(Twisted Destinies AU)

Originally, I had Luigi knowing about his missing twin. However, I think I'm going to change that. This was what I had in mind:

Carlo and Mia (my names for the parents) lived in the "real world", before accidentally stumbling into the Mushroom Kingdom. They decided to settle there, and chose to have children via stork. However, the stork only brought one of the twins, and it was deduced that the other baby had been stolen. They became scared, and took baby Luigi back to their own world. He was raised in Donklyn City, never knowing the truth about his birth or his missing sibling.

So when Luigi meets Mario for the first time, he's very confused. Why does this guy look so much like him? Why do the Darklands, the place Mario lives, look exactly like the place he kept seeing in his childhood nightmares (the nightmares he had always been told not to worry about)?

Toadsworth, who knew Carlo and Mia, explains everything to him. Luigi confronts his parents after returning home, and they confirm it. He feels hurt and angry. Not only did he have a twin this entire time, but his mysterious lightning powers, the thing that had caused him so much bullying and trauma his entire life, was probably related to him being from a magical land. He had grown up alone, in a world where he didn't belong, while his brother had been left behind in a dangerous place. Needless to say, this puts a strain in his relationship with his parents for a while, and helps solidify his decision to move to the Mushroom Kingdom. (They'll reconcile, but that will take some time.)
