“Get in the swing, go Swept-wing!” read the ads, which were filled with all sorts of jet-age allusions about supersonic jets and speed. All of Chrysler’s “Forward Look” cars for 1957 were radically new, featuring long, clean lines and soaring fins courtesy of Virgil Exner and his acolytes. They redefinited the proportions of full-sized cars for years and that fall buyers came to see them by the hundreds as they arrived in the showroom. Big V8s and torsion bar suspensions made them better to drive than the competition too. Unsurprisingly, all that styled equated to a 19.5% share of the American car market for 1957. It was perhaps too good to be true. - Though he would later be tainted by scandal, Chrysler President “Tex” Colbert had dramatically tried to right Chrysler’s ailing ship, let down over the years by his predecessor K.T. Keller’s autocratic management style. 1957 was the culmination of several years of hard work to leapfrog the competition - which Chrysler handily did. But it had rushed production of the ‘57s. Rushed to the extent that in the middle of the year production lines had to be stopped to rework certain things - like leaks from the front and rear windows that let water into the cabin or trunk. The ‘57s were plagued by rust and quality issues, alienating many of the new buyers brought in by the jet-age style. Then in 1958 a recession saw a 30% slide in new car sales industry-wide. By 1959, GM would have cars to match Chrysler’s ‘57 style, so updates were the order of the day. - Probably the most dramatic of these were the ‘59 Dodges, which got a new front end with distinctive “eyebrows” and even more chrome detail. They were marginally larger although the platform wasn’t changed - just extended a little with new chrome pieces. In contrast, Plymouths got a very heavy makeover for 1959, possibly consuming much of the budget for the ‘59s. A mid-priced car, Dodge sales had slid by more than 50% in 1958, but rebounded somewhat in 1959 to nearly 152,000 units, of which about 1 in 7 were Wagons. Running line changes had greatly improved quality, but by the fall Chrysler was getting ready for another big change - the space-age Unibody 1960 cars. 1957 Dodge Custom royal - $15,995.00
1957 Dodge Custom Royal, Swept Wing, Ultra Rare! Here is one extremely rare car. This is a 1957 Dodge Custom Royal Swept Wing. It was the top of the line trim package in 57. The car was bought brand new 63 years ago in New Braunfels Texas at BECKER Chrysler Plymouth. The car is extremely original and is a rare pink or salmon over cream two-tone. Very neat looking. This car has air conditioning. The car is in amazing unrestored condition and has spent most of its life indoors. We went and rebuilt the factory four-barrel carburetor, got rid of the old fuel. Installed new ignition wires, cap, points, rotor and new belts. The car runs silky smooth. It has a 325 Cross-Over V8 with push button transmission. The car came with factory air conditioning, which for 1957 was rare too! The body is very nice. The interior is also in good shape. Its unlikely you will EVER see another one.
