1967 Volvo 123GT 🇸🇪

Volvo may be most renowned for its safety and reliability, but the brand did more than dip its foot into the pool of motorsport. Race-prepped 122s, known as “Amazons” in their homeland of Sweden and sisterships to the 123GT in body, took home class wins in touring car races at the ‘Ring and Brands Hatch and first place in a score of the top rally championships of the era. The 123GT capitalized on that legacy and brought performance to the production model. While more than 5,000 models were planned, only around 1,500 were built. In the 123GT, you got a high-compression straight-four with dual SU carburetors delivering roughly 115 hp. To rein in the additional power, the 123GT came with front-disc brakes and a stiff suspension. Volvo didn’t scrimp on the accoutrements either; Recaro seats, fog and driving lights, a large tachometer and plenty of custom trim make the model standout.

My very first car was a 66 Volvo Amazon 122S. I used this classic car daily for 5 years. My second car was a 68 Volvo Amazon 123GT  and I also drove that classic for 5 years. DO NOT, FOR ONE MOMENT, FALL FOR THE TESLA-ESQUE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO EVs PROMISED BY CHINESE POLESTAR; IT'S JUST SMOKE & MIRRORS: My Volvo timeline, which commenced in the early 1960s, goes like this: okay...problematic...grim... not so grim...average...getting better...wow!...amazing...conned. Each impression is around seven itchy years apart, having started with my dad's 123GT 'Amazon' in 1964. While I have never been in any doubt about Volvo's inherent safety ethos and I have both owned and run several Volvo models, it is really only the upturn since the start of the New Millennium that gave me a great slug of confidence in its products. However, ignoring the Chinese ownership is impossible and I worry that its superficial glamour is less than veneer thin. From having grown into a fan and appreciative of its Polestar diversion, I now feel thoroughly disappointed by it and would not give one house room.

In what Forza is calling “Vintage Week” of their car dump for the upcoming Forza Motorsport 7 we are blessed with some real gems. Not to say that the prior patch of over a hundred cars was to be scoffed at, but this current list of 60 is much more in our wheelhouse. Die Forza Fans unter euch kennen die Prozedur seitens Turn 10 sicher. Wie jedes Jahr werden vor Release des nächsten Serienteils nach und nach die Fahrzeuge bekannt gegeben, die euch auf den virtuellen Rennpisten zur Verfügung stehen. Auch bei Forza Motorsport 7 hat sich an der Machart nichts geändert und so werden mit „The Forza Garage“ wöchentlich weitere Fahrzeuge vorgestellt.
