Freddie’s £10m rhapsody of hope for AIDS victims
World's biggest concert will pay for new hospital
ROCK LEGEND Freddie Mercury left a legacy of hope to thousands of fellow AIDS victims, it was revealed at the star-studded Wembley tribute to the Queen lead singer last night.
Guitarist Roger Taylor said a clinic for HIV and AlDS sufferers called the Freddie Mercury Hospital will be built in Britain from concert proceeds. Mercury died aged 45 last November after losing a long battle against AIDS. A large part of his fortune was donated to AIDS charities. It is expected that the total amount raised from last night's rock spectacular will top £10 million.
"This is something we feel strongly about and we are sure Freddie would approve," Taylor said.
“It's a means of using the tragedy to some good effect in bringing a greater awareness of the fact that AIDS affects all of us.”
Just before the show volunteers handed out red ribbons to fans, symbol of AIDS Awareness.
Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli joined forces with the cream of pop and rock talent including DavidBowie, Elton John, George Michael and metal band Guns'n'Roses.
Supermodel Cindy Crawford, the 26-year-wife of actor Richard Gere, spoke of the courage of close friends who died from AIDS.
Global
"The more discussion there is about AIDS the more people can learn and everyone needs to help," she said.
The 72,000 fans at Wembley paid £25 or more a head.
It was also broadcast live and attracted a larger global audience than Live Aid, going out to a billion people.
Some fans fell prey to touts charging up to £250 for tickets.
Even so, hundreds of fans were prepared to fork out.
"I supported Freddie throughout his life and I will support him in death," said Steve Parkin, 22, who travelled from Liverpool with no ticket.
"He was the greatest and I couldn't miss a concert like this."
Jayne Browning from Sheffield said: "I came with £100 and I would be willing to spend all of that."
Protests
Guns'n'Roses were one of the surprise bands in the concert.
Four years ago lead singer Axl Rose wrote a song with the lyrics: "Immigrants and faggots spread disease".
Shows have been dogged by protests from gay rights activists ever since.
But Guns'n'Roses drummer Matt Sorum said the band would be using the concert to explain their behaviour towards gays.
"Axl has a few things to say about accusations about being homophobic," Sorum said.
"He's still getting flak from it."
Just before the show Axl seemed to be suffering stage fright.
He failed to turn up for rehearsals and missed a sound check, preferring to stay in his Mayfair hotel suite.
Liz Taylor presented George Michael with a brooch with red rhinestones set in silver in the shape of the AIDS symbol.
Then, in a speech half way through the concert, she urged the crowd to practise safe sex and use condoms.
"You are the future of our world, you are the best and brightest," she said.
Gay
"You are the shining light that will illuminate a better world tomorrow.
"Protect yourselves. Every time you have sex use a condom. Every single time.
"Straight sex, gay sex, bisexual sex — use a condom whoever you are.
"And if you use drugs, don't share the needle.
"Each day around the world 5,000 people are infected with HIV — the virus that causes AIDS.
"Just last week it was reported in the U.S. that there are 9,000 actual cases of AIDS among teenagers and young adults, with thousands more who probably don't even know they are infected.
"There are 72,000 people in this stadium tonight. Look at yourselves, look at how many you are.
"In two short weeks there will be as many new infections as there are people here tonight. Please don't let it happen to you."
She added: "We are here to celebrate the life of Freddie Mercury, an extraordinary rock star who rushed across our cultural landscape like a comet shooting across the sky.
"We are also here to tell the whole world that he, like others we have lost to AIDS, died before his time.
"The bright light of his talent still exhilarates us, even now that his life has been so cruelly extinguished.
"It needn't have happened. It shouldn't have happened. Please, let's not let it happen again.
"Protect yourself, love yourself, respect yourself, because I will keep telling you until you do.
"I won't give in and I won't giveup, because the world needs you to live."
At the show the stars poured out personal tributes to their dead friend.
Roger Taylor said: "This concert is primarily a celebration of and a tribute to our dear friend and colleague Freddie Mercury."
His Queen co-star Brian May added: "It seems inconceivable that we now have to do without Freddie.
Living
"This proud, vibrant, irreverent and passionately creative man surely cannot have been extinguished in the prime of his life.
"Freddie was denied the privilege of growing old but in 45 years he packed in enough living for a dozen lifetimes.
"A child of strict upbringing he was, when I met him some 25 years ago, an uncertain youth stepping into an unfamiliar world outside.
"But his head was full of great dreams and the certainty that they could be achieved.
"At the age of 20 he already lived the dream, and behaved with a gentle grandeur that demanded respect.
"He looked and acted like a million dollars, though he scarcely had the bus fare home.
"That never changed. Later, when his millions were safely in the bank, someone else always carried his purse.
"Perhaps in changing his name prior to our first record he decided to leave the fragile Frederick Bulsara at home under parental care and become the god Freddie Mercury."
Queen guitarist John Deacon said: "It's hard to imagine being here without Freddie. We will all miss him."
Elton John said: "Until a cure is found I won't rest. I've lost so many friends.
"I'm in my mid 40s and this is the time in life that instead of just planning everything around a career, you can try to do something else."
George Michael said: "Freddie Mercury was a great inspiration to me and I felt a genuine loss when he died.
"So this concert will be a strange mixture of honour and sadness.
"Hopefully it will also serve as one more opportunity to fight against AIDS.”

Over a week since my last post, but we are still alive and have not been kidnapped (yet). 2 days in the Peruvian Amazon and we discovered just why it was called a rain forest. Day 1 was sunny as we raced down the river, well until the engine failed. False start and 'we needed a bigger boat' No Sharks but caiman, turtles and capybara. The piranhas didn't appear either. Stayed in a lodge type resort , electricity to charge phones etc was limited to between 5 and 10 pm, no hot water, but the bar was open 24/7. Day 2 was the wettest day ever with a 12k hike scheduled. we delayed until the rain eased, however once 6k onto the walk it pissed down again leaving the trails knee deep in shitty water. Not my favourite day so far, but we did get pissed at the bar.
Back to Lima the next day and our last supper with the group. We all promised to keep in touch and they promised to come to Liverpool in August for a weekend out. Aks and Vinny have promised to come up from London, but I will believe that when I see it. I wil still be getting the last train home using my bus pass.
Ann and I stayed a few more days in Mira Flores, before moving on to Santiago. A little bit if luxury, with roof top pool and air conditioning. plus ESPN on the tele for multiple replays of City v Bayern. Football on TV almost 24/7. They have even shown Wrexhams great escape here in Chile with the European round up. A walking tour of the City yesterday, with a lot of political rhetoric. Keeping my gob shut though before we get collared by the secret police. Still a little but volatile here, the riot police out with water cannons tonight. seems like an every day occurrence here. Didn't fancy taking any photos. Been to Valpraiso today on an organised tour. Worth the visit for beaches and so called famous graffiti artists in a very bohemian district. Also a heavy wiff of weed.
Back at our hotel now watching more champions league reruns, after organising flights and accommodation for San Pedro de Atacama ( staying in a converted shipping container, but it does have air con.) No transport from the Airport, yet so winging it a bit this time. That's what all the youngsters do.
Watch out for the next installment in a few days
I will try and post some photos but having trouble uploading them.

PM condemns “far right thuggery” across UK
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned what he called “far-right thuggery” after days of violent anti-immigration protests.
Violent protests erupted in cities across the UK after three girls were killed in a stabbing at a children’s dance class in Southport in north-west England last week. The killings were investigated by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups, as misinformation spread that the alleged attacker was an immigrant and radical Islamist.
However, police stated that the suspect was born in Britain and were not treating it as a terrorist incident. Protests spread across cities across the country, including Liverpool, Bristol, and Manchester on Saturday, leading to dozens of arrests. Shops and businesses were also vandalised and looted, with several police officers injured.
On Sunday, hundreds of anti-immigration protesters gathered outside a hotel in the Rotherham area of northern England where Britain’s Home Secretary said asylum seekers were living.
I utterly condemn the far-right thuggery we’ve seen this weekend. Be in no doubt, those that have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council reported that 147 people had been arrested since Saturday evening and more would be arrested in the coming days. Starmer, who took office a month ago after his Labour party won a convincing election victory over the long-ruling Conservatives, said residents were in “absolute fear” of “marauding gangs” in Rotherham.
Local police reported that 10 police officers suffered injuries in Rotherham during clashes with a crowd of 700 people, some of whom threw wooden planks and doused officers with fire extinguishers before smashing hotel windows. Lindsey Butterfield, Assistant Chief Constable at South Yorkshire Police, stated:
The mindless actions of those today have achieved nothing other than sheer destruction and leaving members of the public and the wider community in fear.
Sunday’s riots took place in smaller towns than Saturday’s, including the northwest towns of Lancaster and Bolton as well as Aldershot, southern England. Police reported arresting 14 people after a march through Middlesbrough in the north-east led to “mindless violence” and a warning to the public to avoid the town centre.
Violent protests last erupted across Britain in 2011, when thousands took to the streets after police shot dead a Black man in London. Starmer was the country’s top prosecutor at the time.
A group of faith leaders from Liverpool also issued a joint statement condemning the riots in the UK.
Since Monday, too many people have sought to use the tragedy to create division and hate. It can – and has – left communities in fear and has put people in danger.

On this date in REAL music history. I’m not talking about that BS ….
October 17th
2009 - The Rolling Stones
Johnny Depp presented Keith Richards with the 'Rock Immortal' Award at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, California, as part of this years Scream Awards.
2008 - Four Tops
Four Tops singer Levi Stubbs died at his Detroit home, aged 72. Stubbs had been in ill health since being diagnosed with cancer in 1995 and a stroke and other health problems led him to stop touring in 2000. The group signed with Motown Records in 1963 and produced 20 Top 40 hits over the following 10 years, making music history with other acts in Berry Gordy's Motown stable.
2005 - Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury's 1974 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow failed to sell in an eBay auction, having not met its reserve price. It had been listed by his sister, Kashmira Cooke, who had inherited the car from him. The auction had attracted nearly 200 bids and exceeded £60,000 (approximately $93,000). The luxury vehicle had not appeared in public since 2002, when it had been used to transport the Bulsara family to the premiere of the Queen stage musical We Will Rock You. It came with a box of Kleenex Mansize tissues left in the car by Freddie.
2000 - Jimi Hendrix
A flat in Montagu Square London, which was once owned during the 60s by Ringo Starr went on the market for £575,000. The two bedrooms, two-story property was also home for Jimi Hendrix, John & Yoko and Paul McCartney during the 60s.
1999 - Thomas Durden
Thomas Durden died aged 79. Wrote the lyrics to Heartbreak Hotel, one of Elvis Presley's early hits. Durden had read a newspaper account of a man who had committed suicide, the man had left a note saying, ''I walk a lonely street,'' Durden used the phrase as the basis for 'Heartbreak Hotel.’
1981 - Christopher Cross
Christopher Cross started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Arthur's Theme, (Best That You Can Do)', his second US No.1. and a No.7 hit in the UK.
1973 - The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones performed two shows at Foret Nationale, Brussels, Belgium, as part of a tour of the UK and Europe. Opening for the tour's shows were Billy Preston and American group Kracker, the first band to be signed to Rolling Stones Records. Bobby Keys didn’t show up for the concert, which resulted in him being banned by Mick Jagger from future Rolling Stones tours until 1989, with occasional exceptions. According to legend Bobby missed the gig due to him filling a hotel bathtub with Dom Perignon champagne and drinking most of it.
1964 - Manfred Mann
Manfred Mann started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy', possibly the first No.1 with a Nonsense Song Title. Also a No.1 in the UK, the song was first released by the US group The Exciters.
1962 - The Beatles
In between their lunchtime and night shows at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, The Beatles travelled to Granada TV Centre in Manchester to make their television debut. They appeared live on the local magazine program People and Places performing two songs ‘Some Other Guy’ and 'Love Me Do

The start of us
Tumblr media
Pre season. Probably the most boring yet quite exciting period of time there was during the football periods. It was long, hot, boring, exciting, confusing and most of all interesting when you where a part of the couching staff at Liverpool, you were a physiotherapist and klopp insisted you went everywhere with them as he always said 'your the best in the business'. Pre season was being held in Salzburg Austria this year, a place you had never been too. You had flown with klopp and the staff whilst all the players flew on their own or together depending on where their national team was based. Since you all broke up before the euros, thiago had been none stop texting you about this new signing, kostas tsimikas. He sent it as a sort of joke at first as he had never known you to go on a date, but now he could swear that you and him will end up married and you had no idea why.
"Oh hello y/n" klopp sang through the doors of the hotel we were all staying in with all his suitcases.
"Hello klopp" you said with a giggle whilst walking up to hug him, you had been in salzburg since last night but klopp spent the night in another hotel with his family, now only arriving in all our shared hotel.
"You heard about kostas im guessing" klopp announced to you as you where walking off from him to carry on getting things ready for the lads arrival which consisted of hotel room keys and refreshments.
"Erm what? Oh yeah! Greek lad, yeah I know" you nervously said turning around not really knowing whilst you became so anxious at the thought of meeting kostas whitin the hour.
"Y/n what's up your not nervo-" klopp said being cut short.
"Oh well is it my favourite person ever!" Virgil shouted from the door dragging in his suitcases as klopp started to laugh at him.
"How you doing mate? You good" virgil replied to klopp giving him that sort of lad hug which you knew would always confuse you.
"Virgil you're in room 203, 2nd floor 3rd room down from the lifts" you said with a smile as he was clearly very happy to see you. You and virgil had always been close he was probably more of big brother to you whereas James milner and klopp where more like dad's to you.
"Thank you darling" he said with a giggle to you whilst dropping his suitcases with the bell boy and walking up to his room.
After a few more people came in you started to get nervous, you where constantly playing with the sleeves of your red training top or the bottom of your shorts. A car had pulled up and you knew Salah was about to come in but you didn't know who else had traveled with him.
"Hey guys" mo cheered from the door walking in with a million suitcases.
"You do know we're going for 10 days" you said to him with a laugh, typical Salah. Behind him you saw a very tall and beautiful Greek man, you knew it was him, how could you have not known.
"Oh hi, erm im y/n nice to meet you"you said sweetly to kostas offering your hand for him to shake.
"Hello I'm kostas, don't be silly I'm more of a hugger anyway" he said with a smile as his greek accent just fell out of his mouth. He wrapped his arms around you and his warm embrace fell on you. It was magical, he smelt like heaven, he had the most amazing arms you had even seen, his hair was to die for. What a signing this was, you thought.
"Awww, how was your flight?" You said to him softly whilst giving mo his room key as he gave you a look knowing you fancied him.
"Oh yeah it was good, kind of long but yeah good" he replied to you with the most perfect smile, his English was amazing possibly better that your own and you're born and bred English.
"Awww good im glad, well your room is 341" you said reading off the card as he stood infront of you as your eyes fell open wider than usual.
"Ok thank you, what's up?" He questioned giggling as he realised how confused and freaked out you had gotten.
"Oh nothing, nothing just im next door that's all" you said trying to play it cool as you knew you could of blown your cover.
"Oh well maybe we will be seeing more of each other" he shouted walking off to the lifts with a huge smile on his face, he was cheeky, you liked it, it was something quite sexy.
After all the boys had arrived and had a meeting, klopp suggested everyone went on a casual walk after tea, something which sounded very inviting. You had been pacing up and down your room not knowing what to wear, you had no idea why it was this hard when you only needed something causal and that was it. You decided on a pare of cycling shorts a large oversized lfc Nike hoodie and some white Nike Jordans. You quickly re applied a slight touch of makeup which consisted of mascara and abit of eyebrow gel, so it was hardly a masterpiece.
After getting ready you opened the hotel door after hearing what sounded like, Sadio and Naby racing down the halls like school kids probably wanting to get to the lobby first to wait for everyone. You opened the heavy door noticing that someone else had aswell.
"Oh hi" you giggled noticing kostas locking his hotel door carefully as he looked up to see you.
"Wooow, erm no hiya" he said correcting himself as he quite literally avoided anything remotely smooth in that sentence. Your cheeks blushed slightly at his little mistake, which you hope he hadn't noticed on you.
"So what's your actual job here then, because well you know what mine in" kostas asked curiously as you both walked towards the lifts.
"I'm a physiotherapist, aswell as coaching staff, klopp wants me to do everything cause apparently I'm the best in the business" you said laughing remembering when klopp joked about it.
"Oh wooow that's quite cool, you grew up in Liverpool then?" He asked curiously, his greek accent becoming more prominent for some reason making butterflies go round in you stomach.
"Yeah, I obviously still live there now" you said looking down at the floor with a smile for some reason this boy knew how to put a smile on your face. He weren't like every other boy he was something else you didn't know if this was because he was just trying to win you over but whatever it was it was working.
"Are we all ready" klopp shouted from the front door in the lobby waving everyone out.
"Oi missy what's going on with you and lover boy over there" James milner said running up behind you, to speak to you.
"Oh nothing why?" You said acting all confused so you could avoid any confrontation.
"Just so I know when to give my, 'hurt her and I will hurt your face' sort of speech!" He said quite loudly making thiago and alex laugh abit to much. You looked at him laughing as you were not expecting him to come out with something like that.
"You do know you're not actually my dad?" You questioned, laughing making him laugh as he knew full well he wasn't but you where someone he wanted to protect, he helped you get the job you have now as he saw the potential you had. The day you met him was the best, you immediately bonded over liverpool in the middle of a train station as he recognised you from being a student trainer at the AXA training centre.
"I know love" he said with a laugh giving you a side hug as you walked down the hard pavement to get to the nice walkway.
You had all been walking for around 10 mins until klopp came to a sudden stop at the front causing you all to stop.
"Right guys we're going to be going on a midnight bike ride I hope you all know how to cycle if not then I am truly sorry" klopp laughed finding his own bike whilst everyone charged for their own. You waited at the back with James in order for the rush to die down, you weren't one for getting your hand broken off or someone standing on your toe.
"Y/n, James, yours are over here" thiago shouted rushing you both over as he tried to balance all the bikes.
"Here y/n" kostas softly spoke giving you the bike delicately as his hand fell on top of yours sending shivers up your arm. You looked up at kostas who was looking at you a warm pigment falling on his cheeks. You didnt realise you where going to accidently touch his hand, that means real contact, real life touching, ok yeah it wasn't that big of a deal but it was kostas.
"Sorry" he giggled with the softest smile looking at how your eyes went soft looking up at his angelic face.
"Its ok" you replied with a face that said 'kiss me under the stars and forget about everything else'.
"Oi love birds come on" trent shouted waving you both over as he tried not to nock into robbo on his travels on their bikes.
After you had the most eventful and thrilling bike ride it had taken you to 2am which caused many of you to be tired, grouchy and more or less moody. You hadn't been fully there all night all you could think about was him, you liked him, you loved him (not really but still)
"I will see you tomorrow then yeah" kostas said looking down at you infront of your hotel room as the tiredness was creeping up onto your big blue eyes.
"Yeah of course" you smiled up to him, your smiles matched up with each others it was perfect. You looked into each others eyes and the world stopped, no one mattered, no one lived, no one knew you where going to kiss. His lips came crashing down onto yours as his large hand trailed up onto your neck tangling his long fingers into your hair. It was perfect. It was everything!

Freddie's £10m rhapsody of hope for AIDS victims
Annie Leask and Louise Gannon, Daily Express, 21st April 1992 (x)
ROCK LEGEND Freddie Mercury left a legacy of hope to thousands of fellow AIDS victims, it was revealed at the star-studded Wembley tribute to the Queen lead singer last night.
Guitarist Roger Taylor said a clinic for HIV and AIDS sufferers called the Freddie Mercury Hospital will be built in Britain from the concert proceeds.
"It's a means of using the tragedy to some good effect in bringing a greater awareness of the fact that AIDS affects all of us."
Just before the show volunteers handed out red ribbons to fans, symbols of AIDS Awareness.
Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli joined forces with the cream of pop and rock talent including David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael and metal band Guns 'n' Roses.
Supermodel Cindy Crawford, the 26-year-wife of actor Richard Gere, spoke of the courage of close friends who died from AIDS.
Global
The more discussion there is about AIDS the more people can learn and everyone needs to help," she said.
The 72,000 fans at Wembley paid £25 or more a head.
It was also broadcast live and attracted a larger global audience than Live Aid, going out to a billion people.
Some fans fell prey to fools charging up to £200 for tickets.
Even so, hundreds of fans were prepared to fork out.
"I supported Freddie throughout his life and I will support him in death," said Steve Parkin, 22, who travelled from Liverpool with no ticket.
"He was the greatest and I couldn't miss a concert like this."
Jayne Browning from Sheffield said, "I came with £100 and I would be willing to spend all of that."
Protests
Guns 'n' Roses were one of the surprise bands in the concert.
Four years ago lead singer Axl Rose wrote a song with the lyrics "Immigrants and faggots spread disease".
Shows have been dogged by protests from gay rights activists ever since.
But Guns 'n' Roses drummer Matt Sorum said the band would be using the concert to explain their behaviour towards gays.
"Axl had a few things to say about accusations about being homophobic," Sorum said.
"He's still getting flak from it."
Just before the show Axl seemed to be suffering stage fright.
He failed to turn up for rehearsals and missed a sound check, preferring to stay in his Mayfair hotel suite.
Liz Taylor presented George Michael with a broach with red rhinestones set in silver in the shape of the AIDS symbol.
Then in a speech halfway through the concert, she urged the crowd to practice safe sex and use condoms.
"You are the future of our world, you are the best and brightest," she said.
Gay
"You are the shining light that will illuminate a better world tomorrow.
"Protest yourselves. Every time you have sex, use a condom. Every single time.
"Straight sex, gay sex, bisexual sex - use a condom whoever you are.
"And if you use drugs, don't share the needle.
"Each day around the world 5,000 people are infected with HIV - the virus that causes AIDS.
"Just last week it was reported in the US that there are 9,000 actual cases of AIDS among teenagers and among adults, with thousands more who probbably don't even know they are infected.
"There are 72,000 people in this stadium tonight. Look at yourselves, look at how many you are.
"In two short weeks, there will be as many new infections as there are people here tonight. Please don't let it happen to you."
She added, "We are here to celebrate the life of Freddie Mercury, the extraordinary rock star who rushed across our cultural landscape like a comet shooting across the sky.
"I won't give in and I won't give up, because the world needs you to live."
"Perhaps in changing his name prior to our first record, he decided to leave the fragile Frederick Bulsara at home under parental care and become the god Freddie Mercury."
"Hopefully it will also serve as one more opportunity to fight against AIDS."

6 10/60
1
went out at 8 1/4 – Took Cordingley and went to see the Castle – missed the proper turn of the Castle gate, and went to the top of the hill to the Deal turnpike – 3/4 hour seeing the Castle, that is, walking round it within the walls with one of the wardens (there are 3 ) – the great square tower a magazine of military stores – never shewn – might be seen with a very particular order from Captain Smart, commanding engineer, who lives at Ashley-fort near Dover – nor, without a particular order from Captain S– (Smart) (which he seldom gives but to military men, but would not refuse to ladies), could one see the underground bomb-proof barracks, communicating by several subterraneous passage with the Castle, and having light from windows cut in the cliff, about midway from the bottom (of the cliff) – the Chimneys come out to the surface in the Castle yard thro’ little round brick-walled inclosures (like little pinfolds) that have a singular appearance – these subterraneous barracks have also a communication with the preventive station where they watch the smugglers – very few smugglers here – the Castle stood upon, or rather the Castle wall enclosed 35 acres –
saw the old church said to have been built by King Lucius (the 1st Xtian (Christian) King in Britain, now a coal-store – but no soldiers here now – only a corporal and 6 artillery men sent every day from the heights, who stay 24 hours and are then relieved by another party – 2 regiments always in the Castle during the war – saw the old tower said to have been built by Claudius, and cased with flint by Henry 5 – Fine views of sea, the cliff, and country – but too hazy to see far across the channel – the French coast quite shut out from view – Lord Liverpool governor of the castle lives at Warder? Castle 2 miles from Deal, 6 from here (Dover) – a modern place –
got back to breakfast in about 1/4 hour – easily ran down the steps to the Inn the King’s head kept by a widow a Mrs Podevin – she pays so much to have the coach stop at her every other week, and, when it is her week, the people in London have no right to recommend passengers to Mr Chaplin’s the London hotel, who is proprietor and has the coach the alternate weeks – Till returning from the castle this morning and seeing the name over the door, I knew no other than that I had stopt at the London hotel – agreed Mrs Podevin was ill used – would not say it was Leuliette who recommended me to the London but gave her the card, having written on the back the date of Today and ‘the lady from Webbe’s hotel’ because this Mrs P– (Podevin) said would prove what they always Desired, videlicet the recommending passengers to the London hotel – she wanted to recommend me to her relation of her own name in Calais, but I had determined to go to Quillac’s – the London hotel is a better looking house than this – this is very secondary, but I have been pretty comfortable – and I care not for more at present –
Breakfasted and on board the Britannia steam packet Captain Busher at 12 – An hour before we were out of the harbour – beautiful day – the sea quite smooth – nobody sick – landed at Calais, on the quay, at 4 – met with a civilised, quiet-looking, mild-mannered, elderly, gentlemanly enough man on board, with whom I got into conversation, and finding he knew French + Calais well, and was going to Quillacq’s, asked to join him – he was very civil – went with me to the custom to get my writing box searched, and desired Quillacq to let me have everything comfortable, saying he would pay his respects in the morning – I found his name was Welch – He had come to take back his son whom he had had here in a French family to learn the language during the holidays of his classical school at home – The boy (ætatis 13) came to meet us – a nice boy enough –
got to Quillacqs about 4 1/2 § – Dinner at 5 1/4 – potage à la Julienne and fricassee de poulet – un biscuit, 2 peches, and 2 poires pour dessert – everything very good – had it in my bed-room à la François – a very neat room – had a bottle of red hermitage (good) – drank about a 3rd of it, and felt a little idle and sleepy –
Dawdled doing nothing Till 7. from then to 9 1/2 writing finished my letter of 3 pages and the ends pretty Tolerably close to my aunt (vide Friday) and wrote the latter 2 pages and the ends and under the seal, and finished my letter to M– (Mariana) begun on Friday – giving an account of my proceedings – affectionate to π (Mariana) but anyone might see it for they would not understand my express want of her not lessened by my wine –
From 10 1/4 to 11 3/4 repacked my trunk and basket entirely; for they had turned everything out at the custom house – E two dots O no dot, marking discharge from venereal complaint little or no discharge –
Very  fine day – but about 8 p.m. Cordingley came in to say, it ‘lightened so hard’, she really durst not sit in her room by herself – I smiled and bade her sat down in a corner of my room – she did not stay long – the storm began to abate – the lightning was not vivid (at first short lightning then forked) the flashes incessant and the thunder very loud for above 1/2 hour – with very heavy rain the Talbot steam packet ought to have been in by 6, but was not then in sight – my little Fahrenheit 77° at 11 3/4 p.m.
left margin:
§ went immediately to the diligence bureau – thro’ the negligence of Mr Chaplin at the London hotel Dover, he had put me down in the way-bill as having outside places all the way, instead of only from London to Dover, and I had the difference to pay – i.e. 18 francs 16 sols – but got a receipt for the money and a promise of its being returned in Paris –

the beatles’ early haunts: a basic guide
the beatles’ most popular clubs/haunts explained in a basic guide.
BEGINNINGS: LIVERPOOL
WOOLTON VILLAGE FETE
john lennon and the quarrymen played at the woolton village fete july 6, 1957. it was on this day that john was introduced to paul mccartney by john’s friend ivan vaughan after the performance, thus sparking a friendship.
“at woolton village fete i met him. i was a fat schoolboy, and as he reached an arm on my shoulder, i realized he was drunk. we were twelve then, but in spite of his sideboards, we went on to become teenage pals.” - paul mccartney, in his own write.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CASBAH CLUB
the casbah club was another liverpool music club which operated from 1959-1962 and was owned by mona best, pete best’s mother. the beatles first performed there 32 times from 1960 to 1962, the quarrymen previously playing there 7 times from august 29 to october 10, 1959. the casbah was the first club the beatles played several weeks after their return from their first germany trip in the midst of a career depression.
Tumblr media
THE CAVERN
the cavern club, located on 10 mathew street,  was a popular music club that marked the beginnings and some of the greatest achievements of the beatles as a band. they performed at the cavern first on february 21, 1961 as john lennon, paul mccartney, george harrison, pete best and stuart sutcliffe (until 1962) until ringo starr joined the lineup. the beatles went through multiple changes during their time performing at the cavern; they started as the silver beetles to the silver beatles, and eventually the beatles.
it was here that the beatles gained recognition by the most popular magazine in liverpool at the time, bill harry’s mersey beat magazine and by brian epstein - recommended by alistair taylor - who had a background in business at the time. brian epstein would watch the beatles perform november 9, 1961, when he decides that he would like to further be involved with the beatles:
“i was immediately struck by their music, their beat, and their sense of humour on stage—and, even afterwards, when i met them, i was struck again by their personal charm. and it was there that, really, it all started.” - brian epstein
the beatles performed at the cavern in between trips to hamburg, germany from 1961-1963. in total, the beatles performed approximately 155 lunchtime performances and 125 evening performances. rock and roll was only allowed at lunchtimes. It was here that pete best was switched out for ringo starr - then not known as ringo but by ritchie - august 15, 1962.
Tumblr media
HAMBURG
“ i might have been born in liverpool - but i grew up in hamburg.”…
INDRA CLUB
the indra club was the first club the beatles had performed at upon arrival to hamburg, germany on august 17, 1960. the indra was the last music club on the große freiheit strip and the smallest. the beatles played long hours: up to 7 hours a night. speed/preludin/prellies begun to take influence in the beatles’ lives, as they would keep the beatles energized for the viciously tiring performances. their first residency was at this club at the end of the bambi kino theatre, in a storage room:
“we were put in this pigsty. we were living in a toilet, like right next to the ladies’ toilet. we’d go to bed late and be woken up next day by the sound of the cinema show and old german fraus pissing next door.” - john lennon, the beatles anthology
“the city of hamburg was brilliant; a big lake, and then the dirty part. the reeperbahn and grosse freiheit were the best thing we’d ever seen, clubs and neon lights everywhere and lots of restaurants and entertainment. it looked really good. there were seedy things about it, obviously, including some of the conditions we had to live in when we first got there. the Indra was at the far end of grosse freiheit, off the reeperbahn, the main club zone. the whole area was full of transvestites and prostitutes and gangsters, but i couldn’t say that they were the audience. hamburg was really like our apprenticeship, learning how to play in front of people.” - george harrison, the beatles anthology
their final performance under contract was october 3, 1960. they were then moved to the larger more popular kaiserkeller.

KAISERKELLER
the very next day after the beatles moved from the indra club, they played once again october 4th to november 30, 1960. here, stuart “stu” sutcliffe became involved romantically with astrid kirchherr, a photographer. this was the final club the beatles played during their first trip to hamburg as george harrison was deported for being underage, and paul and pete were arrested and soon deported for arson (they lit a condom on fire inside the club). stu decided to stay behind with astrid and john had no other choice but to leave for england.

STAR-CLUB
their second hamburg (pt. 2) haunt was the star-club - right on the reeperbahn - across the street from the kaiserkeller. they played here april 13th to may 31, 1962 and again on november 1st to 14th and december 18 to 31, 1962.
“we came back to play the star-club, a big place and fantastic because it had a great sound system. this time we had a hotel. i remember it was quite a long walk from the club, at the top of the reeperbahn going back towards the city. we were there for a couple of months.” - george harrison
