Microfic asks, for Pillars: "one chance"?
Endless blue, as far as the eye could see. Blue water. Blue sky. The blue tinge creeping up his fingertips.
Rekke had shivered at first, but now his teeth had finally stopped their chattering. The water had been so cold before, but now… Had the sun warmed it? If only his fingers would listen better, and hold on to the crate…
His thoughts swam with the waters.
Endless blue, sky and sea becoming one in the distance. The first person to travel past the storms, to bring the word of God… Was there anyone to hear it?
It would be a particular kind of joke, would it not, to send one like him out beyond the bounds of all the maps, only to arrive and find nothing?
Despite himself, Rekke smiled weakly. He lay his head down on the crate and closed his eyes against the vast blue nothing, and tried to dream.
He dreamt that a shadow appeared on the horizon. Of sky and sea separating once more, the dark shape parting them. Drawing nearer.
Can it be…? God… Give me this chance. One chance…
The shadow drew closer, festooned with masts and sails and flags in bizarre shapes. Only in dreams did he have to bargain so much with his arm just to convince it to raise and wave. Only in dreams did his voice refuse him outright.
A rope ladder, unwinding like a sea serpent. A splash in the water beside him. Strong hands hauling him up that ladder, onto the deck. Strange sounds, voices, noises – his dreams spoke in a strange tongue, and he could not understand.
They released him, though, and he fell onto hands and knees. He could have cried. Maybe, when he woke, he would.
