selvin & rosario are not good parents, but adeleine clearwater knows they’re adopted from day 1 & more than that: she knows how they are wanted.

growing up reveals that this isn't enough by itself - where selvin and rosario made sure they felt desperately, intently wanted, penelope made adeleine feel loved. unconditionally. where tempest would look into the eyes of their parents are see herself reflected as a status symbol, as something that could elevate their position, penelope's eyes reflected back something so much more human.

penelope is the face they looked out for at their first summer league quidditch game & penelope is the loudest voice in the crowd, cheering & screaming with more enthusiasm than anyone else. penelope was the hand to hold & the warm hug that made everything else in the world seem inconsequential, that banquished any fears.

one of my favourite headcanons with penelope & tempest that i'm not sure if i've talked about outside of my own head is that when tattered covers was still in development ( when there weren't really any books on the shelves yet & they were waiting for a decorator to tidy up the tired walls, and all that they'd managed to move in was a sofa ) tempest & penelope fell into a habit of meeting on a sunday afternoon with a cup of tea, curled up on the sofa and had a catch - up for the week. & this continued up until the present, even if they'd seen each other at a different point in the week. even if there wasn't really anything new to say to each other : many, many afternoons bled into evenings with tempest led down, feet kicking over the edge of the sofa, as penelope chatted about something interesting they'd read about / read aloud from her new favourite book of the week.

i ALSO have very very vague thoughts about the biological aspect of family & what this means to tempest but a lot of my thoughts come courtesy of merry lestrange beloved </3

my assumptions ( without tons and tons of thought , which i am working on ) are that tempest is aware of who her father is, but may not have even met him ? maybe a handful of times, probably never had a meaningful conversation. i doubt there's much pride nor shame there, consciously it's something they have worked to be indifferent to because they don't want it to be a defining characteristic of who they are ( which... is likely inevitable to be the case ).

i want to delve further into her biological mother / that side of the family, but at the moment i like the mystery ... i might make a wc or two at some point for extended family because that could be fun !
