⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀a play on the words glitch and utopia, glitchtopia is the debut studio album from NO SPIN's leader na minjun, showcasing himself in the sole spotlight with not only his rapping abilities, but his raw vocals as well. minjun is no stranger to releasing music and has released multiple works in the past for the fans, but glitchtopia marks the rapper's first official release. the album released on july 20th at 6pm kst, followed by the music video for the title track VIRTUAL INSANITY, showcasing minjun in a vibrant, futuristic neon city — perfectly matching the addictive, flashy hip-hop vibes off of the entire album. ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀the album consists of seven tracks, all dripping in minjun's iconic style and flow that only the no spin rapper has managed to pull off. unabashedly being himself for this album in not only his sound, glitchtopia addresses the pressures of not only fame but also love, and lack thereof it, how it feels to be lost despite having everything, and themes of losing your confidence.

i think what will ALWAYS always destroy me about no spin is the fact that the original members never got to actually enjoy the fruits of their labour. THEY were the ones that struggled for years, that faced the constant threat of disbandment, that were chewed out by the company everyday for not delivering enough, constantly harassed online for being flops, dancing till their feet bled and they dropped from exhaustion, only for it to NEVER be enough. the amount of times minjun had to have conference meetings with the company, get berated for an hour, and come home to his members with a smile on his face and try to tell them things were okay??? that THEY’D be okay???? and then when they finally made it big, they only got a taste of the glitter and gold before they died and it was all ripped away. but jiwoon? he gets to just keep riding on their success, and now he gets to use their struggles and twist it into his own sob story, to be this underdog, tragic figure in media — despite not knowing the actual hell the core four faced before his addition. what it truly feels like to fail

   absolutely breaks my heart thinking about the fact that the only one who really got to enjoy the fame of no spin was jiwoon himself. he wasn’t there in the years of struggle and the constant overhanging dread of disbandment, the constant pressure to do better or everything was for nothing, thinking everything was your fault because the group couldn’t break the charts. the constant harrasement from the company, seeing in real time the love for their projects getting cut shallower and shallower.

   they owe all of their success to jiwoon, and only found it because he was added to the roster. even after getting everything they wanted, everything they worked their blood sweat and tears for, there was the constant thought lingering in the background — are we gonna fail again ? how quickly can this all just slip from our fingertips ? even after their overwhelming immediate rise in fame, the original members only get to enjoy all their hard work finally paying off for TWO YEARS, a shorter amount of time in comparison to the years that they struggled, before the fire claimed their lives. who knew it wasn’t failure & disbandment they had to fear in the coming years, but death itself.

     —  the  lights  of  his  life,  minjun  is  proud  to  say  that  he’s  raised  these  girls  and  did  a  pretty  damn  good  job  at  it  too.  he  was  there  for  them  when  their  mother  wasn’t  able  to,  cooking  their  suppers  and  tucking  them  into  bed  at  night,  putting  his  own  childhood  on  the  back  burner  just  to  make  sure  they  were  okay.  to  this  day,  minjun  always  tries  to  reach  out  to  them  at  least  once  a  day,  much  closer  to  them  than  he  currently  is  with  his  mother.  

     —  having  followed  in  her  brother’s  footsteps,  youngmi  is  currently  a  trainee  and  is  set  to  debut  in  a  five  piece  girl - group  any  day  now.  not  wanting  her  to  suffer  to  the  same  extent  he  did  as  a  trainee,  minjun  takes  care  of  most  of  her  debts,  but  only  if  she  works  hard.  hyunae,  much  more  content  with  a  life  out  of  the  spotlight,  is  studying  abroad  in  canada  with  finacial  help  from  her  brother,  but  only  in  return  for  good  grades  and  making  sure  she  stays  out  of  trouble.

     —  in  the  events  of  his  death,  youngmi  only  worked  herself  harder,  vowing  to  carry  her  brother’s  legacy  on  her  shoulders  and  to  not  let  her  brother  be  forgotten  for  the  incredible  artist  that  he  was.  the  twins  were  in  charge  of  his  funeral,  their  mother  too  distraught  over  the  loss  of  her  only  son,  and  without  his  presence,  they  truly  felt  what  the  burden  he  carried  was  like.  they  both  wear  a  necklace  with  his  ashes  in  it,  accented  with  one  inital  of  his  N M  rings.

    listening to as the world caves in and thinking of the fire that claimed no spin. minjun at the true peak of his leadership as the boys huddle around him and he tries to keep them all calm in the situation, util they’ve all accepted their fate and they only have each other, that this is truly where it ends — no spin ends with the four boys that started it all, just as it always should’ve been.

one of minjun’s other staple accessories is the fact that he LOVES wearing rings !!! he thinks it’s such a neat expression of self and he’s literally got an entire collection. he always wears a pair of NM rings on his middle and ring fingers, and loves to stack and mix and match the rings on his other fingers. it also gives him something to fiddle with if he’s nervous.

                    ↳   no  spin  was  a  popular  south  korean  boy - band  formed  by  mightee  one  entertainment  introduced  in  february  2015.  the  group  consisted  of  four  original  members,  joined  by  hak  ji - woon  in  early  2017 ;  minjun,  jaesung,  taemin,  and  xiyang.  no  spin  debuted  on  february  5th,  2015  with  their  debut  single  waiting  4  u.  in  an  unforutnate  turn  of  events,  the  four  orignal  no  spin  members  perished  in  a  studio  fire  on  january  19th,  2019  —  leaving  jiwoon  as  their  only  surviving  member  of  this  beloved  group.

               minjun  doesn’t  have  a  very  specific  style  when  it  comes  to  the  stage,  except  for  the  long  coats  and  capes  you  can  usually  see  him  donning.  at  first  it  was  just  stylistic  choice,  until  eventually  minjun  had  become  so  dependant  on  the  accessory  being  a  staple  part  of  his  stage  character,  the  stylists  began  to  incorporate  it into  all  of  the  comebacks  and  stages.  he's a very supersticious person and believes his coat is what makes him HIM. it  acts  as  a  shield,  a  symbol  of  his power and character,  and  most  importantly —  it  is  what  seperates  minjun  the  idol  from  minjun  the  person.

        KWON  EUNSOO  ,  45  ,  HAIRDRESSER 

          minjun’s  mother  eunsoo  is  currently  a  hairdresser  at  a  family  owned  salon  back  home  in  daegu.  when  he  was  a  bit  younger,  she  also  used  to  work  as  a  housekeeper  and  a  waitress,  but  ever  since  minjun  made  it  big  and  started  shouldering  more  of  the  finacial  load,  his  mother  left  the  two  professions.

          minjun  was  a  complete  accident  —  his  mother  was  on  the  way  to  becoming  a  classical  pianist  and  had  no  intentions  of  having  kids  anytime  soon.  she  was  wanted  by  the  korean  national  symphony  orchestra,  held  in  high  regard  for  her  amazing  piano  skills  at  such  a  young  age  —  but  she  had  to  give  it  all  up  to  become  a  stay  at  home  mother.  minjun  wasn’t  unwanted  per  say,  but  there  was  definitely  the  resentment  eunsoo  held  towards  him  for  halting  her  music  career.  but  she  was  raising  him  with  the  love  of  her  life,  so  surely  everything  would  be  alright.

          minjun  longs  for  the  days  when  he  was  little  and  he’d  sit  on  his  mother’s  knee  and  learn  the  piano  from  her  talented  fingertips.  things  would  change  drastically  when  minjun’s  father  passed  away,  the  main  bread - winner  of  the  house,  eunsoo  was  forced  to  give  up  being  a  stay  at  home  mom  to  now  take  on  a  multitude  of  jobs  to  provide  for  her  three  kids. 

          minjun,  only  eleven  years  old  at  the  time,  would  have  to  step  up  to  the  plate  to  take  care  of  his  younger  sisters.  he’d  see  his  mother  once  in  the  morning  before  school,  and  then  as  soon  as  the  kids  got  home,  it  was  minjun’s  job  to  take  care  of  youngmi  and  hyunae.  he’d  remember  the  meals  his  mother  made  and  would  try  to  replicate  them,  or  they’d  be  eating  convenience  store  ramyeon  for  the  third  day  in  a  row  because  it  was  something  easy  he  couldn’t  fuck  up.  he’d  do  their  laundry,  he’d  clean  the  house,  he’d  help  his  sisters  with  the  cleanup  following  a  bedwetting  incident,  he  was  the  mother  that  was  too  busy  working  all  the  time.

          minjun  doesn’t  blame  his  mother,  how  could  he  ?  it  wasn’t  her  fault  her  husband  died,  and  it  wasn’t  her  fault  that  she  had  to  put  her  grief  on  the  backburner  while  trying  to  keep  her  family  afloat.  but  there  is  still  a  sense  of  resentment  on  minjun’s  side  for  having  to  grow  up  too  quickly,  to  be  okay  for  his  little  sisters.  he  couldn’t  process  his  own  grief  or  just  be  a  kid  without  worrying  how  he  would  care  of  youngmi  and  hyunae  at  home.  he’d  stay  up  late  in  hopes  of  seeing  his  mom  if  only  for  a  brief  moment,  but  she’d  brush  his  affections  off  and  claim  she  was  tired  before  retiring  to  her  room.  he  just  wanted  somebody  to  take  care  of  him,  since  he  spent  all  his  time  taking  care  of  his  sisters.  he  just  wanted  his  mom  again.

          she’d  guilt  minjun  into  getting  a  job  as  early  as  he  could,  a  paid  under  the  table  job  and  anything  he  made  would  go  directly  into  her  pocket.  if  minjun  tried  to  protest,  she’d  spin  it  onto  his  head  that  he  didn’t  care  for  his  family,  when  that  couldn’t  be  further  from  the  truth.  now  basically  in  the  same  boat  as  his  mother,  minjun  would  start  to  fall  behind  in  his  own  studies  from  working  and  being  a  parent.

          after  minjun  was  scouted,  eunsoo  saw  the  possibility  for  her  son  to  get  the  fame  that  she  was  denied  —  wanting  to  live  vicariously  through  him,  and  the  aspect  of  the  money  he  could  bring  home  if  he  made  it  big,  she’d  urge  him  to  go  to  the  audition  and  chase  after  his  dreams.

          minjun  is  not  as  close  to  his  mother  as  he  used  to  be,  sending  money  back  home  out  of  a  feeling  of  obligation.  she  was  the  one  who  made  him  go  to  the  mightee  one  audition  all  those  years  ago,  so  he  feels  he  owes  everything  to  her,  that  she’s  entitled  to  his  hardwork  simply  because  she’s  his  mother.  even  when  minjun  wasn’t  making  much  when  no  spin  was  severely  struggling,  she  still  requested  almost  every  and  any  paycheck  minjun  got.  

         after  no  spin  blew  up,  she  started  demanding  more  and  more  from  him,  and  minjun  would  just  give  her  anything  she  asked  for,  because  didn’t  she  deserve  it  ?  his  mother  had  gone  through  so  much,  she  deserved  the  break  minjun  could  give  her.  now  dependant  on  his  money  and  fame,  she’s  certainly  not  the  woman  minjun  remembers,  the  woman  who  kissed  his  cuts  and  taught  him  his  endless  love  for  music.  his  fame  is  hers,  letting  her  live  the  luxury  she  should’ve  had  minjun  never  been  born  in  the  first  place.
