past. Weeks passed with no response.
Finally on April 10, 2015, Cristina responded. “I must say,’’ she wrote “that your email woke up my curiosity.”
Cristina was Tommaso Buscetta’s third wife. They met in Rio de Janeiro in 1971. He returned there in the early 1980s after a serving a prison term for drug trafficking. By his own account, he wanted no part of the bloody war being waged in Sicily at the time among factions of the Mafia, or the Cosa Nostra.
Buscetta, who grew up in Palermo, the youngest of 17 children, was the only sibling to join the Mafia. He became an influential figure who commanded respect that went beyond his rank as a soldier. Mob bosses sought his advice. He was intelligent and worldly, having lived in Brazil and Brooklyn, where he worked with the Gambino crime family.
But in 1982, Mafia hit men killed two of his sons, a son-in-law, his closest brother and a nephew in separate incidents in Palermo. The following year, after being arrested in Brazil, he agreed to cooperate with Italian and American law enforcement and signed what became a 3,000-page confession.
“For him, breaking omerta was really the hardest decision of his life because he had this sensation that he broke something that was sacred,” Cristina says in “Our Godfather.”
He testified in Palermo during the “Maxi Trial,” the largest anti-mob prosecution in history, which culminated in 1987 with the conviction of 342 Mafiosi.
Since Italy did not have a witness protection program, American authorities hid him in a safe house in New Jersey and shuttled him back and forth across the Atlantic.
“It has to be understood that during that period Buscetta was the most important, the most wanted and most endangered witness in American criminal history,” Huber, the D.E.A. agent, said in an interview.
In New York, Buscetta testified in 1985 at the “pizza connection case,” brought by Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was the United States attorney in Manhattan at the time. Seventeen people were convicted for their roles in an international drug ring.
“There was no other witness in the case who was able to describe the enterprise, identify the hierarchy and describe the goals of the organization,” said Louis Freeh, the lead prosecutor who went on to become director of the F.B.I.
Ivan S. Fisher, who represented the Mafia boss Salvatore Catalano at the trial, said. Buscetta “just oozed intelligence.”
“He played the courtroom like fiddle,” he said.
Fourteen years later, still in hiding, Buscetta died of cancer at the age of 71. He was buried under an alias in North Miami, Fla. But his story, his place in history as the Mafia’s first high-ranking informer, and the ravages he brought to the mob, and his own family, still resonated years later with Franchetti, a foreign correspondent in Moscow for the Sunday Times of London, and Meier, a journalist and nonfiction author.
Franchetti had been the producer of a 2013 documentary, “The Condemned,” about a remote Russian prison exclusively for murderers.
Now he and Meier wanted to provide a compelling, but straightforward account of Buscetta’s life, stripped of romance and populated with interviews with family members who had not spoken publicly since they disappeared in 1986.
Cristina and her son Roberto agreed to meet the filmmakers in Florida in May 2015. Roberto asked Petrucci, the D.E.A. agent who had once protected the family, to join them. Hours before they were supposed to meet, Cristina changed the meeting spot to the Ritz-Carlton, overlooking the beach in Fort Lauderdale.
“At the first meeting, Mark and Andrew gave us all kinds of assurances,” Roberto said. “When you’ve been in this business for a long time, there are certain words you want to hear. The guys came across as incredibly sincere. They were willing to bargain about everything, including whether to show our faces on camera.”
The filmmakers told Cristina and Roberto that it was difficult to make a film about a dead man with only a handful of photographs available. Might they have any family photographs, home movies, diaries?
Cristina said she had a trunk full of photos, while Roberto said he had lots of video. At a subsequent meeting, he handed them 13 DVDs, including one that showed Buscetta in a Santa Claus hat dishing out Christmas presents to the family.
“That’s when we realized we definitely had a film, a unique and intimate insight into a Mafia don and his family,” Franchetti said.
Still it took time for Cristina and Roberto to agree to go on camera. Not even their neighbors knew their real names. “There is still a risk,” Cristina Buscetta told the filmmakers. “The Mafia does not forget.”
“Security for them and us was the main issue,” Meier said. “Cristina said, ‘This is my last son.’”
The logistics were key. Meetings with family members had to be discreet and at carefully chosen locations. Filming was done at spots where the backgrounds were visually interesting, but nondescript, without identifying landmarks that would reveal the Buscettas’ location.
Still many relatives rebuffed the filmmakers. Others agreed to help but would not appear on camera.
Even Roberto, who in the film describes serving combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan under his assumed name, asked for precautions. He would not allow that name to be used in the film. He asked that his face never appear in full view.
Cristina, however, looked straight into the camera, ready to remember the man she had loved.
“We found her at the right time in her life,” Meier said. “She felt she hadn’t told the story. As she said in the film, ‘It was now or never.’”

One day I was stretching in the little space the tiny University Fitness gym allotted for such activity, and Mae happened to be there doing her Yoga. We were friends and had gone to the Puyallup fair with some mutual pals, like Lisa Yu and another personal trainer from the gym, John Tailor.
By the way, John ended up in a reality TV show called “Too Fat For Fifteen,” and ended up getting his Ph.D. and being teacher of the year in New Jersey. At the time, he liked Mae and was always hitting on her. Sorry, bud.
John Taylor in “Too Fat For 15” Reality TV
I was usually very private, but for some reason, I decided to come clean and needed to confess to someone—so I told Mae I was a homeless derelict. She took pity on me and decided to help. It just so happened that she was house-sitting for some rich doctor friends in Seattle, taking care of their dogs in their frequent absences.
She let me stay at her apartment while she was gone! Can you believe the faith of this woman? To this day, she admits she has never even thought of doing something like that before. I now get to tell people that I lived with her before we even dated. Talk about a crazy conversation starter!
I moved in and even slept in her bed (without her being there of course), while she was gone and my brand new apartment was finishing inspection. Later, when she came back, I moved to the couch as the project continued to be delayed. We had many conversations late into the night and actually got to know each other a little.
When I moved out, I asked my dad to help me build something for her as a gift. She didn’t have a good towel rack in her apartment, so we fashioned one out of wood and added some elaborate scroll saw work on the side of a tropical scene for decoration. We stayed in touch and eventually started dating.
It was near the end of my college years that decided to get back to the theater and I began auditioning for local theater on the professional level. I wanted to see where the dance training, combined with my music minor and acting training combined would take me.
It was then that the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle took note of me and made me one of their premier chorus boys off and on seasonally from about 2000 to 2005. I worked through the ranks as an Equity actor and had a few good roles as well.
My first show was Gypsy, the life of Gypsy Rose Lee, one of my favorite musicals, where I danced with a few other great performers like Louis Hobson (who has some notoriety in Seattle with his own theater and a few IMBD credits), along with Greg Allen, one of the funniest men I have ever met and the greatest tap dancer.
Gypsy at the 5th Avenue Theatre
Greg has made a life of working professionally in the northwest and rarely needs to find other jobs, other than working at a coffee shop here and there between gigs. He made that choice long ago, stuck with it, and I commend him for it. The lead in Gypsy was played by Judy Kay, a fantastic and powerful singer with a long career on Broadway, who we used to see singing in New York at the Macy’s Day Parade. Every night I used to marvel as she closed the show with high notes and a ringing vibrato that filled the halls: “Everything’s coming up roses for me and for you!” I was a regular Joe among true battle-tested professionals.

Over the years I would perform in shows like Most Happy Fella, the 5th’s 75th Anniversary Gala fundraising events, Hair (twice, where I was the psychedelic modern dancer and acrobat with a giant glow in the dark phallus that everyone obviously assumed was real), A Chorus Line, playing the role of Don, The Wizard of Oz (the hardest show to be ensemble in, with all the crazy set changes and the green unitards), Yankee Doodle Dandy, a Hairspray Promo, Singin’ in the Rain, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, where I got to back up a special show with Lucy Lawless, popular at the time for her role as Xena the Warrior Princess on TV.
Lucy was amazing, tall, beautiful and extremely gracious to us chorus boys and girls. We got to pick her up and twirl her and I was the one with the knee to the ground so she could sit on my lap as she flirted with the audience and sang.
After the show, as we left the stage door in the alley, I had never seen so many ravenous fans awaiting any performer. Even on Broadway, when I later waited for friends to get out of their shows, even the big stars did not draw these kinds of crowds. It also happened that this crowd filled the entire alley and circled out into the street and around the city block, all awaiting with bated breath the appearance of Lucy Lawless.
It was the largest number of Lesbians to ever congregate in one area at one time. We should have called the Guinness Book Of World Records, as it surely would have made the cover.
As with everyone else, Lucy was patient and gracious and took plenty of time to greet her fans and sign autographs. Poor clueless me thought it might be for us boys, and immediately checked my posture and flexed my muscles. I couldn’t understand why they never gave me or the other boys a second look. One of my coworkers had to point out to me that Lucy had a huge Lesbian following that traveled from all over to see her. We could have done a ribbon cutting ceremony of the alley and named it the New Isle of Lesbos.
We all went to dinner at Palomino’s just down the block after the show. Lucy went out of her way to raise us up and even kissed us on the cheek in front of our fans and parents just to make us look good. My uncle to this day is mesmerized by the lifestyle I lived, and everyone enjoyed the pleasant fiction that I had exotic Amazon women singers and dancers hanging all over me on a daily basis feeding me grapes.
Singing, dancing, and acting all at the same time requires a certain set of skills that relatively few people master. I was so fortunate to be allowed into this elite group of people for a short time in my life.
At the time, I had no clue how rare the opportunity or how lucky I was. I was having a blast and working hard and making more money than I had ever made in my life.
During college, I had tried a ton of entrepreneurial ways to make money, including starting a jewelry business, buying “tiny little ads” in newspapers, and even buying and selling real estate. I was constantly reading the papers and thinking outside of the box and going to seminars. It was an incredible time of dreaming and conquest for me.
My friend Gary called me an “Artist-Entrepreneur,” and I began to try to live up to it. I looked into starting a dance school, started an Internet import business before everyone else was doing it, and also took jobs for local ballet companies playing the prince in the Nutcracker or something when I wasn’t working at the 5th Avenue Theatre. I did a couple of runs with a theater on Vashon Island, where the parents and patrons of the theater would house me and feed me while I did the show. I lived out of a backpack and didn’t need much at all to live, so I was very happy.
Also beginning around 2001 I moved to New York City to try my hand there. When I wasn’t in Seattle working for the 5th, I was on an airplane. I found a scholarship that helped with the costs and decided to maximize it.
I stayed with a college friend, Ryan Jones, or “Jones” as we all called him, who had graduated from the UW drama program and married another artist, thereby landing in the Burrough of Queens. Jones was running a non-profit and starting this own theater projects. He now runs a new dance and performance art physical theater company with his new wife in Los Angeles.
It was a culture shock for me, but very good. I rode the trains and subways and lived in spare rooms and on couches for months at a time. I took dance classes alongside New York City Ballet dancers (that could mop the floor with me) and singing lessons from an amazing old sage called Maria Farnsworth who trained New York City Opera singers. I auditioned and honed my craft. I was eating, breathing, and sleeping New York and I loved the Big Apple and all its glory.
I ended up sleeping on a futon at my college roommate, Michael Bilikas’ pad in Greenwich Village. Michael was at this point at NYU dental school, and still on his phone all the time. His place was $1,700 per month for a tiny studio apartment in the early 2000’s, and the place was hopping all night. The only hour of quiet was between the hours of 3 am and 4 am, when the nightlife finally died down, and right before the garbage trucks came to clean up to start the day all over again.
A week before 9-11 I was in still in New York, preparing to fly to the gulf side of Florida to visit with my parents who were on vacation to see my aunt’s new place. She had moved to start over and was tired of the rain and cold in Washington State.
Around that time, Mae had decided on her own to come visit me in our tiny palace of squalor in Manhattan. I was too dense to admit it to myself at the time, but our relationship was going somewhere and she was pursuing me. I had long ceased to pursue anyone and was happy with my only-child alone time, and single laissez-faire lifestyle. I was focused on my fanciful career pursuing the elusive stage.
Mae and I did a little tour and ended up at the twin towers and then decided to have lunch in the financial district. I was comfortable getting around but didn’t really know that area. I decided to take her to lunch, but we couldn’t find even a lowly sandwich place that I didn’t have to take out a mortgage to afford.
I ended up putting an over-priced soup and sandwich on my credit card and tried to be chivalrous. I wanted to stay in New York City, and I secretly hoped Mae would just stay, but we both knew I didn’t have a real job or any kind of financial security to speak of, and we all know how attractive a man is and how secure his lady feels when the best he can offer is a futon in a dental student’s apartment.
I flew out from NYC and directly into the airport that we later found out the terrorists flew out from. I remember how laid back and relaxed that airport was then. The trip to Florida was short, but again reminded me how much I love the sunshine and palm trees.
As soon as I got back to Seattle we saw on TV a plane crashing into the twin towers. We were all in shock and completely stunned by the tragedy. The little airport in Florida and every other airport in the country decided to start increasing the security after that.
Life After High School: Chapter 9 Vagabond One day I was stretching in the little space the tiny University Fitness gym allotted for such activity, and Mae happened to be there doing her Yoga.
