". . . stop moving and let me braid your hair," you said, although there was no hint of disdain in your voice.
Kaveh stopped trying to look over his shoulder and stilled himself. Your skilled fingers ran through his hair, gently layering strands on top of one another one by one. The lamp on his desk cast a warm glow around you two as though you were in your own tiny dome and nothing else in the world mattered—not even the unfinished blueprints lying scattered in front of him.
"How is it coming along?" You walked up behind Kaveh, hands gently resting on his shoulders to take a peek at his work in progress.
"I think I made a miscalculation somewhere along the way but I can't seem to find where exactly," Kaveh complained, throwing his head back in frustration and exhaustion. He lifted a hand to yours and opened his eyes to meet your gaze. Despite having just sounded like was ready to throw in the towel his tone changed instantly upon looking up at you. "How are you, my dear?"
You brushed the messy strands of hair from his face with your other hand and hummed. "I am fine. I would be better though if you took a break."
Kaveh's heart clenched at your wistful tone. He too would be much better if the last steps of his project finished themselves and he'd be holding onto you instead of his measuring tools.
"I'm sorry. I'll be quick."
You only shook your head. "It's okay. Take all the time you need, you're doing your best." As you spoke, your hands moved to brush through his hair, undoing his usual red hairclips. Although taken aback, Kaveh felt as though you were detangling the bundles of nerves in his body all the while. With each stroke breathing became a little easier, his body a little lighter.
The last braid was done. You took a ribbon from your own hair to tie it up neatly. "All done." You smiled as he turned in his chair and wrapped his arms around your waist. "Do you like it?"
"I love it, and I love you," Kaveh uttered against your skin. "Can you stay for a little longer, please?"
