SERVICE PROCEDURE

Remove Front Pillar Finisher

IMPORTANT

1. Remove the front body side welt (see Figure 1).

2. Snap loose both clips by carefully prying with a suitable tool where shown in Figure 2.

CAUTION:

The lower clip will not completely snap loose. Attempting to completely snap loose by force may damage the finisher. Continue to Step 3 for proper

removal.

3. Unfasten the lower clip from the front pillar finisher (finisher) with a suitable tool. See Figure 3 and 4.

4. Tip the top of the finisher inward, and then pull out (see Figure 5).

5. Remove the lower clip from the "A" pillar by pinching and then flipping upward (see Figure 6).

Re-install Front Pillar Finisher

1. Insert the lower clip on the finisher (see Figure 7).

2. Re-install the finisher by inserting its locator tabs into their slots (see Figure 8 and 9).

3. Align the lower and upper clips into their slots, and then press both into place (see Figure 10).

4. Re-install the front body side welt.

History of Income Inequality

Income inequality has existed since the dawn of civilization when the idea of economics first crossed the mind of mankind. However, for the sake of brevity, I will largely be focusing on the history of income inequality from 1800 – Present Day.

In the United States during and following WWI, the top 1% of income earners amassed approximately 18% of all available income within the country.(1) This massive disparity is partially responsible for the introduction of America’s first income tax. However, rather than serving to redistribute wealth, the tax acted to ensure the fair payment of money into government coffers, recovering money lost by reducing tariffs on imports.(2) This did little towards capping maximum income, with “the low top marginal tax rate of 7% on income over $500,000, which in 2013 inflation-adjusted dollars is $11,595,657.”(2) This top rate of marginal tax continually increased until 1918(2), however, the disparity in earnings between the top 1% of the country and the remainder did not decrease at a proportional rate. Their earnings bottomed at approximate 15% in 1923.(2) Then as marginal tax rates decreased throughout the period of the Roaring 20s, income inequality reached another peak immediately before the Great Depression. This inequality is considered a contributing factor to the Depression, as the small portion of the population with available currency to spend resulted in a bottleneck on spending and thus a bottleneck of economic stimulation.(3) This bottleneck was then accentuated by rising unemployment, further reducing the purchasing power of individuals not within the upper echelons of socioeconomic status.

This disparity in income levels was not restricted solely to the United States. Similarly across the world, the top 1-10% of households disproportionately drew large shares of total income throughout the 20th century. They additionally existed to a similar degree previously.(4)

Many

explanations exist for this disparity, with one of the most widely known theories being presented within Karl Marx’s The Communist Manifesto.

This pamphlet originally distributed in 1848 outlined Marx’s idea of the root of income inequality; the exploitation of the proletariat by the bourgeois. Effectively, the abuse of the working class by the upper classes in order to achieve material wealth.(5) In response, he advocated for the uprising of the proletariat in order to create a utopian, classless society through redistribution of wealth.

Reflection: Overall, the results of my research into the recent history of income inequality have been unsurprising, the basic principle of a high division between the upper and lower classes, with correspondingly high taxes upon the income of the upper class remain relatively constant throughout the 20th century. However, the incredibly high 73% top marginal tax rate on incomes over $1 million in the United States in 1918 is rather shocking. This immediately begs the question as to how such tax rates impacted emigration from the United States within the top rungs of socioeconomic status, as in order to avoid such large taxation, they may have chosen to simply uproot and transition to countries where they would sacrifice less of their overall income.
