Blankpaper | 2016: A Year in Review | My Video Library
This video focuses on the content I created for Blankpaper in 2016, but there was an inciting force behind the passion that fueled all of that content and it’s a story I’d like to share with you guys.
2016 was a milestone year for me. I experienced so much. And if I'm at liberty to be a little dramatic for a moment, I would say that I even went through a few hardships. There was one major event, however, that really propelled my year.
Have any of you ever seen those wordsearch posts on Tumblr or Facebook which claim that your new year will be defined by the first three words you see? Well, I don’t consider myself superstitious, but for some reason in the winter of 2015, I decided to play along for fun. However, the fun was quickly over when the first word I spotted was “death.” I don’t even remember the other two words, and I probably would have easily forgotten the first if it weren’t for what happened on January 2, 2016.
I woke up in the middle of the night with a bad case of cramps. I distinctly remember locking myself in the bathroom and sitting on the floor with a heating pad. It wasn’t long after, that I heard a knock on the door. It was my dad. But he looked different. I saw something in his eyes that I hadn’t seen before. He was shook. Not in the comedic or hyperbolic sense of the word, but genuinely. He hadn’t yet spoken a word, and I was already frozen in place. He told me that “Auntie” had died, the affectionate term we used to refer to my great aunt, my late paternal grandmother’s only living sister. My parents had been assisting in the care of her and my great uncle. Her health had deteriorated some time ago. It was clear her memory was fading. But to think she had actually passed on, to see my dad so affected.
I heard my mother asking questions from the room. “Have you packed this?” “Have you called so-and-so?” “C’mon bae, let’s get this sorted.” She had taken charge. A strange flip of events. My mother who was normally the more worried, emotionally driven person, was suddenly taking the lead amidst tragedy. My calm, always rational and collected father seemed heartbroken, and in moments fragile.
I was instructed to keep watch over my five younger siblings and to let them know what was going on when they woke up, why mom and dad were gone.
I don’t handle death well. I have never had to experience and overcome the death of a loved one (I was too young to be affected when my paternal grandparents passed). The idea of death however has haunted me and I do my best to avoid the topic altogether. But on January 2nd 2016, I was suddenly confronted with it and so close to home. I cried uncontrollably at the funeral, seeing my great uncle look so left behind, watching my father cry as he consoled him. Death is so frightening, so unbiased. I soon remembered the predictions of that silly wordsearch.
That experience gave me a newfound appreciation for life, realizing that every day is an opportunity and all lives eventually come to an end. Time is too precious to waste, too precious to spend doing things just to please people, to waste away not making a difference in this world. We get one chance to get this life right. This is a post I wrote less than 2 weeks after the funeral, which was unexpectedly a requested feature on WeAreTheAnd: Not a Second Early
That experience undoubtedly influenced my drive and passion for Blankpaper, my determination to live the life of my dreams instead of only dreaming all the time, taking proactive steps towards what I wanted, towards my God-given purpose. Every. Single. Day.
We all have to. Let 2017 be the year you find and pursue your purpose!
Love & Peace ☯ Zoë Imani

We lost many famous figures in 2016.  It seemed like every time we turned on the news or looked at Facebook we lost someone else.  Some of the people on this list are more well known than others but everyone on this list contributed something significant to the world. They are iconic actors, musicians, sports figures, scientists & political figures, all of whom will be greatly missed.  RIP.
