March Kirby Birthdays!

Head's up, everyone! Following that zany little leap year day known as February 29th, we'll be heading into March, the month with the highest amount of Kirby Game/Character Birthdays! Everyone who wants to draw, write, or otherwise celebrate, mark your calendars!!

K so I decided to talk about the residents of Star Town in my “Hero of the Stars” AU since they’re important to know (I don’t consider Meta Knight or the Meta-Knights town residents since they basically live on the Halberd here so yeah I’m not sharing more on them yet. Same with the residents of Castle Dedede). Call this not-final or anything, just my general idea for the town cast (main and side characters alike):

Adeleine

-Local young girl

-Apprentice of Vividria

-Best friends with Marx

-Positive/Optimistic

-Tries her best

-One of the few sane people in the cast

Marx

-Local jester

-Prankster

-Tricky boi

-Loves space and magic stuff

-Uses his hat as hands (don’t ask I think it works in Star Allies)

-Almost always seen on his beach ball

Bandana Waddle Dee

-Technically a resident of Castle Dedede but he lived in the town for a while so-

-Good boi

-Loyal and friendly

-Lots of emotional attachment to his bandana, will have an existential crisis without it

-Basically the #1 Waddle Dee of the place and the closest to the king (though the king loves all of his Waddle Dees unconditionally [granted, he’s a huge tsundere for them and just about everyone in existence, but-)

-Can be very shy and timid

Magolor

-Local egg shopkeeper

-Halcandra kinda collapsed in on itself here and the Lor is never seen here so he is shrouded in mystery

-Greedy egg who wants your money

-Sells stuff from around the galaxy (egg has been places)

-Would probably be really OP if I allowed him to be plot-important

Chef Kawasaki

-Restaurant owner except he can actually cook well here

-Has employed Pitch, ChuChu, and Nago to help with running his restaurant (mainly, they c l e a n )

-Very nice bean man

-He is trying his best every day

Rick

-Fuzzball hamster

-Loves his girlfriend (Pick, who lives in Fruity Forest) with all his heart

-Nice bean who is happy to give children piggyback rides

-Best buds with Kine and Coo ‘cus Animal Friends

-Strong boi (or at least tries to be)

Coo

-Librarian birb

-Yes he runs a library here fite meh-

-Smart birb

-He is the kind-yet-strict adult

-Out of all the animal friends, he holds all the brain cells

Kine

-Carefree fish man

-Loves his wife (Mine)

-Lives in a nearby lake with said wife

-Yes he is like the games and novels where he can not die on land because magic fish

-Would be the first to cry during the apocalypse

Pitch

-Strong birb

-Kinda like Tokkori but not a d-bag

-No-nonsense yet still does not contain brain cells

-Loves his mama (Pitch Mama, never forget her)

ChuChu

-Looking for love

-IDK anything about Nyupun so just pretend they live together and are either housemates or dating

-Secretly very vindictive and stuff but in a comedic way

Nago

-Laid-back boi

-Does some usual cat stuff like sleeping in impossible positions (IDK I heard cats do that, I don’t have a cat)

-Has a girlfriend (Shiro) who lives all the way in Iceberg (so far away from where he lives)

Knuckle Joe

-Best buds with Burning Leo

-Wants to be strong

-Willing to throw hands with infants

-Thinks he’s way cooler than he actually is

-Insists on the “Knuckle” part of his name (don’t call him just “Joe”)

Burning Leo

-A lot like Knuckle Joe except more chill

-Cool kid

-Has probably committed arson at least once but he is child and doesn't know it’s a crime

-Kinda mean sometimes tbh

(Doctor) Chemitory

-Like Yabuki from the show but he actually knows what he’s doing

-Not much to him other than he nice

Birdon

-Daredevil kid

-Obsessed with Dyna Blade (who’s, like, a legend or myth here)

-Has nearly died at least seven times over the course of his life

-Energetic birb boy

Bio Spark

-Tries to be cool ninja child but he’s really just insecure

-Needs a lesson in honor

-Kinda like Knuckle Joe and Burning Leo fused into one

-Doesn’t actually know how to do ninja stuff

Gooey

-Later addition to the cast (by that I mean he becomes art of it at, like, episode 15)

-Was abandoned by the other Dark Matters ‘cus he’s defective

-Really nice and has existential crises on occasion

-Bean.

-Has a habit of licking people or things he likes. Creeps people out on occasion but he means well.

Vividria

-Adeleine’s mentor in art

-Cheerful lady

-Hasn’t seen her sisters in years (yes this comes into an episode)

-Very social and talkative

Gim

-Runs a toy store

-Acts like Dippy Fresh or something. I dunno. He is the 90s incarnate.

-Kinda annoying but at least he’s not a jerk.

-Trying to be hip with the kids ‘cus he wants to see them smile but doesn’t know how to appeal to them.

Mine

-Kine’s wife

-Doesn’t get to appear much but basically acts the way she does in the “Save the Rainbow Islands!” official novel

Nyupun

-Probably not seen much

-Possibly ChuChu’s boyfriend, maybe just her best friend, not even the wiki can decide

NESP

-Local fortune-teller

-Mysterious and kinda mischievous

-Not very social outside of business stuff

-Somehow very accurate

-Probably has a PhD in something

TAC

-Probably has a rivalry with the Squeaks

-Commits petty theft

-No one knows where he lives so he may not even be a resident of Star Town

-Loves soft, cozy things

Poppy Bros. Jr.

-Runs fireworks store with Poppy Bros Sr. (older brother) (store also sells to places outside the town. Probably would’ve gone out of business otherwise. Some places have high demands for fireworks. They have to send the orders through the mail)

-Rambunctious kid, loves to blow stuff up

-Would probably commit arson if he didn’t have a conscience… though even that may not be enough to stop him

Poppy Bros. Sr.

-Life of the party

-A lot like his little bro except more mature

-Can probably play some kind of musical instrument pretty well

Something I worked on most of last month, a full set of Kirby playing cards! I ordered the cards online (the bulk of them are going to be used for making my own Shovel Knight Joustus cards but I got a LOT of blank cards so) and did the artwork in sharpie, the only thing that didn’t smudge or erase off of them. I tried to include every single dream friend and helper from throughout the series, Capsule J the original excepting. Aside from Magolor and Marx who couldn’t be anything but Jokers, every single dream friend is a face card. There’s also a handful of non-helpers, since there weren’t enough helpers to fill every card and I decided to go with enemies that were either pretty classic (like Walky or Bomber) or just ones I like (Cool Spook may give one of the worst abilities, but it’s a Cool Spook, it has to be here!)

...Noddy shares a suit/number combo with Chilly because, uh, whoops, when I first made these I somehow lost track of Chilly, so Noddy was given a spot in the Stars suite. After I’d made the whole deck I realized my mistake, eventually decided on giving Chilly their own card, and booted Noddy to being a spare wildcard (tho they’re still present on Chilly’s card, they’re not completely abandoned in the main set).

The suits are Stars, Candies, Swords, and Hearts! I initially toyed with having a villain suit with a Dark Matter eye as the symbol, or having a Dream suit since dreams are a recurring motif, but I didn’t really want to draw too many bad guys when there’s pals to draw instead and what the heck would a Dream suit’s symbol even be that wouldn’t overlap with Stars?

The four main characters obviously had to be the aces, and that shaped the suits somewhat, or at least cemented Swords as a Kirby card suit.

The Star suit contains Kirby, his closest/oldest friends (Animal Friends, Gooey, Ribbon), and characters with stars in their design (Prince Fluff, Simirror, Parasol Waddle Dee, Starman, Vividra, etc), and a few miscellaneous pals who just seemed to fit.

The Candies suit contains King Dedede, enemies long associated with the penguin (Whispy Woods, Sir Kibble, Waddle Doo, Poppy Bros Jr.), characters either greedy or just associated with food (Daroach, Susie, TAC, Chef Kawasaki), and a few others who didn’t belong anywhere else more than here (Dyna Blade, Wester, Cool Spook, etc). Dyna Blade is the Queen of Candies instead of an actual dream friend because just I don’t like Susie so she’s the Jack of Candies instead.

The Swords suit is Meta Knight and anybody with a pointy weapon or just somewhat martial (and also Bomber). Sword & Blade Knight share a card because they’re interchangeable in Super Star; I almost put them on the 2 of Swords because of that, but they seemed more important than a measly 2 so they wound up on the 7. I tried to pose them like the classic suicide king card art but their arms are too stubby for that.

The Hearts suit is Bandana Dee, sentimental folks (Taranza), and other good who didn’t fit another suit more strongly (Adeleine, the other Animal Friends, Shadow Kirby).

In each suit the 10 card has another pal with a larger role than just a helper (Prince Fluff, the Meta-Knights, Shadow Kirby, and also Whispy Woods because he’s a friend of Dedede and has been in every single Kirby game, I had to include the guy), while the 9 cards have the mini-boss helpers. Past that the rankings are based on who I like the most, albeit with non-helper enemies always being ranked lower than actual helpers.
