On why exit polls were probably broken in Ayodhya
Nobody spoke because of the fear factor. They were worried if they complained over their shop being demolished the authorities will come and demolish their homes too for no reason.
Residents also feared that if they speak they will have to face court cases. Police ka bhaiya (fear of the police) ensured the people did not speak out so nobody reported too about such incidents.

The war on Gaza is being used to advance fascism and white supremacy in the U.S. It is also opening people’s eyes to global systems that require genocide to continue. To stand with Palestine is to transform those systems and build a different world.
"...Israel is a fascist state, and its relentless genocide is blasting open more pathways for global fascism to establish itself. A growing number of fundamentalists and authoritarians entrenched in white supremacy and Islamophobia have been setting course across the globe over the last few years. Most recently, Argentina voted in a Trump-like right-wing president in November 2023 who is a strong supporter of Israel, pushing a Zionist agenda, waving the Israeli flag at his rallies in October, and making Israel one of his first trips as president. In January, as Israel continued its bombardment of Gaza, India’s fundamentalist authoritarian Modi celebrated the Hindu temple on the razed grounds of the Ayodhya mosque in January, and Italy’s government passed laws to protect public expressions of fascism. Senegal’s president postponed elections, jailed movement leaders, and sparked massive protests. These moves point towards a growing fascist consolidation. Israel’s attacks are emboldened, not just in Gaza but in the military and social violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. The U.S.’s brutal attacks on Yemen in response to their economic blockades in defense of Palestinians show what the empire is willing to do to protect itself, even in the face of global condemnation.
The conditions are set for Zionism to fuel fascism on a global level and prevent social movements from rising in the United States. Zionism and anti-Palestinian racism have been fundamental to the “war on terror” that started 20 years ago when 9/11 was used as a pretext for permanent war. The U.S. created legal and social frameworks of “terrorism” to undermine global resistance and to counter dissent, public speech, and organizing in the United States. Zionism and the War on Terror have been tools used to protect capital and also to attack resistance and liberation movements, particularly those led by Black, Palestinian, Muslim, and immigrant communities. Globally, the U.S. uses the threat of “terrorism” to expand military outposts in every corner of the world, and here, the FBI uses expanded surveillance to track Black anti-police protesters, and Zionism becomes a tool to turn protest into terrorism.
Zionism is a perfect vehicle for the expansion of the police state in the United States. Both liberals and the extreme right in the United States are using Zionism to advance a strategy that expands a social base for fascism, deepens control of public institutions, and sets the stage for consolidation at the federal level, protected by the police state with support from financial institutions, media, and higher education. Today, legislation weaponizing the definition of antisemitism to equate it with anti-Zionism and stifle pro-Palestinian actions is passing with bipartisan support. These attacks allow increased constriction of public discourse and dissent, which will be legislated at school board, university, city, state, and federal levels."
"... Contending with Zionism requires a break with empire. In short: there is nothing we can do about Israel, other than everything.
The opportunity within this moment is to develop a sharper strategy that activates the millions of people who see the faultlines and feel the rift."

Kannauj Rape Case: Nawab Singh Yadav Samajwadi Party leader arrested for attempting to rape minor alleges conspiracy
Samajwadi Party leader Nawab Singh Yadav was arrested on Monday for allegedly attempting to rape a 15-year-old girl. On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh police received a distress call on the 112 helpline number at around 1:30 am. “Last night around 1.30 am, a call was received on UP 112 wherein a girl said that she had been stripped and an attempt of assault had been made on her,” said Kannauj Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Kumar Anand. After arriving at the scene, the police rescued the teen and arrested Nawab Singh Yadav, who was found in an “objectionable” condition, he stated. During questioning, the girl told the police that her paternal aunt took her to Yadav’s residence as she needed a job opportunity. A case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and POCSO Act, and further investigation is underway. Calling it a “capitalist conspiracy,” Nawab Singh Yadav stated, “This is a capitalist conspiracy. The victim denies this, but despite that, she will undergo a medical examination. We remain steadfast in our fight against this injustice.” #WATCH | Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh: SP leader Nawab Singh Yadav arrested in Kannauj for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl He says, “This is a conspiracy by capitalists. As the news of Nawab Singh’s death came out, the Samajwadi Party started distancing itself from the leader. Kannauj District President Kaleem Khan stated that Singh is not affiliated with the party. “It is important to clarify that Nawab Singh Yadav, son of Chandan Singh Yadav, a resident of Addangapur, is not a member of the Samajwadi Party. Despite attempts to link him with the party, he has been engaged in anti-party activities for years and is not connected with us in any capacity,” reads an official statement issued by the Samajwadi Party. Attacking SP on the other front, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi accused the party of shielding its leaders. “Nawab Singh Yadav is not just any SP leader; he has been a representative of MP Dimple Yadav. Under SP’s policy that ‘boys will be boys,’ such crimes are consistently covered up. First, it was Ayodhya’s Moid Khan, and now it’s Kannauj’s Nawab Singh Yadav. This is the true character of SP,” he stated. àä•àäèàåàäèàåŒàäœ àä®àå‡àä‚ àä¸àäªàä¾ àäèàå‡àääàä¾ àä•àå€ àä•àä¾àä²àå€ àä•àä°àääàå‚àää àäªàä° àäàä¾àäœàäªàä¾ àäªàåàä°àäµàä•àåàääàä¾ @rakeshbjpup àä•àä¾ àä•àä°àä¾àä°àä¾ àäªàåàä°àä¹àä¾àä° àäÆàä°àå‹àäªàå€ àäèàäµàä¾àä¬ àä¸àä¿àä‚àä¹ àäïàä¾àäæàäµ àä¸àäªàä¾ àä•àä¾ àä›àåàäŸàäàåˆàäïàä¾ àäèàå‡àääàä¾ àäèàä¹àå€àä‚ àä¬àä²àåàä•àä¿ àäáàä¿àä‚àäªàä² àäïàä¾àäæàäµ àä•àä¾ àä¸àä¾àä‚àä¸àäæ àäªàåàä°àääàä¿àäèàä¿àäçàä¿ àäàå€ àä°àä¹àä¾ àä¹àåˆàåä àä¸àäªàä¾ àä²àäáàä¼àä•àå‡ àä¹àåˆàä‚ àä²àäáàä¼àä•àå‹àä‚ àä¸àå‡ àä—àä²àääàä¿àäïàä¾àä‚ àä¹àå‹ àäœàä¾àääàå€ àä¹àåˆ àä•àä¿ àäèàå€àääàä¿ àä•àå‡ àääàä¹àää àäàä¸àå‡ àä…àäªàä°àä¾àäçàå‹àä‚ àäªàä° àä¹àä®àå‡àä¶àä¾ àäªàä°àåàäæàä¾ àäáàä¾àä²àääàå€ àä°àä¹àå€ pic.twitter.com/o2zHorzux9 — Sandeep Tiwari/ àä¸àä‚àäæàå€àäª àääàä¿àäµàä¾àä°àå€ (@sandeepuptv) August 12, 2024 Nawab Singh has a total of 16 cases registered against him at Kannauj’s City Police Station and Tirwa Police Station, including charges of attempted murder and three other cases under the Goonda Act. UP cops to seek court nod for DNA test of Ayodhya gangrape accused
The police have started the paperwork to be submitted to court for a DNA test of the accused in the gangrape of a 12-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya. The police will conduct the DNA test of the accused Moin Khan and Raju Khan after getting permission from court.
Tumblr media
On July 30, the Ayodhya Police arrested Samajwadi Party functionary Moin Khan, who runs a bakery, along with his employee Raju Khan for allegedly gang-raping and impregnating the minor, who was an employee at Khan's bakery.
A sample of the womb of the rape survivor admitted for treatment at King George's Medical University (KGMU) was also kept.
The DNA test will be conducted after the investigating officer gets permission from court.
According to police sources, the girl was raped by the duo two months ago and the act was also recorded. The incident came to light when a recent medical examination revealed that the teen was pregnant.
On August 2, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met the minor. He also ordered the suspension of two police personnel for delay in investigating the case after meeting the girl.
The accused's bakery was also demolished by the district administration after it was sealed by the food adulteration department as it was found to be illegal, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sohawal Ashok Kumar said.

In Modi’s constituency Varanasi, India’s next temple-mosque spat explodes
Varanasi/Bengaluru, India – A festive atmosphere engulfed Varanasi, one of Hinduism’s holiest cities situated on the banks of the river Ganga.
It was the week Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the new temple to the Hindu deity Ram where the 16th century Babri Masjid once stood in the city of Ayodhya, 200km (124 miles) to the north.

In Varanasi, the streets and boats on the river were decked up with saffron flags bearing illustrations of Ram. Outside Varanasi’s famous and historic Kashi Vishwanath temple, the smell of burning camphor and the sound of Indian classical music drifted through the air as pilgrims flocked in large numbers to the temple to offer their prayers.
But next door, towards the west of the temple, the carnival-like spirit was replaced with a strict and sombre atmosphere, with barricades and police officers greeting crowds.
The officers were guarding the Gyanvapi Mosque – which is widely believed to have been built on the ruins of a 16th-century Kashi Vishwanath temple demolished by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1669.
While the partially ruined Kashi temple has been reconstructed and stands adjacent to the Gyanvapi Mosque, Hindu supremacist groups have been trying to reclaim the mosque for decades.
In May 2022, some Hindu patrons went to the Varanasi local court asking for permission to worship within the mosque’s complex after a court-ordered video survey found that a ‘Shivling’ – a symbol of the Hindu deity Shiva – was found near the wuzukhana, a well used by Muslim devotees at the mosque.
This case gained momentum in January this year when a survey from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), among other things, stated that a large Hindu temple existed on the site before the mosque and that sculptures of Hindu deities were also present in the cellars of the mosque.
Within a few days, on January 31, Judge Ajaya Krishna Vishvesha from Varanasi’s local court passed an order ruling that Hindus would be allowed to pray in the mosque’s basement – a section which had been sealed due to security concerns.
“District court Varanasi has created history today,” Vishnu Jain, a Supreme Court lawyer representing the Hindu side said in a post on X.
A day later, videos and images began appearing on social media of a priest offering prayers to the Hindu deities inside the mosque cellar.
#WATCH | A priest offers prayers at 'Vyas Ji ka Tehkhana' inside Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, after District court order.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masajid, the committee managing the Gyanvapi Mosque, rejected the local court’s order and is scheduled to challenge the case at the Allahabad High Court in the city of Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, on February 6.
“It seems like the judicial system is against Muslims,” Rais Ahmad Ansari, an advocate in Varanasi representing the Muslim side, told Al Jazeera.
Even amid a heightened momentum among India’s Hindu supremacist movement to target mosques, often facilitated by government authorities – a centuries-old mosque was razed in New Delhi last week – the case involving the Gyanyavi structure holds deep political significance. Varanasi is the electoral constituency of Modi, who leads the Hindu majoritarian Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that rules the country, yet has built strong relations with the presidents and ministers of Western liberal democracies.
India will vote in general elections expected to be held between March and May.
While the court order hasn’t stirred any violence or communal riots, a sense of anxiety is prevalent in the Muslim neighbourhoods of the city, according to advocate Ansari.
“Muslim-owned shops closed after the [January 31] hearing fearing a dispute. Friday’s namaz [prayers] was also greeted with tight security presence as hundreds gathered outside the Gynavapi Mosque to offer prayers. There is a sense of anxiety in every Muslim’s mind,” he said.
“It is still peaceful in Varanasi. But this peace feels uneasy,” he added.
Meanwhile, some news channels in the country hailed the local court order and the onset of prayers in the mosque as “a big win for Hindus” – a sentiment shared by several Hindus in Varanasi.
“We plan to go visit the site and see the priest performing rituals at the mosque as soon as our exams end,” Ayush Akash and Harshit Sharma, two 21-year-old political science students at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), told Al Jazeera.
Nita*, a Hindu devotee at the Kashi Vishwanath temple, was also keen to pray at the temple.
“We feel great about it [court ruling]. If we are let to visit and pray, we will go. When Hindus pray in Varanasi, they have their own places of worship. My brother is a priest and can only worship in his temple. But if the priest allows us into Gyanvapi, we will surely go,” she told Al Jazeera.
“People here have been going crazy since the inauguration of the Ayodhya temple,” Nita said.
“You can feel a Hindu vibe all around you on the streets. It was never like this before, but everybody is happy about things that are happening and that the Gyanvapi is a Hindu temple,” she added.
BHU’s Akash pointed out that people from all religions in Varanasi have coexisted peacefully for years and are mature enough not to riot over the temple-mosque dispute.
“It might look like Hindus are in power, and yes, some Muslim people might be unhappy about the local court’s decision on the Gyanvapi Mosque. But in this city, while ideologies do differ, it doesn’t stop Hindu-Muslim friendship. That’s how the real Varanasi is,” he said.
Since Modi came to power in 2014, critics and rights groups have accused his government of encouraging or facilitating a rise in Hindu supremacy, while instances of discrimination and violence against Muslims – who represent the largest religious minority in the country – have grown.
Hindu nationalist groups have also increasingly launched or intensified legal campaigns against several centuries-old mosques, claiming they are built on the remains of Hindu shrines.
“There is a slogan which Hindu nationalists have been using which says ‘Ayodhya Jhaki hain, Kashi-Mathura Baki Hain,'” said BHU’s Akash. Translated, the slogan says ‘Ayodhya is just a preview, Kashi [Varanasi] and Mathura are left’. It’s a reference to how the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992 in Ayodhya has been used by Hindu majoritarian groups to seek similar actions with the Mughal-era mosques in Varanasi and Mathura.
“But right now, in Varanasi, the Gyanvapi case is all about politics. It seems like the local court gave its ruling in time for the upcoming general elections. I feel the ruling is to unite Hindus before the elections,” he said.
Syed Ali Nadeem Rezavi, secretary of the Indian History Congress and professor of medieval history at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) shared a similar view but highlighted that this case is not like Ayodhya.
“Nobody has ever said that where the Gyanvapi Mosque stands today, there had been no temple. It is clear there was a temple and it was demolished. One can even see that with the naked eye,” Rezawi said.
“The reason behind why the temple was broken is where the contention arises since the manner in which the history of temple demolitions is currently being presented is a false narrative.”
Rezawi highlighted how the book, Temple Desecration and Muslim States in Medieval India, written by American scholar Richard Eaton, explains that in pre-colonial India, every dynasty had a deity they prayed to. If the ruler of the dynasty was defeated and the kingdom was taken over, then the deity and everything devoted to the deity – including the temple – was destroyed by the triumphant ruler.
“This was an accepted practice among kings and is exactly what [the emperor] Aurangzeb did. But the reason behind why he demolished the Vishwanath temple and built the mosque has many theories with some historians saying it was due to religious reasons and others claiming it was Aurangzeb’s way of punishing the Hindu family who managed the mosque since they had helped the Hindu king Shivaji escape,” he added.
“What Aurangzeb did should be condemned. But he lived during an era when there was no constitution. We have an Indian constitution which guarantees certain rights to people. So I don’t understand why the courts and prime minister are ignoring this and committing a crime more heinous than Aurangzeb,” Rezwai said.
Constitutionally, India is a secular state. The country also passed a law in 1991 called the Places of Worship Act, which prohibits the conversion of places of worship and stresses that their religious nature should be maintained.
But the final say about the future of the mosque lies with the country’s courts.
Abhishek Sharma, a Kashi temple devotee and coordinator at the Swagatam Kashi Foundation, told Al Jazeera that “people in Varanasi believe in ‘Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb’,” a metaphor for social harmony that references the mingling of the waters of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.

Terror Threats Surface Following Ayodhya's Ram Temple Inauguration
In the aftermath of the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, India, terror groups with alleged links to Pakistan have issued threats to carry out attacks. Notably, Farhatullah Ghauri, a fugitive Indian terrorist accused in several terror crimes, and The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), are among those issuing warnings.
Tumblr media
Farhatullah Ghauri, in a video titled ‘Ram Mandir: Declaration of War,’ has called for jihad against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), with the aim of establishing an Islamic nation in India. The video features images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and other prominent figures who attended the temple inauguration. It also includes threats against media persons.
Ghauri expressed disappointment at the declining support for terror activities in specific cities and condemned liberal Muslim personalities who denounce jihad. Security experts believe that terrorist groups based in Pakistan may exploit the sentiments surrounding the temple inauguration to further their agenda in India.
The article provides background information on Farhatullah Ghauri, detailing his involvement in past terror activities, his charge-sheeting by Delhi Police in 2016, and his alleged role as a handler for suspected ISIS terrorists. Ghauri, designated as a terrorist by the Indian government under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, is known for his secretive nature, using various aliases, and maintaining a low public profile.
The piece concludes by highlighting Ghauri’s recent propaganda efforts, calling on Indian Muslims to revolt, and his designation as a terrorist by INTERPOL, along with a description of his appearance. The overarching concern is that the temple inauguration may serve as an opportunity for Pakistan-based terrorist groups to radicalize and recruit vulnerable individuals in India.

Tamil Nadu, BJP Fight Over Ayodhya Live Stream Goes From Streets To Supreme Court
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has fired a salvo of posts on X alleging "repression" in Tamil Nadu to prevent people from watching the live stream of the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya today. Her comments came shortly after the Supreme Court this morning recorded the statement of the Tamil Nadu government, which claimed no restriction has been imposed on temples to live stream the Ram temple consecration event. The Supreme Court ordered the state government to consider applications, if any, for telecasting the pran prathistha ceremony live.
Tumblr media
The Tamil Nadu Police had removed some LED screens set up by BJP leaders at public places over allegations that they did not take permission to do so. The state unit of the BJP then approached the Supreme Court, asking for permission to allow live stream from Ayodhya in LED screens installed across the southern state.
Continuing her posts from yesterday, when she pointed out Tamil Nadu has over 200 temples dedicated to Lord Ram and the police have been stopping even private temples from live streaming the pran prathistha ceremony, Ms Sitharaman today said, "The repression saga in Tamil Nadu continues: a small village (not more than 200 houses) where people wanted to celebrate Ayodhya Ram mandir and watch Prime Minister Narendra Modi participate have been told that unless the district collector (DC) gives permission, they shall not install the hired LED screen."
"The DC is sitting on the matter. LED supplier is threatened. Village: Karunilam district, Chengalpattu," the Finance Minister said.
The ruling DMK government under Chief Minister MK Stalin has refuted her allegations, saying the BJP has been trying to "divert attention" from the DMK youth conference being held in Tamil Nadu's Salem today.
Ms Sitharaman also posted a video of some people removing a large LED screen from a temple.
"Inside the famous Kamakshi Kovil, which is privately held, where bhajans have started from 8 am, LED screens are being removed by plainclothed policemen… This is a serious infringement on our right to worship. The DMK government in Tamil Nadu completely failed to protect citizens' rights. Anti-Hindu DMK now bares its hatred for PM Modi with the police and suppresses peoples aspirations," Ms Sitharaman said in the post on X.
The Finance Minister said in Kanchipuram district alone, 466 LED screens were arranged for the live telecast. "In more than 400 of those places, the police have either confiscated the screens or deployed force to prevent the live telecast. LED suppliers are fleeing with fear. The anti-Hindu DMK is hitting at small businesses," she alleged.
The DMK government has also denied a newspaper report, which claims oral instructions from the state government barred special pujas and serving free food in the name of Lord Ram in temples. Calling it a "motivated report to bring disrepute to the state government," the DMK government has said it would take legal action against the newspaper.
The Supreme Court today said no one is bound to abide with oral orders "banning" live telecast of the Ram temple consecration ceremony in temples across Tamil Nadu.
The state government in a statement said that under Mr Stalin, 1,270 temples have been consecrated, free food is served daily in 764 temples, and restored 197 ancient temples, many of which are a thousand years old, at a cost of nearly ₹ 300 crore.
"Hindu believers in Tamil Nadu know this, even the Opposition can't deny," the state government said in the statement.
