Canon

A Sentinel is someone who has hyper-acute senses, acute to the point of dangerous “zoning out”

A Guide is someone who prevents “zoning” because of empathetic or psychic abilities

Mundane - someone with normal senses

Zoning out - getting hyper fixated on something i.e. like on the smell of blood

Non-canon (although most class it as canon since 90% haven’t seen the show)

Facts about both Sentinels & Guides (everything mentioned below is based around the LOTR/Hobbit verse so alter if needed)

Most tend to work in occupations where they can use their abilities to help people. This would be like: the Rangers, soldiers, healers etc.

95% of Sentinels & Guides start coming online gradually between 10 & 20 years old. This allows them to learn about their abilities in a less dangerous setting

The remaining 5% of Sentinels & Guides come online instantaneously, normally due to serious or life threatening danger

Typically the Dúnedain, Elves and Dwarves gain the most Sentinels & Guides, for they tend to be the wanderers

Most Sentinel/Guide pairings are within their own races, either romantic or platonic

There are some who have found their Guide/Sentinel in another race, although this is very rare

Facts about Sentinels

Sentinels can range from being online with only one sense i.e. Hearing to all five - Touch, Hearing, Smell, Sight & Taste

Some sentinels are able to pull themselves out of a light zone but most tend to fixate (zone) to a point that could become dangerous or fatal if not pulled out of it

Warriors, fighters, leaders - rarely found working in a place of healing as their skills are more useful elsewhere

Can be possessive and many aren't a fan of being alone

Facts about Guides

Are just as, if not more, dangerous than Sentinels due to their empathy

Normally healers or working in a occupation that allows them to utilise their empathy

Many young Guides are buffered by their family members until they either find their Sentinel or their mental shields are strong enough to not be overwhelmed by their empathy

Racial Differences

There are very few Sentinels within the Shire - most are within the Took family to no surprise. Although the Fell and Long Winters brought a lot more Hobbits online as Sentinels

However one is rarely far from a Guide and it is rare that they will leave any Sentinel in distress, no matter the race

Dwarves are the opposite to the Hobbits, for they have more Sentinels than Guides

Unlike the Men and Elves, most Dwarf Sentinels don't need a Guide to manage their senses.

Dwarves with 4 or 5 senses aren't common but they are most at risk of falling into a zone and needing a strong enough Guide to pull them back out

The Lost Voice of a Guide

For: Open Muse: Hal Verse: Tolkien Crossover with the Sentinel Prompt: ❝why the disguise? who are you?❞

  Sentinels and Guides were not new to Middle Earth. Everyone knew they existed but it was mostly the Dunedain, Elves and Dwarves who actually came online. It was usually a gradual process between 10 and 20, giving them a chance to learn about their abilities. But for a few people, the process was instantaneous and normally, it involved being in life threatening danger. Hal of the Northern Dúnedain had been one such person, for she had come online when she was just six years old.

  Hal had decided to go solo on this particular mission and had prepared for it extensively, due to the location. Both she and Aragorn had spent hours working through what information they had on the Eastern lands and pouring over the copies of maps that Faramir had sent them from Gondor. Trying to minimize the risks, although it would always there and both knew it. That showed in the way that the younger Sentinel point blank refused to leave her alone for too long, before she left.

  However neither of them had either planned for or taken into account that the dark eyed Commander would have a couple of unwanted tagalongs in the form of bored Ranger trainees. It wasn’t difficult for her to figure out who was following her as they weren’t being very quiet- and she knew pretty much all of the Rangers. Without turning around and taking the two barely 16 year olds back to more familiar lands, Hal had no choice but to let them come. 

  Yet Rhûn was not a land where any Rangers were particularly welcome and it hadn’t taken long for the younger Dúnedain to attract unwanted attention. A situation that was only solved when Hal gave herself up in exchanges for the others being allowed to go home.

  Hal wasn’t entirely sure how long it had been since the exchange, having been transferred between groups of Easterlings. Until finally ending up with a travelling band of Easterling Marauders, who were heading towards the Iron Hills and the lands beyond. He was just thankful that being gender-fluid meant he could easily switch between acting female to acting like he was a male. But the silent Ranger knew that they possibly wouldn’t get as far as the leader might had hoped. Not with the way that the Dwarves tended to work. At least, that was what he hoped.

  His voice had faded from months of disuse, although the Easterners had taken full usage of his fighting abilities. Because it was rather obvious that he was not from Rhûn, Hal was allowed to hide his identity with a hooded cloak and partly allowed to keep his weapons while on the move. But given that he didn’t actually want to fight those who’s kin he called friends, he stayed back until the fight had ended.

  “Why the disguise? Who are ye?” One of the Dwarves asked, still prepared to fight but holding back for now. They had quickly noticed that this wasn’t one of the normal Easterlings, not with the way that the Man had kept away from the fighting. Some shifted uneasily when he dropped to one knee but it soon came apparent that it was only to write in the dirt. Many of the Iron Hill Dwarves rarely had contact with those of the Rangers but they all knew who Polaris was. 

  For letters had been sent far and wide across the last two years, asking both Dwarves, Elves and Men to be on the lookout for the missing Dúnedain Guide. And now, he had been found. Safe, alive and... utterly silent. The patrol glanced between each-other for a moment while the Ranger pulled his hood down and quietly followed them back to their camp, relaxing slightly for the first time in months.

  Once again, letters and ravens flew. Only this time it was good news for the most part, although the letter to the Ranger Chieftain had a injuries note attached to it and a warning that Hal needed medical help the Dwarves could not properly provide.

She didn't turn to look at the other Ranger not surprised that he had managed to find her in the ruins of Ost Gorthad. There were very few people who could wander the Barrow-downs and not get killed or lost in the mists. Most Sentinels and Guides preferred to stay away from the area, for it played tricks on their senses and empathy.

For Hal though, the Barrow-downs had always been a place of safety. The spirits and walking skeletons didn't mind her presence as she was always visiting. But that wasn't the same for Aragorn. She turned after a moment to face him, reaching out with her empathy to shield his mind from the tricks of the mists.

"Yes it is. I don't want anyone else as my Sentinel, Strider."

Something was coming.

  The former Ranger didn't need her abilities to tell her that much- or the fact that it was related to the former residents of the Lonely Mountain. Although banned from returning to the North Downs, she never lost contact with anyone living there. Mainly because Saeradan and Candaith had threatened to send Hannar after her if she stopped writing, much to said Dwarf's amusement.

  Seeing Hal up on the Bell Tower didn't surprise many of those within Lake-town. It was the highest point in the town, providing her with an almost clear view of the surrounding land and lake. And she knew that if she turned, Erebor the Lonely Mountain, would be seen towering above them all. Yet it was in the direction of the forest, formerly known as the Greenwood, that her blank gaze turned.

Durin's Day was nearly upon them and with it, came change.

  Whether that change would be good or bad, Hal didn't know. But a warning in one of her adopted Dwarf father's letters had got her to preparing for the worst. It wasn't just her though, most of the Sentinels and Guides in Lake-town had followed suit. Under her direction, they had made parts of Dale stable and secure, giving the citizens somewhere safe to go to should the town fall. All of them knew the truth: Smaug was merely asleep.

  The young woman sighed quietly, dark eyes following the familiar boat as Bard headed out. She left the bell tower after a few minutes, heading towards her home next to Bard and his children's. Should anyone need her help, they knew she would be found sorting out her medical kits. Living in Lake-town, it was mostly Men who she patched up and the rare Elf.

  Later that, it was Sigrid who pulled the Northern Guide from her quiet and next doors. She paused momentarily, not expecting to see Dwarves or a very familiar Hobbit but soon realised why she was there. Hal loosened the hold on her abilities enough to scan both Kili and Bilbo, pointedly ignoring the sudden silence. She set her medical kit out on a table and put out what she needed to help the younger Prince.

"When did Kili get hurt?"

No one had really seen the Ranger Guide since arriving in Laketown, for her healing skills had been needed. So it was a surprise when Nori dragged the tired looking young woman into Bard's house to join Thorin and the others, one evening. She looked almost relieved at seeing them and went to curl against Ori's side, much to Kili's grumbles.

Hal let their talking lull her into a light doze, something that rarely happened. But she trusted the group and her empathy told her she was safe.

"She's shattered."
