EVERY TIME i try to explain how read across america choosing to step back from its heavy association with dr. suess while still respectfully acknowledging his impact on fostering literacy in children (and many schools following suit after thoughtful consideration) is fundamentally different from governmental officials (oh, say, governors or senators or whatever) DEMANDING that public libraries remove books from their collections, have administration resign, or otherwise no longer receive funding—

#i am going to hurt someone i swear to god #(obviously this post is about my mother of course it is)#(she’s still SO pissy about a facebook post one of her former coworkers made about read across america day last year)#(the post was reactionary and offered an individual’s interpretation of school policy that my mother DOES NOT have access to)#(meanwhile people are actually gonna lose their jobs or the already-struggling libraries are gonna be further hurt bad by a few parents who #go to high up governmental officials to complain because i guess they can’t keep an eye on their own kids reading?)#yeah obviously i am extremely extremely angry because the library is going to HURT over some itty bitty baby-minded people #do you know who hurts in a community when libraries hurt?#i could list them out but oh yeah that’s right they’re all people who aren’t straight cis abled white upper middle class #so their lives do mean nothing (:#i’m still scared even in best-case if the ala office of intellectual freedom gets involved #because i have beautiful friends who i dearly love who are queer who work in libraries
