2017 JJBA Liveblog Index (Draft)
Not getting as much writing done as I planned, so I’m gonna knock out this index to the JoJo liveblogging I did in 2017.    Now you can relive that carefree year, without all the salty anons trying to tell me how to read comic books on my computer.
Part 1: Phantom Blood
Part 2: Battle Tendency
Part 3: Stardust Crusaders
Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable
Part 5: Vento Aureo
Part 6: Stone Ocean
Part 7: Steel Ball Run
Part 8 JoJoLion (ongoing)
Part 5 Again: Vento Aureo Reread 2018
Some of these need some work.   As far as I can tell, Parts 1-6 are complete, but I have some posts from Parts 7 and 8 that have been flagged as adult content, or they just need to be tagged properly.   But this is where they’ll all end up.
As before, my goal is to slap this up on a permanent page on my blog, but for now this is just here so I have the links ready to go.
One of these days I plan on re-liveblogging the manga format of one of the parts I watched in anime form, but that’s probably a long ways off.    But if I do it, I’ll try to make it easy to find.

“Pfft.  40,000?  That’s not a prime number at all.”
“That’s not my point--”
“You can divide it by 5 four times and you can divide it by 2 six times.”
“Enrico, I’m talking about the timeless appeal of classical art--”
“Now 40,009, that’s a prime number.”
“I think I want separate beds.”

PUT BACK.
They tricked the bullshit Stand into creating a superhero who nullifies bullshit Stands.
Why does Rohan get an OAV but Put Back doesn’t get anything?
Put Back is the greatest thing ever.
I love you, Put Back.

I guess even the corniest pickup lines might be fresh again after a hundred years...

“All right, Mr. Kujo, if you’ll just sit over there behind your wife, I’ll take the picture... no, sit down, Mr.  Kujo.  Don’t just lean over the chair and put your elbow on the back of it.”
“This is fine.   Just take the picture.”
“Honey, we talked about this...  This is a family photo.  I’m sending copies of this to my parents.”
“That’s exactly why I’m posing like this.  I need to look my best.”
“Would you at least take your hat off?”
“No.”
“Jotaro...”
“I can wear the hat whenever I want, with anything I want pinned to it.  At any time.   Including now.”
“We’re indoors...”
“Yare yare.   You were the one who suggested we write each other’s wedding vows.”
“Fine.   Just take the picture.”
“Um... are you sure, Mrs. Kujo?  Because there’s no refunds.”
“It’s fine.   I don’t care.   It’s fine.”

I get the sense that Annasui expects to die in this final battle.  Even if they win, he’s pledged himself to defend Jolyne at all costs, so it doesn’t seem likely that he can protect her and survive to see this thing through.
All he wants now is some sort of validation of his feelings, and I guess he’ll take it from Jolyne’s dad if he can’t get it from anywhere else.  And you know, in a desperate situation like this, allies sometimes humor each other because they know morale is all they have left--
Oh, right.  Jotaro doesn’t do that.  Never mind.

This really shook me when I finished reading it.   I had to call my mom just so I could stop thinking about it for a while, and then I took a nap.  Then I went to the grocery and bought an apple pie because I saw a post on my dashboard about apple pie and I thought it would help.  It still bothers me.
But like, in a good way?  Maybe?  I kind of appreciate a profound, complex ending.  Emporio’s saved the world and avenged his friends, but he’s the only one who knows what happened, and from his perspective, none of this is exactly real.  The people he meets in this scene are clearly alt-universe versions of his friends, but they don’t know him, or remember anything that happened just a short time ago (from Emporio’s perspective).  This kid’s gotta be what?  Ten?   Eleven at most.  I’m surprised he’s taking it as well as he is.
I don’t know if Irene and the others are “”“really””” the same people from the original reality or not.  It’s probably meant to be ambiguous, and it really doesn’t matter, since the Jolyne we knew is gone either way.
But maybe this is better for everyone involved.  One of the angles that interested me was the legal status of the main cast.  Jolyne still had a twenty-year sentence to serve, and it would be next-to-impossible to prove she was framed.  Jotaro tried to help her escape, and there would be consequences for that.  They could all live as fugitives like Lisa Lisa way back in Part 2, but I had a hard time seeing that work.
This way, for better or worse, the slate is wiped clean.  None of these characters is in trouble with the law.  None of them have Stands, or bitter enemies, or obligations to save the world.  Annakiss doesn’t have any murders on his conscience, and Irene seems to like him.  Irene’s father seems to have a good relationship with his daughter.   Hermes’ sister is still alive, based on the dialogue in this scene.  Weather Report is okay, too, as they pick him up on the next to last page.  Everyone seems to be better off this way.  Everyone seems to have what they want.  They’re together, and that’s that.
I suppose this whole mess was Dio’s posthumous revenge for his downfall in Part 3.  He couldn’t rule the world so he left the instructions for one of his followers to remake it.  The outcome of that seems to be a draw.  Dio’s influence has finally been stamped out, but so are all the memories of the Joestars and their heroism.
But not really.  Dio’s the loser here, because he had all these lofty ambitions to remake the world in his image, and they’ve amounted to nothing.  All the Joestars ever really wanted to do was the right thing, like giving a distraught little boy a sweater and a ride to the next town.
